Steamer
Well after a lot of prodding from Greg and Lou I guess this is the start of my thread. This weekend the three of us went in with the Campbell River model railway club for their annual train show. Albert and Jordy from the Port came over and it was a fun time with about 850 people threw the doors.
The first video is for Scott as it's his #1 Cat getting her feet dirty in the coal pile. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/.../th_CR2002.jpg Next vid is mister smoothy Greg loading my G scale train for delivery http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/.../th_CR2008.jpg I have more pictures but we'll see how this works out. Re: Steamer
Steamer
Glad to see you start a thread. I had a great time at the show. Thanks Albert for letting me run the Skid Steer. Now I have to scrub all the coal dust off of it before I return it:D TheMachinist |
Re: Steamer
lol invading them trains were ya?

Re: Steamer
Greg, Lou and Rob,
Thanks for letting us play on your job site. It was a blast. Can't wait for the next time. Albert |
Re: Steamer
Looks like you had a good time. I would have liked to come out but I had to work. Maybe next time.

nice videos! hitachi operator was so smooth, is he made of silk? :p

Re: Steamer
Well I guess that I should start a truck build and this is my first RC truck. Was a Wall Mart last year and saw this Freight liner dump with pup. Thought that it might be a good truck to model
http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...htliner002.jpg Took it home and put it away and that was it, till I met up with Lou and Greg at a train show in Port Alberni. Seeing the great models that they had, I was hooked. Back in the sixties I worked for the Four Wheel Drive Corporation in Kitchener on the end of the highway truck line. We built one cab over with a longer frame that had a dump body installed buy Frink. That truck always stuck with me, so I decided why not build it from the Globe Liner. The first thing to do was install a longer frame and put on plenty of fuel for the long haul trips. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...WDBuild006.jpg I also ran the cab through the table saw to go from a 108" cab to a 96". http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...Build001-1.jpg Thanks for looking Rob |
Re: Steamer
Nice Rob!
Pretty soon you're going to keep Greg and Lou busy loading your truck. |
Re: Steamer
Rob, I don't know how I missed this thread?:o
Thanks for the videos of the Delta Loader working.:) That is a tiny battery you are using in it Albert. The progress of your Cab over and trailer will be fun to watch. Nice operating Greg, loading into that small train hopper really shows some good skills! The vid of Lou moving that huge log is cool, the log is almost as big as the machine. Looks like you guys had a blast. Having the equipment closer to eye level really makes it more enjoyable. Thanks so much for sharing! |
Re: Steamer
Nice looking truck Rob
I didn't know what a FWD was until I ran into you. Looking forward to loading it up and putting it to work. greg |

I use a 2cell 1300mah lipo pack in it (it is actually the flight pack for my Align 600E heli). Albert |
Re: Steamer
that is a good choice to model! lol

Re: Steamer
Looking forward to seeing the shinny paint job... Pic's Pic's

Re: Steamer
Just for you folks that have never seen an FWD truck, here's a picture.
http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...s_dist_fwd.jpg Work to convert cab is next. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...WDBuild014.jpg Trying to form headlight buckets. At first one piece .060 and in the end laminated two .030 pieces. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...WDBuild015.jpg Made the mistake of using the green stuff. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...WDBuild046.jpg Thanks for looking. Re: Steamer
Wow! Nice styrene work. It looks really good Rob.
|
Re: Steamer
Nice job on the styrene work Rob. Bending the stuff and having it stay there is not easy. Building it up like you did is usually the best way to do it.
Now I am confused, is it going to be a freightliner or a FWD? -Mike |
Re: Steamer
Interesting new look for the globeliner donor, a great start so far Rob.
You'll have to get Greg & Lou to help ya with making a youtube account for future videos cause I just cannot get any of your vids from the railroad show to load. :( |
Re: Steamer
Thanks Scott and Mike for your comments on the styrene. This is a first for me for this type of construction, but it was fun learning curve. Up till now it's been strictly metal. Plastic melts when you burn coal. Mike, sorry for the confusion, but yes it will be a ForWarD Mover all the way. The Freightliner was just for the concept. I was thinking about it, but it would have been an even bigger mod than what I'm doing. Remember this is my first truck.
Joe, don't know what to say, yours is the first that wouldn't work. Anyone else have a problem. I have a U tube acct. but thought it would be easier to just use one place to link everything for the build. Rob |
Re: Steamer
After sanding and filling too many time to count, I gave her a shot of primer.
http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...DWBuild052.jpg The grill was made from a second globe liner grill and the two were sectioned together. I all so attached an extension to the fender flare that runs to the back of the cab. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...DWBuild053.jpg Next up was to add on some of the lights and stacks to get a feel of how it was going. Even tried new wheels. Sorry Steve didn't know you were making them when this was done. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...WDBuild066.jpg Next up was making the screw drive and I didn't think to take pictures until it was painted. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...WDBuild001.jpg http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...Build002-1.jpg Thanks for looking. Rob |
Re: Steamer
Looking real good Rob
Alot of shinny fuel tanks, I hope the excavator bucket stays well clear. No NEWBY hoe operators allowed...lol greg |
Re: Steamer
Looks awesome Rob!!!
|
Re: Steamer
Next up was making a mock up for the box. I thought about aluminum but after checking out styrene I took the easy way.
http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...WDBuild012.jpg Didn't come out to bad, so I went ahead and built one with all the detail. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...Build001-2.jpg http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...Build006-1.jpg Thanks for looking. Rob |
Re: Steamer
that looks real sharp Rob . I like the pic in the background , what road name are they ? looks like reading lines' colors unless my eyes deceive me

