More than just a thought ...
Picked up a lego crane for xmas... then got too anxious and had it built up 3 weeks before xmas. Really like it but it's not the same as our trucks.
So I decided to build a crane. Not very far along. I've chosen wheels tires axels springs. I purchased a sample test of each and modeled them up in CAD to set the basis of the design. |

TLT axels
RC4WD - rims - wheels - leaf springs |
Re: just a thought
hows the progress
|
Re: just a thought
Pretty good so far - I modeled the axels and tires up this past week. Since I do this before or after work this might be sporatic.

Re: just a thought
Knowing your builds Izzy, this will be good. Watching with anticipation!

Brian - hope to have a roller at Indy.

Re: just a thought
Super design of crane. I wanna see the photos of complete project. please put photos once you have done it.

Re: just a thought
Gibbs98 - the Plan is to show progress start to finish. I am showing the designs as I evolve them. Since I am working on design before and after work, little is happening Saturday and Sunday.

Re: just a thought
Spent last few days going through the outrigger supports several times and calling different businesses trying to find the right combination of extrusions.
and we have success. then added sprockets and shafts to drive the primary stage. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psvhx7siro.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psubhpcmnk.jpg |
Re: just a thought
On Monday I had ordered tube extrusions and today I added some detail to the cab.

Tally thus far
design time 16hr build time 1 hr |
Re: More than just a thought ...
Great design using the firgielli's (spelling?) as outriggers, your talent consistently blows me away

Re: More than just a thought ...
Wow, this is going to be one large crane..... great design so far keep up the great work..
|
Re: More than just a thought ...
Thanks guys.
Went in early and stayed late to spend 2hr at the mill. Stage 2 and 3 outrigger tube are further along. |

Chi-Noos
don't get my hopes up. But I have been thinking about this build for several years. BTW firgelli's came in, extrusions came and the first order from servocity came in. Next order due Monday. wheels and rims are on back order. |
Re: More than just a thought ...
Looks like a Terex AC350 to me, am I right?
For inspiration, look at the LTM1400 from Richard: http://www.rmw-technoscalemodels.nl/...n/ltm1400.html There are two of those BTW. I have often photographed this crane, and did some driving and hoisting as well. He is also building a LR1750 crawler crane. There are not a lot of cranes out there, always nice to see a crane build. Kerst and Eef7260 here on the forum made some nice cranes as well. |

William - your getting close. Good to know about the other cranes. I'll go take a peak later this weekend.
Chi-Noosa - hard not to be decent at Cad - it's my day job. |
Re: More than just a thought ...
After a few hours at work and hittin the gym .....
Cranked up the Lathe - still had frost on it from the -12F morning.... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psijfjhisc.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psujjchkjn.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psawnvywtf.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps7are0z7d.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps5oddvnzl.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psnlaoxq9f.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psvbhv7qyb.jpg |

Re: More than just a thought ...
so with the 2 hrs this morning I am up to 18 for design.
and 1 hr earlier this week, 1 hr yesterday morning and 4 hr today for a today of 6 hr build. |
Re: More than just a thought ...
Looking good Izzy. How many channels is it going to take to operate the crane?
|
Re: More than just a thought ...
Hmmm - good question
- Power drive/stabilize - Fwd / Rev - Steer axels 1 & 6 - Steer 2 & 5 - Steer 3 & 4 Outrigger stage 1 Outrigger stage 2 Outrigger A Outrigger B Outrigger C Outrigger D Power Carriage Pivot Right / Left Boom Lift/Lower (hydraulic) Boom Extension ?????? Cable In / Out Counter weight Lift/Lower Counter weight in/out at least 18 I suppose - not sure how I am doing the boom extension just yet. I was figuring to have 3 receivers -2 battery sources driving Stabilizing Boom and Carriage |

I picked up a frsky taranis radio for $279. A lot of heli aerial photography guys use them. I'm not wanting to push anything but this radio works for me and is on par or better than $$$ other systems. Here is a clip of the specs.
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/...psc3db1fe1.jpg More than I will ever need but for a build like this it is a less expensive idea :). |
Re: More than just a thought ...
Chi-Noos - really high end stuff can. Spectrum does 18 but it's really a 9 with a servo split that doubles over to 18. Not real sure how it's done but it's available.
Cooper - appreciate the info. As of right now. Since you don't operate support legs while driving or boom functions while driving or working legs . I figure to use a 10 channel and 3 diff er entry receivers - switching models in between. Therefore 30 sets of 10 channels spectrum DX10 |

Re: More than just a thought ...
Ok so yesterday I cut the extrusions for the chassis. Last night I drilled a bunch of holes and made fixtures to hold the parts for the summer frames. This morning I did some more mill work for the spring mounts. And when I got home I cleaned up a bunch of burrs from all that.
So add another 5 hr to the build. Stopping by the alum. Shop to see if they can tack weld my sub frames together. |
Re: More than just a thought ...
Some of Mondays work - outer support leg tube
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps4ybbuwbk.jpg Yesterday and this morning - suspension sub frames and bumper http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psewvu5d0j.jpg |
Re: More than just a thought ...
Wow this is going to be a build and half!! Hats off to you, can't wait to see it working!! Just from my stuff I have to put stickey notes on things to remember what switches do what, you might need to make a operators manual!! Lol :). So what did you do for the gear that drives the rack? Is that a motor or actuators also? (To extend the supports outward).
