dodge L 1000
Hi guys im new here and wanted to share my current build, I had a merc frame rail set laying around so I decided to search the net for a cool cab over and all I could find was a dodge L1000 LOL! So I decided to build one, actually I think its cool as can be and different which for me is always good!
I started with the chassis running an R2 and the merc rear locked I will be installing some RC4WD tires for it. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...bigrigs009.jpg started on the cab http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...bigrigs010.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...bigrigs005.jpg gettin their! http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...%20ton/003.jpg starting the details http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/004-1.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/003-1.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/002-1.jpg |

Re: dodge L 1000
Thanks Guys! Thanks for the invite to the board TC.
I made a crappy little video of it on the living room flor with the rck hard tamiya tires(boy do they suck) and I will post it in a few. |
Re: dodge L 1000
This will be cool! What color do you plan to paint it?
|
Re: dodge L 1000
Its going t be a baby blue weathered paint job.

Re: dodge L 1000
That Looks GREAT! is the cab going to tilt?
|
Re: dodge L 1000
You're doing a great job on this old school rig. Speaking of old school, imo, you should put two or five hole wheel's. I think she'd be sharp:):D
Can't wait to see more, and keep the great work, and pic's coming our way. Big John |
Re: dodge L 1000
Yea I plan to get some small hinges from the LHS tomorrow along with some CA. I keep thinking I need to detail this cab out,but the more I look at the 1:1 their just isnt that much detail in it.. I hope to glue all the panels together and build the dog house as well as most of the interior this wekend..
Oh I also received the tires from RC4WD and it makes a huge difference with this rig. I think I will also add BBs to the tires before I paint and glue the rims. If it works for smallhaul Its good enough for me!!! |
Re: dodge L 1000
Wow,it's RCJB! Kool Man! Glad to see you here!
I was gunna comment on this build over on scale, but now I can do it here. I see over on scale, you were asking about moving the axle forward a bit. If you decide to,the tamiya reefer trailer main spring works perfect for these little cab over trucks. Nice job so far! FGD |
Re: dodge L 1000
Thanks Freddy I think I have room to move the springs forward just enough to make it look good. I will look into the trailer springs for the rear room between the wheels is killing me when it comes to the fuel tank..I already built one but it wasnt big enough and it hardly fit..

Re: dodge L 1000
Maybe you find somsway to up a set of split rims......

A simple insert that pops into the existing wheel would work just fine. There's a few on here that have used this method including myself and it achieves the look without having to go all out on a one-off rim assembly. -Alex |
Re: dodge L 1000
Thanks for the suggestions fellas, i have been thinking about what to do with the rims. I think im going to remove the chrome and fill the outter holes and then make just 2 oval style holes like a pic of a 1:1 I found.then paint them white.
I managed a little time for it this morning. built the tilt hinge, just a piece of brass tubing brazed to a flat brass plate which will be the radiator when you look throught the grill. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/005-3.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/006-1.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/007-1.jpg made the windows their all made to remove by taking out the lower screws and sliding them from the slots in the top. I wanted to be able to get the weather stripping painted good and not fear getting paint on the windows. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/004-3.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/003-3.jpg |
Re: dodge L 1000
The front hinge and windows are looking great. Can't wait to see that hinge changed into a radiator, are you going to make the flutes in it with soldered brass strips?

Re: dodge L 1000
Thanks man, I was thinking I would go up to the local mall and see if the engraving shop would engrave all the wiggly cooling fins into it horizontaly and the tubes verticaly..

Re: dodge L 1000
Update
built a wiper, couple grab handles, foot step and a handle for the front. I will make the ones for the pass side tomorrow morning. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/003-4.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/004-4.jpg and a mirror mount , the mirrors will be made from styrene http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/005-4.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/005-4.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/002-3.jpg see ya later.. |

Re: dodge L 1000
Nice Nice work!! That looks perfect on there!! Keep up the great work..
|
Re: dodge L 1000
Thanks TC I will try..What do you guys think about mounting a spare tire to the left of the exhaust? I havent seen a pic of a spre mounted their on a 1:1, but I always liked the look of it??Also my plan of making it look rusted just went out the window as I was looking around on google images and came across a sales add from back in the day and it said these cabs were aluminum and the lower skirts were made from fiberglass.. I guess I will have to paint it in an aluminum color and then paint over that and then sand away some of the top coat leaving the aluminum exposed which should look prety cool!

Re: dodge L 1000

Re: dodge L 1000
I had ran snap-on for a while and one day I pulled into an older fellas one man shop and he was on his way up his graveled drive way to get on the truck. All of a sudden their was a huge bang and a giant plume of dust and the guy disappeared(it scared the **** out of me) then calmly the old man walkes out of the dust and sayes I think your tire blew out?????LOL..I wish I had one of thes on my truck at the time it would have saved me alot of money..
so thats one thing I wount have to worrie with on this rig! http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/004-7.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/002-6.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/001-4.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/005-7.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/005-7.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...0ton/006-3.jpg |

Re: dodge L 1000
Glad I stopped by and got caught up on this build. Excellent work. Should be a killer when painted:D
|
Re: dodge L 1000
wow! nice job! looks like she will do an endo every time you hit the brakes with no trailer.
|
Re: dodge L 1000
I like it. Very cool little truck. Great work

Re: dodge L 1000
Interesting 5th wheel. What is that from and what did you make your tanks from? Lovin' the ingenuity used here. Had a second read through and the grab rails, well, I would imagine that drilling the holes in the flat ends must have been a royal pain in the butt!
|
Re: dodge L 1000
thanks guys. As for the sth wheel its from a bruder truck, but it isnt the one I will be using for the build. I plan to get a tamiya 5th wheel from joes truckstop soon. And drilling out the grab rails were a bit of a pain in the rear LOl oh the tank is an old pill bottle with one end cut off and some styrene glued to it. I have an update on the tank mount so stay tuned for some pics..

Re: dodge L 1000
boy you dont waste any time! your brass work is amazeing! that stack is freaky real looking! i also think the weathered look will look great for your truck. it is alot more work then just some spray rust but it will pay off for the look your going for!now i got to watch carroll drive the blue mule through the sighn on you tube after seeing this truck!hahahaha

Re: dodge L 1000
