my oil field truck
A few photos of the work in progress,
It started off here http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...d2/shortie.jpg and sorta grew into this http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...ysdad2/006.jpg and gained a push frame or front end guard, not quite sure what you guys call them, http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...dad2/005-1.jpg and this is where we are now http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...ysdad2/014.jpg as you can see, there is a long way to go! |
Re: my oil field truck

This one load's slow, be patient. http://www.emisales.net/trucks-videos.html Cheer's, Neil. |
Re: my oil field truck
Another great video , thanks for the link.
A few more photos of work in progress. http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...dad2/003-2.jpg http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...dad2/002-2.jpg http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...dad2/001-2.jpg |
Re: my oil field truck
looks great, are you basing it off a 1:1? my only observation is that the rear axles seem too close to the rear of the truck, at least based on the flat decks I see around here, looks great none the less!
|
Re: my oil field truck
Thanks for the observation, its not based on any particular real one.
I've only seen photos of them and the rear wheels seem very close to the end of the chassis, maybe I've over done it a bit! We don't get any 1:1 versions over here to measure. The bed could be extended in the fullness of time. Going to give it a work out on Sunday, maybe a lot more will need changing after that! |

It is looking great glad to see you get picks up on the board I think you are hitting the mark perfectly. Civic on these oil field boom truck the rear axles are right at the rear so that way when they use the boom it does not pick the front off the ground so easy it gives them more lifting power.. |
Re: my oil field truck
Man that truck sure did grow!!! What did you feed her, steroids???
Anyhoo, the truck look's great, and keep the pic's coming. Big John |
Re: my oil field truck
Thanks for the positives, plenty of steroids.
Heres one of it using the steroids http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...sdad2/0024.jpg The containers are two Bruder ones fastened together and put on a skid like those on CAMEX videos Great fun! got to make gin poles work next. |
Re: my oil field truck
looks good, have you got any video of it pulling the container onto the truck
|
Re: my oil field truck
Ah that makes sense about the axle placement, i hadn't considered that.
|
Re: my oil field truck
No Brel, no video as yet but expect Tamiya Monkey will take some at Clumber Park on Sunday. Not too bad a ride out from Staffordshire if you get bored!
I'm taking it to try out and grab the "longest turning circle" award! |
Re: my oil field truck
Way to go! I like it.
Cheer's, Neil. |
Re: my oil field truck
are you going to put in a flip over fifth wheel and gin poles on the bed ?
i like the look of this oil field truck |
Re: my oil field truck
Yes to the gin poles, if you look very carefully you can see them layed alongside the outer planks, yet to drill them for the pulley though.
The 5th wheel slots into the bed for now above the pivot for the rear bogie. Truckmaker has given me an idea for a king pin rising up out of the bed, something to think about! |
Re: my oil field truck

the pop up pin will be good, easy to do with a little servo now how will the poles be lifted lol i guess i watched that video to many times lol but i did like the step /chain locker on the rig-up bed, again easy to do with a tiny servo , but sitting here at the computer it is all easy ROFL |
Re: my oil field truck
Nice container! Is there any weight to it? I can't wait to see a video of it hooked up to something that will lift the steer axle off the ground while it picks it up.
|
Re: my oil field truck
Very cool!!
|
Re: my oil field truck
Can you do a three point turn with that, :) That a nice setup.
|
Re: my oil field truck
well done job on the bed/pole truck build...I used flat fenders and oil field bumpers on the rigs I built...again great paint job and work
|
Re: my oil field truck
Smart racer,
Flat top fenders do look mean, any photos of your truck? This link should take you to some youtube video of loading a container, the voice over is not me , I was too busy concentrating on the loading process! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK-id...yer_detailpage |
Re: my oil field truck
Very cool video...I like it.;):)

Re: my oil field truck
A couple of photos showing modifications to Tamiya flat bed trailer so I can load containers on to it by using winch on the truck.

Re: my oil field truck
Great truck, great vid, and I like the trailer idea as well.... you went out of the park with this one.. oil field trucks are some of the best youtube vids to watch and yours it right there with the real ones.....
|
Re: my oil field truck
Nice progress! You are gonna have one heck of a turning radius with that thing! :D
|
Re: my oil field truck
Awesome build ,enjoyed the vid ,the rolling tailboard works great, look forward to seeing it with the gin poles operating :D
|
Re: my oil field truck
T" don't take this the wrong way but! every oil field truck I ever saw had 2 operating front drive axles.
Reason being is the end loaded and dumped this from the back, so 1 the needed the weight up front. 2 once they were load they needed to distributed the weight as best as they could. It's a great truck but for ac curacies sake you need a second drive axle just under the pillar and rear head ache board |
Re: my oil field truck
gregg, I understand where you are coming from but there are a lot about with only one front drive axle, if I knew how to do it I would paste a pdf from CAMEX showing the one I loosely based mine on.

and triple rear axles and tag axles lol and i do believe that there are a bunch more that i have never seen. Most of the bed company are started because a hand gets tired of working with pieces of trash truck and beds that they are working with makes a new kind that works better and faster ,easier that the company buys and then orders two or three more and a new bed company is started |

Re: my oil field truck
Thanks for those links, most of which I had not seen before.
Can't get mine to lift the front end like the one in the first video though. The PDF I could not paste in was this one http://www.camex.ca/images/stories/r...andem_axle.pdf When I first started looking round before building the model, I was amazed at how many varieties there were, took me a while to decide but the length of a tandem steer, tandem brive in 1:14 scale helped me to decide on the single steer , tandem drive version with a 28 foot bed. It nicely fits into the back of my car. Thanks again! |
Re: my oil field truck
They definately come in all sizes, from Class 6 single rear end on up to off road only.
I looked at a new Kenworth C-500 last, year that was 10 ft wide, 410 inch wheel base tandem-tandem, 25 inch off road tire's. I could park my Mack on the bed and walk around it! It went to Oklahoma after the Conexpo/Conag show. Only $750,000.00. Cheer's, Neil. |
Re: my oil field truck
Bet those 25 inch tyres looked mean!
Here is a photo of the winch, it uses a motor with a 100:1 gearbox to directly drive the drum http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...sdad2/0054.jpg Here is a photo of testing out the gin poles, http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...sdad2/0094.jpg before I make a pair of manually operated winches to raise and lower the poles. I also learnt why there is a pulley at the back end of the bed, gets a bit exciting without it! Guess if you forget to use it on a real truck , it gets a bit crazy and very expensive. |
Re: my oil field truck
Photo taken by a friend last weekend, takes a bit of careful positioning to get container onto trailer but hopefully with practice all will be well.

Re: my oil field truck
Nice Micheal, you need a tractor under that trailer so you can try and hit a moving target with the container!:p:p:p:D

Re: my oil field truck
Great looking truck! Now that you have done a single front axle bed truck though, I really think you need to do a twin steer (or if you prefer, tandem/tandem) bed truck. I live in BC so never see such trucks locally but I was in Alberta (in a town where the oil patch is big industry) for work last week and saw plenty of big bed trucks driving around town. After that, you should really build a twin steer picker. Camex is such a great site for inspiration.

Re: my oil field truck
This truck is awesome. I don't spend much time in thus section but every time I look at this thread I have to look at this build! I'm building a A.W.D king hauler and I hope it turns out half as good as your truck did
|
Re: my oil field truck
thats a really cool setup u got, nice interesting truck.

Re: my oil field truck
Thanks for the interest and positive comments.
Here is a photo taken a short while ago at a local (to me anyway!) truck meeting, http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...ysdad2/018.jpg |
