Scratch building a folding disc
I finally got a enough materials collected to start my latest build- a folding disc. If this is anything like the New Holland conversion i did it should take about 2 years too complete. First i started out with 3/16" x 3/4" aluminum strips to build the uprights that hold the row of disc. In the drill press had to make 16 pieces.
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...20disc/001.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...20disc/003.jpg Next i pressed a bearing into cause i want this disc to last a long time. http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...20disc/004.jpg Next I took some 1 1/4" fenders and tapped the with 1/4 x 20 tap. http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...%20disc/4a.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...20disc/005.jpg Next threaded them on some 1/4" x 20 rod sharpened the edge on my bench ginder. http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...20disc/006.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...20disc/007.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...20disc/008.jpg stock washer vs sharpened one http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...20disc/013.jpg Ok i have 80 of these washers to due today. So tomorrow I'll post picture of a assembled row of disc. Time to get back to the ginder. |
Re: Scratch building a folding disc
Looking good so far, keep the pics coming. Its a shame you can't press a convex into the washers.

Re: Scratch building a folding disc
Most of the parts for this build is from Lowe's so far. Next i use 1/4" x 20 threaded rod and screw of the fender washers. I applied some JB weld to the threads first to insure the disc will not move.

Re: Scratch building a folding disc
Got the rear section done this weekend and built 2 of the 4 outriggers. Should have all the outriggers done next weekend and will start on the framework next.

Re: Scratch building a folding disc
So how many scale feet is this, 32'?
|
Re: Scratch building a folding disc
At 1/16 scale it comes too 32' according to my scale calculator Joe. Good guess by the way.

Re: Scratch building a folding disc
Got the main frame started and all 4 outriggers are ready. Just waiting on the pivot material to show up so i can build the framework on the outriggers.

This is look great Hauler... did you grind all the disks by hand, just curious if all the angles are the same?

Re: Scratch building a folding disc
gday hauler my name is Richard i am from melbourne your build looks great i was born in bairnsdale which is in the country and there is heaps of these in use there. looks like you have had it out for a test run how did it go?

Re: Scratch building a folding disc
That looks great Jeremy. You are running a bit ahead of schedule though, aren't you? Great progress. Are any of your disk frame's joint soldered or brazed? I see some joints bolted together, but the main frame looks like it's soldered, brazed, or welded.

Re: Scratch building a folding disc
Love the heavy look of the disk. Looks very well built. You might want to try and peen those washers for a conical shape like the real thing, just a suggestion.

Re: Scratch building a folding disc
Did this ever get finished? Awesome work.
|
Re: Scratch building a folding disc
Really awesome work. The build quality is real nice.
|
Re: Scratch building a folding disc
How did this turn out?
Q - why did you choose to shy away from dishing the disc parts. |
Re: Scratch building a folding disc
We could still use some video of this in the field. It looks to me like it was complete enough for action, maybe the folding component is where it stalled? Still looks very nice.

Re: Scratch building a folding disc
looks like the great start for the build . a nice servo for the wheels to raise and lower them would work great
