Fumotec 490
So I finally bought one and it arrived last week
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0514.jpg Ordered a 6 valve block from Premacon, a quick coupling from Fumotec and his new rotating screen bucket - still to be delivered I've started to assemble some parts, then I will take it all apart to paint it. http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0516.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0515.jpg The only thing I'm missing is a battery I would like a lipo but I'm unsure what to buy? The heavier the better as it will be mounted in the counter weight. |
Re: Fumotec 490
Congratulations looking good forward to your build
|
Re: Fumotec 490
Congrats! You will enjoy assembling it!
The Li-Po I use for mine is 3S 5000mAh. Cont. 40C/Burst: 80C It's 15.5cm (6 inches) by 4.5cm (1¾ inches) by 2.5 cm (1 inch) and just fits in the counterweight with some room left over for the wires. |
Re: Fumotec 490
WOW!!! Congratulations Calum, quite an enjoyable model to put together for sure.
I put in a 5 valve block & it seemed to spread nearly the entire width... 6 will be tight! I also use a 3s 5000mAh lipo from Team Enrich-Power that measures 135mm x 42mm x 28mm The hyd pump that comes with this model is ridiculously fast & with such small bore cyls, cycle time is very quick! even with the motor rpm at 50%. I set my pressure to 18bar, seems plenty to keep the model planted while digging. Good luck with the build, hope it goes together easily for you. :) |

I asked Frank about a 6th valve and he said it should be fine, hopefully it will work for me.. I remember you saying about your's been a little quick did you ever change anything or do you just use it like that? I shall have a look at that battery too Thanks Calum |

Okay, I will have a look at that too. I plan on making a box/mount for it to sit in behind the valves if I have enough room Regards Calum |
Re: Fumotec 490
Slow progress from the weekend but paint has showed up so after a first assemble I will strip it back down and hopefully paint and assemble the undercarriage

Re: Fumotec 490
More progress this weekend but sadly not very much! I've assembled my tracks but i had 2 links missing so an email to Frank and he's sending me ones to finish them off
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...BD1AD26158.jpg I've primed all the metal parts for the undercarriage and I will hopefully put some colour on them this week http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...FE23A77A01.jpg And finally a picture of my valves and pump on the base plate to check what space is available for mounting my electrics http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...E70DB5C1E5.jpg Calum |
Re: Fumotec 490
Nice photos. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Fumotec 490
Hi Calum, nice/interesting to see the progress pictures. Looks like the finish of the various pieces has improved too from when I build mine.
That valve block sure looks impressive! Note - I know the upper rollers are just installed temporarily (pictures posted )9/23), but be aware that the shorter end is supposed to be to the outside. In the pictures you have them alternating. That way your track will not track. Here a picture of what I mean: http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...psb8b35221.jpg |

The valve block really is an excellent piece! Its a premacon block and weighed over 400g without the the servo's fitted Good spot, I hadn't noticed that I had to file out the holes to get the bolts to be a looser fit. I will swap them about when I rebuild Calum |
Re: Fumotec 490
Undercarriage mostly assembled - I'm having some difficultly programming the ESC for the track drives can anyone help?
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...8DFE5CC94C.jpg |
Re: Fumotec 490
Hi Calum, what is the exact problem you have? I remember having a hard time myself. One of the ESCs has to run in reverse to the other. I could not get that to work, for some reason the ESC kept reverting to the default program. Ended up reversing the input in the radio.
|
Re: Fumotec 490
I can get the track to go forwards and stop but cannot get it to reverse? I assume i'm following the programming correctly but its a little vague..
Calum |
Re: Fumotec 490
Hi Calum, sounds like you are in Air/Heli mode which doesn't allow reverse. Needs to be in Car/Boat mode. Is kind of explained in the manual how to do it.

Re: Fumotec 490
Yes, that manual needs some reading to make sense of it. Took me a while too to get the tracks working properly.
By the time you have the whole excavator assembled you are looking at a good 20kg. Not the easiest thing to carry around. Already put a couple of nice dings in the doors here. |
Re: Fumotec 490
Due to buying a house and having to move, I've hardly touched the excavator but this last week or so I found some time to continue on with it
I wanted all my electrics to be in one place and be as neat as possibly so I built this http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0758.jpg The slew, pump and aux ESC are mounted at the bottom, then the top part has points for positive and negative connections. My receiver will be mounted to the top part as well. A general look over the machine http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0760.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0759.jpg I'm still waiting on a battery, trying to find a good quality Lipo which is suitable for my machine hasn't been easy, also buying from Europe seems to impossible due to laws preventing postage. So i'm just waiting on someone getting back to me next week about one which will hopefully do the job Calum |
Re: Fumotec 490
I have this lipo in my kat Venom 1552 3S 11.1V 7500mAh 30C Lipo
134 x 43 x 44 mm / 5.28 x 1.69 x 1.73 in got it off ebay |
Re: Fumotec 490
Venom is a great brand, I use them in 4s in my 850. Everything else runs on 3s & they're all EnrichPower brand. Both 4s & 3s batts are 5000mAh. A lil on the pricy side, but very reliable, not a moments trouble with any of them, charging or using.