Re: Steamer
Xllnt work Rob.
How you gonna fashion a tailgate lock? Ya need one of them. ;) A little tip to improve your traction (especially when empty and tugging your pup) and to lock the tire to the rim without gluing is to add air rifle BB's. |
Re: Steamer
Thanks Steve. The loci in the picture is Canadian National 6400 Northern. Built back in 1936. Started to build one, but sold it when I moved here from Ontario. Would be nice to have now. Always my favorite.

Re: Steamer
I did build a lock for the gate as follows. First made lock arms from some .060 brass. cut two pieces of 1/8" dia. drill rod and silver soldered on the arms. Cut a piece of 1/4" drill rod and drilled and taped 8-32 right the way through. Made up and silver soldered on a brass arm to link up to the servo.
http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...atelock001.jpg Threaded the 1/8" drill rod 10-32 thread and installed it with lock nuts to keep the arm parallel and from turning http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...atelock002.jpg Mounted small servo from Helli to the box hooked up the linkage and it worked. Last photo is the down stop switch for the screw drive. It has a diode bridge on it so it will reverse to go back up. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...atelock007.jpg Thanks for looking Rob |
Re: Steamer
That looks pretty nifty Rob and I like how you made your pintle plate too. Lots of trick ideas already on this trk.
Is that pintle from PMD? |
Re: Steamer
Nice work on the latch mechanism Rob. Looks great.
|
Re: Steamer
Can you draw a diagram of the wiring? sounds interesting
|
Re: Steamer
i like the look of the saw marks on the ends of the plastic
they look like steel after being cut with a plasma cutter and a gas axe nice detail lol http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...atelock001.jpg Threaded the 1/8" drill rod 10-32 thread and installed it with lock nuts to keep the arm parallel and from turning http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...atelock002.jpg Thanks for looking Rob[/QUOTE] |
Re: Steamer
Thanks for all the comments on the build. The pintle is from PMD and I think it's a good product. May have to install a spring to keep the lock closed.. Never thought about the edge looking like a plasma cut but it does. Tried a lot of different methods for cutting styrene and ended up using the band saw with 18 tooth blade. It cut the fastest and left that edge. I'll do up a drawing for the switch and post it later.
Back on the dump box. After it was finished I gave it a coat of Modelmaster Chrome silver and made the overflow boards for some mahogany. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...DumpBox004.jpg In this photo you can see the servo for the tail gate latch. http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...DumpBox009.jpg I also had to shorten up the cab floor. I worked it out and was able to fit in the 12 volt battery for the dump. Two esc's are for truck drive and dump http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...DumpBox008.jpg http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...DumpBox007.jpg Next up will be painting the cab. Thanks for looking Rob |
Re: Steamer
I also did a short vid of the box in action. It was able to lift 25 lbs no problem.

Re: Steamer
Looks great Rob
I really like the speed and the power of the box. Can't wait to see it loaded up. Almost time to start another project.... greg |
Re: Steamer
Well I was able to get the white on for the first coat of paint. not much to see but it getting close to the finish.
http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...tcolour001.jpg Thanks for looking Rob |
Re: Steamer
i can't wait to see how the paint job comes out on the cab. looking good!
|
Re: Steamer
Just thought that I'd put up a couple of teasers till I get all the chrome on her.
http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...DFinish015.jpg http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/...DFinish007.jpg I'll try to get the rest of the pictures up when she's finished. Thanks for looking. Rob |
Re: Steamer
Hey Rob paint turned out great..good colour choice..Cant wait to start bashing the side of the box with my excavator bucket ...lol
