Clifford The Work Horse

Well I told some people I had a truck in the works and that it would be revealed this weekend at the show and boy howdy was it. This poor truck showed up with less than ten mins test time on it and went straight to work. Other than blowing drive shaft yolks apart in the rear about 5 times I swapped it out and never had a problem the rest of the day. I also quickly found out that a little larger pinion gear in the tranny is very much needed.

Anyways I didn't do a full build up on this truck as it was a pretty quick project with left over parts I had lying around but here are some before, during the weekend and after pics just to show how the truck turned out.

Well thats a few of the pics that I have from this weekend and of the build up of this truck so far but it will be getting an over haul this next week with some new parts that I acquired this weekend along with a few other parts I didn't get put on it before the show.

Thanks for lookin guys and hope you like the truck. :D

Didn't quite get them finished before this weekend. I need to get them on and the tool box mounted as well as finish out the lift axle but atleast it was on there. :p

Well If I ever get my hands on one of them fancy KW grills this may just be changed over at some point. Just using parts that I had produced what you see currently. I also have some more "bling" for a work truck going on it this week as well.

Thanks for the compliment and I want it to be rugged, usable and still have good looks to it.

Travis I have to agree, I think I brought home close to 5lbs of dirt from the show between the truck and tractor. It was well worth the time playing though.

Re: Clifford The Work Horse

Well I took a little time changing out the pinion in Clifford to pick up some more speed and even out the power on it. Some of the guys this weekend got to see this guy pull through the dirt like a champ and break it's fair share of driveshafts as well as see how slowly I made the trip around the shop and across the street due to such a small pinion. I went from the 9 tooth pinion up to a 24 tooth and it has much better speed and still plenty of torque.

I also got some time to start modding the PMD bumper I got this weekend with some of my leftover lenses from Lynn and here is what I came up with.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1395.jpg

Also as my other builds have shown I love lots of lights and I decided this truck just didn't have enough yet so I drilled some holes and I will be adding plenty of chicken lights along the front bumper when my led's come in to get this billboard lit up.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1396.jpg

Nothing like having 34 lights on a day cab lighting it up at night making itself well pronounced in the darkness. :D

I'll be spending quite a bit of time on the wiring this week and hopefully have it almost complete by the weekend if all goes well.

Thanks for looking and lemme know what you think of the new accessories so far.

truck looked great at the show just too bad it kept blowing the yokes out, sounds like you have gotten that figured out though, it could sure do some pulling with that live front axle...

Re: Clifford The Work Horse

Well it's time for an update to Clifford the big red truck, or as fitting as it was last night "Clifenstien" as the girlfriend called it.

I finally got my mfu in and got everything crammed into the truck so I decided tonight now that it is programmed I would get some new pictures of how the truck looks.

Most of the guys that saw it at the St. Louis show remember how slow it ran around the shop but boy howdy did it have plenty of torque. Well I decided to fix that problem a little bit and install a bigger pinion while I was at it. Got all the drive line back together and made some new brackets under the hood, removed the interior and away I went with the new mfu. Now being a day cab this was quite tricky but I found a few good hiding spots for the electronics and all was able to fit inside of the truck without overflowing outside of the cab. All I have left to do now is mount the new micro esc for the low boy under the decking and run a power plug then I will be set to start pulling the trailer and tractor around.

Well anyways enough with the talking and here are some new pics of the truck.

Hope you guys like the new look in version two. :D

Started stripping down the frame to get a few things out of the way then added the new fuel tanks and the mfu control panel.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1441.jpg

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1447.jpg

Then it began the "Cliffenstein" look.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1455.jpg

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1456.jpg

Several hours later we are back together and sitting lower as the front suspension was modified once again for a better stance than before.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1457.jpg

And here are some pics from tonight with the trailer on behind the truck and the lights on in stages from parking lamps, headlights and finally everything on with the driving lights.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1461.jpg

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1462.jpg

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1463.jpg

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1464.jpg

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1467.jpg

And lastly a side shot showing no more lift axle at the moment and the profile of the truck.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1468.jpg

I hope you guys like the second version so far and I hope to have the trailer working by the end of next week so I can start laying the decking and get it ready for the tractor before long. I also plan on getting an ss-tronix wireless lighting kit for the trailer as well so all I have to do is hook up and go and everything will be hands free. That is all in good hopes and down the road a ways though.

Thanks for looking and lemme know what you guys think. :D

very nice job on fitting the mfu!! i also like the tandem axle look alot better. can i see a close up on how you fitted your lights in your front bumper. i have lights comming for my trailer and dont know how to secure them in the holes! you should use vht window spray tint on your windows to hide the wires better. either its sweet that a mfu is in a daycab. i want i want i want

Looking pretty good Tyler and much better without the pusher.

