HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane

This is a build of a Hiab 1058 loader crane. It will be mostly made out of steel and brass.
I don't have any truck to put it just yet

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane

As this is a quite large crane, the cylinders are big. Both main cylinders have 26 mm pistons and the piston rod is 18 mm.

Actually not a bad idea :)
I saw not so long ago one older Volvo ATD with loader crane and small bed in a power line construction site.

titandigs (Paul) daily driver looks like your top photo, though his trk may be a Volvo, he pulls 2-3-4 trls at a time hauling containers & cargo... you could make an 8x8 to haul all your gear to the site.

Now this looks like a very cool project ! Will be interested to see the end product :)

I had to make a custom wrench for the caps :)

Nice work Hemi ! :)
You make me want to try milling some of those steel sheet on my cnc router. What’s your feeds and speeds for a base guide line ?

For the contours I'm running at 300mm/min, and fairly small cuts, around 0,3-0,4mm. The main problem is heat generation, I only have a mist coolant on my machine, so it's not as effective as proper flood coolant.

Here's a few pictures of assembled crane :)
Next I should probably start making the telescopic arm.

Thank you Hemi !

There any reason why you have choose steel over aluminum ?
I'm about to buy a Chinese knock off lampert welding machine and milling aluminum is way more easier on my cnc router... I'm scare the welding of aluminum is going to be bad. Seen some picture of peoples successfully weld with aluminum with those kind of machine. (Picture here) But maybe you already try and was not happy with it ?

Otherwise nice work again :)

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane

I saw on another forum that somebody used a teflon tape between the telescoping sections for lower friction when telescoping the sections.
I think it was one of the German forums.

Main reason I choose steel was just that welding. I have tried to weld aluminum, but I wasn't pleased with the results. But it could be just me not knowing what I was doing:(

Thanks for the advice. Do you have any idea what kind of teflon tape it was, the only one I know is for sealing pipes, but that might not be the correct one.

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane

That's looking incredibly wicked, can't wait to see this working!

I'd guess the Teflon tape used on sliding parts like that would be something like a Nitto Permacel p-421. It's a silicone adhesive backed smooth sheet of PTFE 5Mil thick. Most of what i've messed with is 1" wide.

-- edit
Ptfe = PolyTetraFluoroEthylene = Teflon is the brand name.
Let me know if you can't track any down...

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane

I think I used the wrong word. I was using google translate to read the forum. But yes it was something with an adhesive side and a slippery/low friction side.

https://www.modelltruck.net/showthre...PK100002/page3

self-adhesive PTFE film. Post number 78 is where I see it first mentioned.

Re: HIAB X-HIPRO 1058 loader crane

PTFE is the actual name of the material used in Teflon. Teflon is just a brand name that stuck.

Excellent work Hemi. It's coming out prefect!

I used electrical shrink tube with success, but this is relatively thick and so requires to be considered at the design step...

I admire your craftsmanship! If I were to try & scratch build a crane, like you've done I fear it wouldn't function very well.

That could very well happen to this one too

I mostly worried about the extension cylinders (6 pcs) placement and the routing of their hoses.
