D11 New Project

Hi Guys, I have just started this project so I thought I would give some video and pictures during the build. This video is the start of machining the track links.

Whats the scale going to be?

Nice start! Are you doing this at home or where you work? Would love to have that mill at home :D

The scale is 1/15 and I am lucky enough to have a brother inlaw who has this fantastic workshop. Not to sure on how long it will take as it has to fit in with real work. He Is the one without the hat.

:eek:I don't think it'll take you that long Can I come down and play in that shop ? I see some machines that'll really help me out :D . I'll be watching ;)

Re: D11 New Project

Yeah a great set up but we will be building three at the same time, two for remote and one as static. It's a long way to travel if you want to play down under.

Okumas:eek::eek::eek: I have been running them for 25 years! I might just have to beat Steve down there so I can play:rolleyes: It won't take that long to make the D11 with those at your disposal:D

Nifty!

You gonna design/build your own hyd systems too?

I was scared as heck watching the head come down. The guy saying "don't crash don't crash" wasn't helping. This is going to be a fantastic build.

thats what I've been saying with mine before I figure out why it crashed everytime it finished  the cam writen program sent the head to the table before it shut off  well a little edit now and no more crashy :)

Re: D11 New Project

:)Hi Lil Giants, sorry I can't remember your name its been a while. The hydraulic system will consist of the Leimbach pump and valves from my 345d and the cylinders will be self made. I need more valves for the 345d because of the new quick release so I will put new equipment into that.

I've been waiting for you to start this we talked that time . The rails look great, but 3 dozers at a time. WOW.

Re: D11 New Project

Hi Joe long time, great to hear from you
Yes while the machines are set to run a program it just takes a little longer to make three, but they will all be the same. The workshop also has a foundery for casting ali and bronze and the thought at the moment is to cast the cab and body? and then put them in the CNC machining centre to shape them to size

Re: D11 New Project

I have to ask. Doesn't the shop have a metal cutting bandsaw??? With all of that expensive equipment, they have to have some kind of powered saw. Even in my meager shop, I have a metal cutting bandsaw .

In todays world nobody keeps their hand work skills up.:p I think he just wanted to do that and get some exercise in the process:D
All kidding aside, It looks like you got those track links down pat. One thing I would have tried to do is,machine the two holes or web in the sides of the links if possible. Can't wait to see some grousers spitting out of that machining center.
The casting of the outer body is a interesting idea. Maybe you have a product to sell down the road as a whole D11 kit.;)

titandigs 09-28-2011 05:33 AM

Re: D11 New Project

Yes indeed there are a couple of powered saws, but not a band saw. The problem with the powered saw is it has two sets of jaws and the pieces to be cut off are just short of the second set, so when the blade comes through it jams the track link back into the blade we lost one trying so we cut them off by hand:( Iam not sure what you mean about (One thing I would have tried to do is,machine the two holes or web in the sides of the links if possible.) Unless you are talking about the side view of the links?

I know what you mean about your chop saw and pieces getting caught between the jaws. Yes a band saw would help speed the process.
Here is a picture of what I was trying to describe. These holes are for the nut that holds the grouser plates.
With that nice machining center and 4th rotary axis it would be a breeze to mill those two pockets.

titandigs 09-28-2011 07:50 AM

Re: D11 New Project

Yes ok we looked at that but thought that the cutter would give a round finish and not give the nut enough to hold onto. The way we have done it should give maximum strength. Maybe if there is any interest in the finished model the next round could have this detail, but at this stage the three machines are for us to play with.:)

Re: D11 New Project

i have a question if all those peices are the rail links how do they go together your going to have to cut more out right? on each end i may have missed that and sory if i did but keep up the great work

titandigs 09-29-2011 06:35 AM

Re: D11 New Project

Yes very observant :)the next op will take out the extra material, we have got two pieces together (proto type) I will take a photo and put it up now.
These were the first links and track plates out of the machines, so the real thing will have a better fit and look.

Re: D11 New Project

Will there be a bushing on the short side for the pin to pass through? I like the start of those grousers. Will you drill and tap blind holes to mount them? Put a scale next to them so we can get a feel for the size of your tracks.

titandigs 09-29-2011 07:45 AM

Re: D11 New Project

If you have a look on page one, in the carboard box you will see the mounting holes for the track plates and the extra two holes are for holding the pin in place.
The track plates will be 61mm long based on a 36inch 1.1

9W Monighan 09-29-2011 08:01 AM

Re: D11 New Project

OPPS, I missed those holes:o I was noticing the Red Bull drink box. I guess that stuff is world wide. My kid drinks all that stuff. I'm afraid of it:D
2.40'' wide tracks, That will look really good.

tc1cat 09-29-2011 08:20 AM

Re: D11 New Project

Any thought of adding a full radius keyway cutter to your 1st op on the track links so you don't have to mill the inside ends of the track links for clearance in a 2nd op?? Like I said, I have been running 4 axis Okumas for over 20 years and know a lot of short cuts!! Also, you might want to look into fine-tooth roughing cutters to hog out most of the material on the track plates. Looks like you used 1 on 1 end of a track plate??

Just some ideas:):)

titandigs 09-29-2011 08:44 AM

Re: D11 New Project

:)I think by the end of tomorow the links for the three machines will be finished so we will just plod on then we will look at the track plates.

Pual , the plates look good :) I was thinking of making the 1's for my TD40 in 1 piece , but seing how yours are coming out ;) I think I just change my mind , although I only got a 3 axis  so , I'll just attack it differently :)

Re: D11 New Project

I see you said you are making 3 dozers at once. Are you planning on selling these or are they being made just for yourself?

titandigs 09-30-2011 06:13 AM

Re: D11 New Project

The scale is 1/15 and the three dozers will be one for me one for my nephew and the last for my brother-inlaw. Who knows if they turn out ok and there is interest a kit could be possible, but its not on the list of things to do as the time involved is huge

Those turned out really nice. Did you make the grousers one at a time or machine a longer strip then cut to proper length?
