500-ish ton mobile crane
|
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
this will be my first build post here so it better be a good one :D
OK so this is a rough idea of what I'm shooting for, I've been gathering parts for a few weeks now and I'm ready to start on it. the frame rails are 36 inches long and will have the cab sitting out front, 40-ish inches total. going to have the same axle lay out, lots of aluminum upgrades! and lots of time involved  |
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
Nice project! I look forward to seeing the boom design and implementation. Should be a beast when it's done. :)

Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
I didn't mean that in a bad way, seems like the Mountain Dew is giving Russ a very vivid imagination. Carry on.
Hey Russ, when it's done will it be able to lift your cat? |

Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
Hi russisloud,
I just measured your crane against my rig and its frigen hug looks like the build is coming along nice:D will be interested in how you make the telescopic mast for it, any plans for what the support truck to carry the extra equipment will be ? Cheers Cossett |
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
a support truck? o'my :p
|
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
picked up some stock for the boom today and chopped up a cab
http://i335.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/100_3798.jpg http://i335.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/100_3799.jpg http://i335.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/100_3797.jpg the main part of the boom is 3 x 1 1/2 tube 36inches long and is going to have 3 stages to it. i'm going to have to build some bad azz outriggers |
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
If you have the counter weight correct your out riggers only need to support the total weight of the crane. It shouldn't tip. I saw a guy at a show last year who was retired from Grove and he built a truck crane like yours only a older model that has a lattice boom he built from Stitka Spruce. When he booms it up all the way and adds his jib,he has 21' of boom. Then he demonstrated the erection of a scale model cell phone tower.
|
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
that would be kool to see. thanks for the info, i was going to add counter weights but really wasn't sure how much i was going to need. so that really helps
|
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
Nice build Russ
Where do you order your parts from ( tires, rims, axecels ) greg |
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
Very nice Russ, you have a very good imagination. If i could make a suggestion, consider using the Tamiya Super-Single tires.
|
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
Just saw a slightly smaller version of this going down the highway. All I can say is "WOW!!" This thing is going to be loooooonnnnggggg!!!!
|
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
Nice build, I'll be watching. What hydraulic cylinders are you going use?
|
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
Russ she is coming along nicely.. I am thinking we need to find you bigger tires for it and the boom trailer is a must the only time they run the boom forward is when on job sight but going down the road they have to use the toter for weight limit laws and i understand it is easier on the running gear of the crain to get the weight off its back..
|
Re: 500-ish ton mobile crane
Your crane looks great, can't wait to see more progress pics!!!
