Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Well the treadmill didn't last long , well in its original glory :)
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7mfkcdw2.jpg Hey Mario, if I got leftovers I'll send um to ya,, I was thinking of cutting at least 3 strips, maybe 4. I only need two. Couldn't help it guys, the shop guys were taking a water break when I walked into the kitchen from slaving on parts in the shop!! http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pss6ojdtqm.jpg Started work on the bucket instead of hydraulic hard lines. This is the only saw I have. It's great for wood but I really hope I don't smoke it cutting metal. The main body of bucket is 22guage and the reinforcing it 16. That's really pushing this little saw. http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psreif98qw.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psuzcyz99q.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psxfjmncsv.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pszy3bjgy0.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psinaulseg.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psuwqewtgc.jpg I had this zinc plated key stock that I thought would be great for making teeth,,,,, figured once I'm done milling it I'll blast off the zinc before brazing. Boy, with the width of the slot and the key stock it's about all my little mill can do with the slitting saw. Figured the slit would be the hardest operation for work holding so it was first. http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psobpxbyqr.jpg |
Re: Great Dane excavating co.
I'm still looking for the icon for drooling! Ok, next best thing....:jaw:
That belt looks REAL good ! And so does everything your doing to the hoe! Your true to your word Ralph. I remember when you first joined the forum and said the 4200 was a starting point. :D I hope you been taking measurements and notes:eek:. Maybe get into the habit of making 2 of everything ;) |
Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Oh yeah.... And I think you "fixed" that treadmill just fine! ;)
|
Re: Great Dane excavating co.
You have the most interesting household trucks animals huge to small and everyone gets along so I don't see what adding pieces of a treadmill to the collection would hurt . My wife and I both enjoy your critter pics and vids ,they always put a smile on our face . Thanks Mike

Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Ok I started working n the hard lines,,, what a pita!!! Hats off to you guys that make this stuff look simple!!!!!
The bent ones on right were replaced as a small crimp is in the bend. I have only wasted about 12-14" so far :(. I really need some help, someone that will hold parts in place while heating, and not mind the 600 degree temp on fingers. (Wife was being a skirt!) http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pssa6p481o.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pshvq4pi7b.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psd7empuic.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psxmcec5j9.jpg And just a double check on clearances. http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psnx31xe9f.jpg And I must say sometimes I actually surprise/impress myself!! They actually look good and line up!! http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pscndtne1o.jpg Next time I do cylinders I will braze ends first, use silver solder on next parts and use 40/60 on last parts. I kept getting worried about de soldering pieces and having solder leak into polished cylinders. The solder job isn't the best aesthetically but functions. I pressure checked all areas. Got a bit of bloody lip by hooking air compressor up to lift cylinder and having my face directly above when I added a bit too much and too fast amount of air!!! Oops. Guess that's better than spraying brake cleaner into one hose that curves directly back :(. (Yea, did that too, and took off the glasses right before!!). I do have a nick name of r.w., --turns into r dub, which turns into r dumb!! But all n all I got the hard part done!!! Now just have to wait on some longer sections of tube, maybe Tuesday. |
Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Never mind all this beautiful, precision metal work your sharing with us....how's the treadmill project coming along?;)
|
Re: Great Dane excavating co.
I've seen a lot of live steam loco builders amazing stuff but I think this is more amazing . Are u using plans or cut and fit or the real one in the backyard ! Mario I bet the tread mill has already been rebuilt into a conveyor ! Mike

Re: Great Dane excavating co.
I often wish I had someone with silicon fingers to help me hold small pieces while welding. It seems no matter how many tools I have for clamping there is always a situation where none of them fit. Great job on the cylinders. This will be the nicest looking China hoe out there when you are finished.

Re: Great Dane excavating co.
I have a pair of welding gloves real handy when I do brass work, I don't think I have many finger prints left for burning the tips off:o
I was about to say something about the lack of furry employee photos lately, and you came through, still not as many as we'd like to see:cop: The 4200 is looking real good, the Rams and piping are insane! Oh yeah and feed the Mario animal some conveyor food before he passes out.:lol::D |

I did some modification to the cab. Trying to make it more 1:14 scale. I removed 1 1/4" off the bottom. Will have to replace one hinge location and trim the plastic yet. The one thing I don't have in the shop is a decent bandsaw, everything I've done so far has been hacksaw and cleaning up.

Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Some of the process to make those little ends for the hard lines. Just a lot of processes for a bunch of these little pieces.
Facing cut http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psfp8wljab.jpg Center drilling http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7mqblwmr.jpg 5/32 slightly under hole http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8wjk5iqy.jpg Threading hole .25 deep http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pspuhitn8n.jpg Tapping for m5 thread http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pst7bqvmle.jpg Beveled end http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psh4jxrfhx.jpg Slightly over 5/32 for solder .10 deep http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psaqqyae8r.jpg Had to make 14 if um. These little buggers were time consuming !!! |

I may print them depending on how much force is added to lines from movement. |
Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Cooper, just a sugestion, I use a botch Jiggsaw with metal blade to cut my curvey stuff I have cut up to 1/4 inch steel with it. This of course is a cheap but effective solution to cutting about anything. This jigsaw is not your normal jigsaw, because it has kind of a circular reciprocating motion.

Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Great job on the lines and fittings! Very time consuming making all the fiddly parts isn't it. Sometime you wonder if it's worth it, but when people ask you can still say I made those myself!! I see the supervisor is sound asleep in the chair as usual! It's hard to get good help these days isn't it! Good job they work for peanuts and kibble.

Re: Great Dane excavating co.
That's what I was looking for early this morning in barn when I noticed how light it was in the back. Looked at a rock pile and realized the wall had collapsed!! Now have a 6' by 2' hole in the foundation wall!! It's the back side of the earthen ramp leading to second floor from outside. And after looking around a bit the rest of wall about 40' looks "ok" . Some other exterior work high up on boards needes attention. I think I may take a drive over to the Amish farm and get them to finally do some much needed repairs. Have an old silo about 60' high, cement block style that silage has eaten away at about 35-40% of foundation blocks. That's been a big concern of mine for a while. Dad just thinks it's fine and doesn't need anything :).
So I forgot to pick up what I was after, I have a few old low voltage light power supplys. I was thinking they output 12 volts and I may use them as a landline power distrubutation house for the future screening plant and conveyor (that I plan on making )!!! So Mario, the cats out of bag and I forgot to pick them up. That's about the only progress I have in the conveyor job. Winter time is supposta be my slow time, I've been working more now than ever!!! Well if you can call this work :) |

Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Was trying to figure out how to add some pounds (fairly easily) instead of making a new bottom plate , as joe suggested, I am trying to locate heavy parts, pump, batteries, ect,, towards back. I did decide to add a 1/2" piece of alum stock to the counterweight. And I also relocated it back a bit more , just a touch past 1/2". It also gives more scale 12'4" swing of the 1:1 cat 349.
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pschfengcv.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psrwhoxdp5.jpg I didn't strip paint off these side pieces yet, but will. Milled the sides flush and just filed the radius by hand. http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psayf5bm9v.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psxjmkshmm.jpg |

Re: Great Dane excavating co.
You have given me some ideas as well:D The rebuild looks awesome,I never thought about cutting the bottom of the cab off instead I made a whole cab out of styrene and made the engine house out of styrene as well:(. I like your cylinders as well the stock ones are not much to desire. Might would like a set built If you are interested;)

Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Let's see how the clearances on the orings work and then I may be able to possibly make a set for you wood hog. I have to make one of the pistons a bit longer on the bucket cylinder. It hits the braces when bucket curled all the way. Longer piston will limit how much the bucket can curl. Would be simplest mod verses making new cylinder.
This is the face of frustration!!!!!!! http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pscjwun5f8.jpg The following pics will show why,, http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pstpzdmkjb.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psfqdqr04y.jpg Had this crazy idea of making a hydraulic tank and hiding it in the front compartment. Good idea but I still am not all there with brazing/ soldering thin stuff!!! A few mishaps, cussing, melting, bending,,,,ect!!! http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psocqzlzjx.jpg Pressure tested, had two leaks that were fixed. Tested with about 20psi, blew it up once and realized it's just a tank and didn't need to be pressure filled. At least not enough to split the seams, http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psveczuslz.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5z2vswr5.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7ne43ovt.jpg Always wanted to have some sight glass or sight tube so I could know at a glance how much fluid. And the suction and return lines were made to hopefully enable running on incline and allowing air to bubble to top before suction. Also vent has a small cavity towards top so when machine is less than level fluid should stay and air escape. Yes hopefully I will be incline surfing and placing the ex in some rather unfavorable positions, working or loading. And had some time to get a better idea of engine compartment /crow, hood whatever it's called. It looks a bit too tall, some more tinkering,,,, http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...pswlfwgtyw.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psxlvqp9v1.jpg |
Re: Great Dane excavating co.
That's looking great! I use the same type of "breather" on my tanks and it works well. I have them right on the top of the tank with no extension and there aren't any leaks. I'm sure with the pipe on there that will work until you're upside down.lol I went to the trouble of adding baffles and screens inside the tank on my Volvo. I don't believe any of it was necessary but I did it anyway because that what "real" tanks have. I also added a clear hose like you to see the oil level. My skidder doesn't have one and I have to remove the cap to see the oil height...It sucks! I like the way you have the tank tucked up front like that. Will you be able to increase the battery volume now or does it just allow for less clutter? How long does it take to print those size pieces with you printer? They look really good!
|
Re: Great Dane excavating co.
The print was done in four separate prints. The print bed is like 5x5". I'll just glue them together, I just use regular abs/PVC hardware store glue instead of mixing up acetone and strips,, it's all the same for me. The one with the stack was like 3 1/2 hours. The others were 2-1/2 to 3 hours. I'm planing on installing a fan inside them. But having it connected with touch terminals so no wires when removing / replacing batteries.
Hopefully the location of tank works out. I don't have all the pieces for her yet. Ok well I might as well say it, I know Christmas time is upon us and I thought about getting my wife some real expensive presents,,,,, ya know I think we all have herd this before,,,," that's ok, it's the thought that counts". Right? Well I'm going to put that to the test as I decided to use her present funds to purchase premacon pump and valves, and a couple other nic knacks for the excavator. So we shall see if that saying " it's the thought that counts" as I "thought" about using those funds on her, but didn't. :). As some of you have gathered I don't always make the right decision, but do rectify the situation to a more favorable one (at a later date). Ya know that redneck engineering and the redneck love:). We shall see or should I say to be continued,,,,,,,,,,,,, Oh and I should have room to stack two 5amp 3s batteries in back to add more weight and more weight towards back. I do want to have things looking square and neat so more room is always better!!! |
Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Your printed hood, is it mostly hollow or a solid block that you'll mill your fans into?
Nice work on your hyd tank. That is a job that I will tackle this wkend, but with 1/16th steel strip b/c I don't have ready access to any brass. Your wife doesn't know you post on this forum? risky putting "the thought is what counts" in print! :o :D |
Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Just making a spacer for the piston rod would be easier than making a piston over again. That way you can adjust the length of the spacer to give you the stroke you want. Did that on full sized ones before with no problems.

Re: Great Dane excavating co.
Hey Cooper, have you seen "heat paste" for soldering? http://muggyweld.com/all-products/coolblue Might help with soldering small stuff together.
Cheers, Neil |
Re: Great Dane excavating co.
That company makes a lot of stuff I need to get!! Thanks, doodlebug!!
Steamer, I'm most likely going to make new pistons. I'm using aluminum for them and they are pretty easy/simple to make. Plus I have one that is sized wrong on diameter, forget which one but I know I have to remake at least one. The stick cylinder could use a touch longer piston as well. Fully retracted it almost contacts the boom. Have to get with the R&D department Monday :). |

Excited and curious the plaintiff quickly and with great excitement sat down and started unwrapping what seamed to be a well thought of present for a deservingly loving wife as she was/is. But much to my surprise as the plaintiff opened the present and reviled a whole carton of toilet paper was when I the defendant began the actions of the accuser. Now after the initial confrontation had subsided between plaintiff and defendant (myself) I still could not think of a more "personal" present than toilet paper!! I even got the most fluffy kind I could find!! Now that's the irony of being a good listener and not thinking of yourself!!! |

Hey reg, here is a great logger dozer!!!
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...ps25faa10c.jpg It's more than a winch but would suit you good in logging country!! The underside of hood. Still have some fitting of fan to do. Probably going to instal magnets to secure it for quick battery access. http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psq2dpfhjq.jpg http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psplahwvex.jpg This is the contact for bucket curl I was talking about. I made the piston for that cylinder almost 1/2" longer. Keeps teeth from scraping underside of stick also. http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psahexbr2f.jpg And added braces to all the long hard lines. http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psrcqqv0jz.jpg |

Hey if the wife doesn't like her Xmas present from premacon I'm not going to send it back or have her exchange it, I'll use it!!! Done that before too!:). (Yea I don't know why she says she loves me ?:) ) anyway, I want the front wheels to be a touch wider stance, like maybe 1/8 or 3/16 wider each side.
