Caterpillar 990H - 1:14.5

5 Attachment(s)
Hi All. I wanted to start this topic since a long time, but this is the first time i have something not only on my computer screen, but here on my table.

Few words about this project: i'm building a Caterpillar 990H in 1:14.5 scale, material is mainly stainless steel. I'm almost done with the design/plans of the machine, so shortly i will have the parts, and finally can start assembling it.

Before continuing i would like to thank to the members of this forum for the graet ideas, informations, and inspirations (by inspiration i mean a such great work like Stefan did: http://www.rctruckandconstruction.co...ead.php?t=3587)

---

Where to start? Enough talking, i will post some images now.
Here are the first 3D models:

Wait…so there's ANOTHER unique 990 model out there? Just when I thought I had seen it all lol. Also, awesome job, can't wait to see the finished thing.

(sorry for the messy attachements, this is my first post, and i didn't figured it out how to attach an image or YT video to the post, instead of the image browser, which doesn't have thumbnails...)

Here are another 3 pictures from the CAD soft in which i design the part for production

Ok, and finally the reason of why i have opened this topic, is the 3D printed half-tire which will be the master piece of the tire mold:

This is before any sanding...

Oh yes, i forgot to mention that the selection of this machine was cause of the first pic you posted on your build's topic: i just fell in love with it. The time i was started the 3D model, the 990H was the latest model. Now when 990K is out, i'm thinking of changing my plans, but this would take a bit of time, and i'm so inpatient to see the laser cut parts asap.

That 3D print was very nice. What machine are you using?

It was made on an Objet Eden260VS by a company here in Hungary. They are added some coating to make it smooth, but there are some spots where it was not filled properly...

It's great to see your post and the loader project is coming to life Abel. :). I haven't heard from you in awhile and was wondering how things were coming along.
Looking forward to seeing this beauty come together. :):bounce:

Re: Caterpillar 990H - 1:14.5

Wow!! From the quality I see so far this is going to be a very interesting build which I´ll follow closely. Thanks for linking my build, I´m really honored. Nice coincident with the number ;) (my 990 never got any letter increment, however. Indeed, it never got any letter at all and is now discontinued :( )

Your master (half) tire looks very good. Maybe you already know there is a small company in Germany (sorry, only in German) making flexing tires on request. Like the tires on the Braeker wheel loader. They also make custom tires from masters like yours. Only problem is they currently have difficulties meeting demand (one key person being ill).

In any case, I wish you great success with your build.

Stefan

Thanks... A little update, the 3d print after sanding (50% done)

Clearly visible that the center is still intact, there the surface is quiet rough.

Stefan: thannks for the links, and the tip for custom tire making. I will try a guy here in Hungary, he say he can do tires from 2 different type of PU (outside/inside) to make behave like the one you linked...

Re: Caterpillar 990H - 1:14.5

A little progress here: i finally finished designing the whole drivetrain, and will go for producing the gears/axles. There are a total of 40 gears, and 10 different shape. Here are some pics of the drivetrain:

The planetary gear setup:

The prototype of the tire is done, and will serve as master for the final tire mold (sorry for my english, sometime i feel unable to express myself), here are some pics of it:

Excellent!!!! The tire looks great! What type of engine and transmission set up are you using?
The planetary gears are going to be awesome!

Re: Caterpillar 990H - 1:14.5

Thanks! The engine will be a Turnigy XK5674 a 1050 KV brushless motor running at 14.4V (i have to find a good ESC with rpm limitation support).

Wow, great project, I am thinking about starting to design my loader too. Your tire looks great. Is it soft or hard rubber?
Also, love the planetary setup on the hubs. Do you have a solution for this? Will you buy small gears or build them all?

Thanks. The tires are made from soft Polyurethan (not as soft as you may think). The gears will be produced for order, as the whole drivetrain.

The tires are almost all done, i will post a few pics soon.

Re: Caterpillar 990H - 1:14.5

Are the tires cast in one part or two? Two, then glued together?

Looks very nice!

They are cast in one part.

Hi, i know there wasn't any update since a while, but this project is still active. I have worked too much with the plans to sell it now.

Thanks for your interest, but as i mentionned before, the project is still alive, and in progress. I do not want to sell it, i have too much work in it, do give it away. If everything is going well, this year finally i will be able to start building it.

The tires are done since a while, but i didn't posted it yet, as i think they are not good enough, but at least i will have something to use when building the chassis.

Don’t beat yourself up! The tires look great! They won’t stay pristine in the dirt.
Cheers, Neil.

Thanks :) i like the look too, but while i cleaned the tires, i find out that the tire's two sides can be separated by force. It seems they wasn't molded correctly.

I was trying to figure out how the lock ring on the rim works because I couldn't see any retainers or split in it to allow it to come off. Then I realized the rims are two halves sharing the planetary bolts. It looks great!
