Another KAT on the prowl
Much has been already written about the chinese KAT, so i won't bore you with many of the particulars. I have been asked a couple of times though what i thought of it........I would venture to say that some unique building skills are required to make this a more working models. I was disappointed but not supprised at the workmanship. Loose screws, missing screws, filled-n-holes, bent-undercarriage (when received) loose turntable, etc. Over all though, i figure that i have a good set of parts to work with at a relative inexpensive cost. For the time it would have taken me to get all the pieces drawn, laser cut , time involved, i would have spent close to this money money.
I have already started changing some things on it. http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psa3f1cadb.jpg Square-up body http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps6d3dcc0a.jpg Replaced these with....... http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps8695a5d8.jpg With this aluminium C-channel.....and machine shop making idle wheel, this is not a bicycle, two sprockets on one chain doesnt work. http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psef0888ca.jpg http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...pse11fabf2.jpg http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps453efd2e.jpg http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps3523f5bd.jpg http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps43347b57.jpg Tapping M5 holes http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps1110bcfb.jpg Nylon bushings with nut inserts http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psf40d0fb7.jpg |
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
Welcome to the club;) I am not surprised to see another 'demolished' KAT on the 'operating table'.. My guess is that the fabricator have $150, maximum?, in labor and materials put into the basic machine) But as stated before, with some modifications, it can turn out a fine machine. I most of all like the tracks, I think that the fabricator has done a good job on them.

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
I agree with ya on the tracks........going to get mine sand blasted
|
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
I also have this excavator. I received mine on 1-16-14 I also had damage on delivery. Mine has a bent track drive outer plate at the rear sprocket, the undercarriage is bent, I also had missing bolts. I guess every body that buys this excavator can expect to do some fab work.

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
give that its not cheap, is it worth it? looking at input so far, you have to basically rebuild it...

If it needs the 4200xl cyl.and all this modification to make it worthy, wouldn't it be as expensive just to purchase the 4200xl as it's a proven sting digger compared to wedico? Don't get me wrong, I like to see different companies building them to allow competition and lower prices. |
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
Looking good there Rob. When I saw you got one I knew there were going to be some good modifications coming. Ed

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
A lil more progress....

I might be crazy, but this thing is kinda fun to work on. Chris, i farmed them out to a machine shop.....it was 200.00 for all the peices excluding the rods and springs. If you interested, ill check see with him. He does this in-between his real work. Took three wks for all parts. |
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
Hey Rob,I forgot to ask you on the phone, how are you getting access to too the slack adjusters? The tracks work great.

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
I would be further along if I could get rc4wd to answer their emails or get a phone.......geeeeze! By the time they answer your questions, the part is out of stock again.

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
Looking great so far!

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
The tracks looks really nice, steel, alu or die cast?
What's the measurements of the track pads? |
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
These are the same tracks that came with the KAT......I just had them sandblasted.

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
I've been thinking of scrach building an excavator to go with my rc low loader. But seeing this thread has made me think of buying one of these kats and modding it. So the question is can the flimsy sounding kat take it and can it take the hydraulics and the power that goes with them
|
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
I think i made a good choice. I am redoing it a bit to make it stronger and up to my spec's. Im using rc4wd cylinder and a brushless pump.

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
I bought this new swing ring. It is approx. 2 1/4 across from inside to inside. The Slipring from rcwd will not fit insode this ring. You will need a slipring smaller than this one. The pinion gear is large thus taking up the space inside the ring. The ideal slewring would have an external tooth.....for that i am still searching. Also i purchased the slipring that is advertised on the KAT website.....it is not going to work either. The wires are somewhat bigger than human hair. and the turntable is about the size of 6 stacked quarters.

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
The Leimbach is external teeth. Contact this place in Germany to get it. (I doubt you find part/price on his website).

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
Much ablidged Joe
|
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
Nice upgrades Rob!! Will you use the RC4WD radio for this machine or just a standard?
|
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
I did got the new slewring but the pinion takes up most of the space. That rc4wd slipring is huge. I ordered the one from Germany.
Jake: I'm going to use my Airtronics, it has all the mixing features i want for the pump operation. |
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
Hey Rob you rdoing an excellent job on this, im interested to know how strong that new slew bearing from china is? would it be suitable for a bigger machine? are the gear teeth metal or plastic?
cheers |
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
Here are several pics of the new slewringw with and w/o the pinion and slipring.

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
Well, I think i have figured out the slip/slew ring problem that has been plaguing the KAT. The pics will explain.
I cut and shortened the rc4wd slip ring down to a workable height http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psaaa15063.jpg http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps25f42d0a.jpg http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps86515204.jpg http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps3e9e2c09.jpg http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps66e761d4.jpg I bored out the diameter of the slew ring to fit the diameter of the slip ring. This not fits atop the slip ring. http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...ps11d850f7.jpg http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psc65b009e.jpg http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h1...psf48835d6.jpg |
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
Hey rob glad you are getting things worked out with the rotory ..Sometimes it takes a bit to find something to fit ..Question ..your opinion on the tracks ..are they cast aluminum and do they look strong enough ?..they look pretty good from the photos

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
who makes the cylinders? i'm having nothing but trouble with my kat..
it will spend most of this weekend at cabin fever on the lowboy |
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
These are the replacement for the original ones. I got the second version of the KAT and it came with smooth cylinders. Once i figured out the hydraulic, everything else was pretty easy. What are you having issues with....im no expert, but maybe can shed some trial and error experience.
|
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
stupid stuff. cylinders leaking the pump is shown as
a brushless but i got a brushed and it screams to make the cylinders move. you cant do more then one function at a tim |
Re: Another KAT on the prowl
You are absolutely right about the brushed pump....if yours is like mine was, the coupler is off-centered too and it wobbles. It sitting in my junk pile. I bought the brushless the same time i bought the unit. I also junked the valves too. These valves are from tawain. they work great. I drilled the open from 2mm to 4mm for a better flow. What you see in the vid is after the mods to the valve block. i cleaned the threaded area REAL-GOOD and applied TL to the nipple and let set....no leaks there and no leaks .....so far from the heads.

Re: Another KAT on the prowl
are you using the morpower valve??
