HillBilly Deluxe update 4/28/12

Well right now it's not very deluxe, maybe some hillbilly. The Wedico bug bit me, thanks Nathan, Wade and Rick, you guys suck! LOL!! I found this Pete cab kit and pro chassis on another forum for $425.00, seems cheap till you start adding in what it will cost to finish it.

I call it HillBilly Deluxe my wife probably calls it grounds for divorce.

Hmmm, wonder what color it will be...

BTW, I have the rest of the cab parts, just haven't gotten that far yet. Will probably have a sleeper before it's over.

Congratulations Craig! The metal bodied vehicles are so cool. I would like to build a wedico Pete someday too when finances permit.:)

Please post lots of pics along the way because I don't see or know much about the Wedico Petes.

Will do. Check Nathan (Espeefan) and Rick (Rogue) builds those guy both have beautiful Wedico Petes. Scott if I waited until finance permit not sure it would ever happen, going to have to do this a little at a time.

Claus, Have you thought about trying to replicate the grille in the 2+2 in your new truck? Something different and it might catch on.

Re: HillBilly Deluxe

Craig, glad I could help you spend some money! :D You are off to a great start. I was once in the same boat as you. Had Tamiyas and while I liked them, I knew I would never be fully satisfied with them 100%. That's not to take away anything from the guys who build some wonderful Peterbilts out of the King Haulers, because they surely have talent - more then I do, when it comes to styrene - but I didn't think I would ever have the ability to create a truck exact enough for what I wanted. Besides that, the Wedico scale is a closer match to our die-cast tractor collections too. Welcome to club. By the way, you got a smokin' deal on that cab and chassis. Lucky guy.

Just playing around with something last night, I'm not going to do this but if a guy wanted to the Tamiya transmission could be made to fit in the Wedico with some work but not as much work as I thought.

Like I said Chris, not doing it, just wondered if it could be done.

Craig,
Getting bit by the Wedico bug means you drool over pics of them. Actually buying one means you contracted a fatal disease !!:o

Like Nathan said, glad we could help spend your money.

P.S. Do NOT drill holes in that smooth roof. If you want to add lights and horns, I have a drilled roof section I will work with you on. The smooth ones are like hens teeth.

Thanks Paul! Funny you mention me being broke from this truck, every time I see one of your builds I think to myself " there goes poor frugal Paul again on one of his budget builds". NOT!!!!:D

I did put a little more together tonight.

Nice! Just noticed you've got a set of the PMD breathers. Those are not stock Wedico breathers there!

Thanks Nathan, stole them off of my King Hauler.

Re: HillBilly Deluxe

It's setting on it's own wheels for now. Those plastic Wedico wheels sure are ugly. I have to agree with Nathan the way Wedico mounts the fuel tanks sucks. I used my RcDamper mounts for my King Hauler, they are much better, maybe not 100% scale but much better. They move the fuel tanks down and out. I still need to figure out what I am going to do with the stacks. My progress is going to slow down now as I'm about out of parts for now.

I agree on the mounts...they look much better the way you have them.
Who cares if they are not the exact scale...as long as they improve the over all
stance of the truck,ya know what I mean!

Re: HillBilly Deluxe

Looks way better, in my humble opinion! I don't know what Wedico was thinking when they more less threw the fuel tanks onto the frame rails with some straps like that. Wedico does offer a plastic tank mount, for those who wonder, but you must buy it separately. It's (Wedico's mount) a small improvement over the strap alone. It's kind of like a plastic version of the RC Damper mounts.

Time for a small update. I always wanted to try a hardwood floor, not perfect but not bad. Also Nathan sold me a 3 speed and I kept my PMD 4:1 reduction. I have some new parts coming in soon from Ric, hope to have another small update soon.

Your driver looks pretty happy with floor, even though he can't really drive anywhere at the moment! Good to see that 3 speed will be useful for you. I can't wait to see what comes in from PMD.

Nice tank pannels and nice details for the cab!
I´ll keep an eye on this for my next procect. ;)
...I bought an old WEDICO conventional for a rebuilt and also thought about a wooden floor...

How does that gear reduction on the right side work? Is it a panetary gearbox or spur gear design...?

Here are a few more recent photos. I bought a red cab kit, red sleeper kit and front float tires and aluminum rims. The floorboard was missing from the sleeper kit, have to see about that. The truck is a long, long, long way from the finish line but at least it is starting to look like the truck I want.

For what the cab, sleeper and front tires/rims cost you could buy two King Hauler kits, but this is what I wanted.

Looking good so far! Are those the stock pipes?

Claus 08-11-2011 09:17 AM

Re: HillBilly Deluxe

Michael, those are stock pipes with 3/8" tops slipped over the stock tops. Tamiya Cowboy made me those back when your truck was mine.;)

Espeefan 08-11-2011 10:23 AM

Re: HillBilly Deluxe

Looks nice, Craig. It's good shade of red. Still thinking about doing some black fenders and a black cab roof? Two King Hauler kits for the price of the cab and front wheels/tires? Ouch. How do you guys afford these darn Wedicos? :D Oh well, you've got to be pretty happy with the truck and how it looks now.