Re: Fumotec 490
Very tidy and nicely laid out!
You already got some good advice on the battery, but here is even another one: :-) I have this battery in my excavator. It's quite cheap and small while still at the 3S 5200 mAh capacity and costs only $19: http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/wid...&tag=tube00-20 MultiStar 3s 5200mAh (Mine has a XT-60 discharge plug but the Amazon text reads XT-90. I believe that is wrong.) Best regards, Stein :-) |
Re: Fumotec 490
Thanks for the advice on batteries guys, I was recommend hacker batteries on a German forum and they seems to fit my needs so I am hoping to source these otherwise i'll have to look at others. Posting is the problem because they can only be delievered by road

Re: Fumotec 490
A little bit more done with the boom and the auxiliary lines
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0763.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0765.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0764.jpg |
Re: Fumotec 490
Great updates! Get this puppy running!
|
Re: Fumotec 490
So you have 2 auxiliaries & the hyd quick coupler? Six valves really fill up the back of the model... I thought 5 was bad enough!
|
Re: Fumotec 490
Hi Calum, great updates! Really like the solution you crafted for the electronics. What a difference with the mess I made...

Re: Fumotec 490
It wouldn't be that much of an imposition to extend the width of the counter weight to house a thicker battery. The 5amp EnrichPower batts are quite compact for the punch they have.
|
Re: Fumotec 490
I'm hoping it wont come to that, I've spent some time measuring for batteries and thinking this one should fit in there nicely
http://www.hacker-motor-shop.com/e-v...&c=5649&p=5649 So 2 should hopefully coming into the UK this week.. |
Re: Fumotec 490
Basically nothing done tonight, I was planning on make a channel for the servo wires to lye in but decided just to route the around the servo's I'll see how this looks/works for now.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...G_0771%201.jpg A picture of my quick coupler partially assembled http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0770.jpg And a small attachment too http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0769.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0768.jpg Calum |
Re: Fumotec 490
Sunday night I made a bit of rock protection for the stick out of brass flat bar and box section
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0774.jpg Fitted to the stick http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0775.jpg I then made up brass pins for the end of the stick, these were made from 4mm brass rod. Threaded and castle nuts with split pins too, I ordered 1mm split pins to replace the ones I used as I think their a little large http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0780.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0779.jpg 2 of the auxiliary pipes were mounted to both sides and the hydraulic ram too http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0777.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/w...h/IMG_0778.jpg |
Re: Fumotec 490
Nice details!

Re: Fumotec 490
Thank you, I have a few more too add next time I get time to work with it. Getting majorly held up waiting for a battery sadly..

Re: Fumotec 490
It lives! Now I have a question - how do people setup their remotes?
Should I run the pump on a 3 way switch so it has 2 speeds? The other option I have is to use mixes, I can get on valve to open and power the pump on a curved mix but when I try to add more they don't work? Also setting up the slew with a Servonaut MFR, I've slowed it right down but it takes a lot of movement to make it move so precise moves aren't easy. Any suggestions? Calum |
Re: Fumotec 490
Hi Calum
I have the Servonaut MFR on the fast setting, so takes only a very limited movement of the stick to make it go slow (and scale) enough to keep control. But there is some play in the whole slewing mechanism. As for the pump ... The way it is set up in the Commander from Scaleart, you can control the speed of the pump with a separate control which allows you to set the speed of the pump, independent of the mixer which will make the pump go faster depending on the opening of the valves. I have the pump running at maybe 10-15% of it's capacity at all times so there is no lag when you start opening the valves. Seems to work fine for me, even when operating more than one valve. |
Re: Fumotec 490

I want to run mixes so the more the valve is opened the faster the pump goes but for some reason I can only get one mix to work? Calum |
Re: Fumotec 490
Hi Calum,
Seems like the MFR is no longer produced by Servonaut ... There is a small potentio thingy on the MFR that allows you to set the RPM of the motor. If I remember correctly you have to put the jumper on AB and then select the modus that allows you to change the reaction speed of the motor. I have the German piece of paper with the instructions that came with the MFR, but can't really figure it out anymore. As for the mixer, might be some limitation in your radio? ... The Commander was preprogrammed for the Damitz excavator. Never really checked how it was set up. All I did was remove the link for the mixer from the slew and track functions. Sorry can't really help you there. |

Re: Fumotec 490
Hi Calum, wish I could help you out with the radio, but since I barely grasp the use of the mixers over multiple functions on my own equipment ... Think you will be better off posting your question on the German forum. I figure there will be one or more guys with a 490 and a Graupner.