Ya know, with such a whirlwind of activity at St Louis to move all that dirt in virtually one day, there's alot of things we forgot to do! ...or maybe I missed it b/c I was lost in my own lil world of running my track hoe non stop.

Did Izzy ever bring his sled?

I do recall Izzy trying to pull three loaded bellydumps with his IH COE. Izzy's quad axle lead, Nathan's triple axle lead and either/or's tandem axle pup and the IH didn't have the traction to pull it... that would have been a reasonably good measuring ruler to pit one workhorse against another for a bit of spirited competition, eh? :D

Maybe next time... ;)

Re: Clifford The Work Horse

Thanks for all the compliments guys. I believe now that I have the extra battery stashed in the rear frame rails along with the new esc for the trailer neck I about to consider this project done for a while. I really wanna keep going with it but it's time to enjoy running it for a bit.

Travis, you were right after I looked at the truck for an hour or two and figured out the brackets to mount everything fitting the mfu in it wasn't too bad at all. The biggest hassle was tracing all the wires through the truck and keeping everything neat and tidy.

As for the show Joe, you didn't miss the sled, I don't think it got brought out but it sure would have been a great idea on the dirt road seeing who could pull it all the way. Maybe something like that for next years show.

I will post some pics later of the new electronics stashed in the frame once I get things tidy'd up a bit more then off to pulling a few more wires and having the neck lock done and fully operational. :D

Thanks again for all the compliments guys and hope to have pics and possibly a video up soon.

Re: Clifford The Work Horse

Well I just couldn't leave well enough alone this evening and got to working on the truck and changing a few things that bugged me and got a few things finished up. I started by getting rid of the ugly dirty white mud flaps in the back and making my own set out of some material I found at the local hobby lobby saturday and also mounted my power plug for the trailer neck so I decided to take a quick video for you guys to see how it works.

Here are some side by side shots for comparison on the flaps and some of what it looks like now that the new black ones are on. I like them so much better than the white ones.
I went a little longer too so I don't have to worry about kicking anything up at the trailers and equipment. :D

I'm also still debating stretching the frame a little more but I'm not sure if it will look right. I'm thinking maybe 1.5" to 2" so I can fit a tool box on the side or maybe a locker box of some sort. What do you guys think would look best?

Thanks Aaron, I'm thinking for now the truck is staying the same length till I get everything worked out of it and setup how I want. I may add an inch to it so I can squeeze a few more things in the frame that are going to be in version #3 but that will be after the show I have to have the truck at on the 17th of this month for the local truck guys to gander at.

Although I can't wait to rebuild it all and clean everything up and get everything functioning. :D

Well I got the trailer wired up and functioning tonight and took a video of my first attempt of unhooking and hooking back up to the trailer while loaded. Now don't make fun my sad attempt but I think it'll do better when its not stuck in the carpet. I kinda had to cheat a bit when it got stuck but all is good now. Anyways heres the video and a pic of the full setup loaded on the trailer behind the truck. Hope you enjoy. :D

Re: Clifford The Work Horse

Well its time to give Clifford a few more goodies for winter time. Early Christmas presents for the truck. I decided to add a deer catcher to the front since were into rutting season now and night driving is becoming more common and also got the air breathers on for winter so he can have a good breath of fresh air. I got some air cleaners from Steve back at the St. Louis show and finally got around to getting them on the truck and it looks much better now.

Here are a couple of new pics of how the front end of Clifford looks as of this evening.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1720.jpg

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...d/IMG_1719.jpg

Now wont be long before the first snow falls hopefully and I can get this truck out and see how the all wheel drive works. Thinking about possibly adding chains to it for winter but we will see how it goes at first.

Thanks for looking guys,

Thanks for the compliment Paul. I couldn't find a real good way to hide it so I just incorporated it all into the plate and whenever I have another trailer attached I can use it for screw drives as well since it's hooked directly up to the speed controller located in the drivers side fuel tank.

I'm with Paul. The Deans connector looks nicely done. How did you secure to the plate? I've been racking my head trying to come up with a clean way to that. Other then using non-Deans type connectors, I really wasn't sure.

Re: Clifford The Work Horse

The same problems come up with 1:1's too. One way to fix it is too put a 4x4 between the neck and the truck frame when unhooking. The other way is to have a push-off to lift the neck up off the truck frame. You can see the push-off in pics 2 and 3. Hope this helps.

Re: Clifford The Work Horse

Put a screw on each side under the neck and slide some tubing over them to the right hight so when you lower the neck it'll sit on them and that should do the trick. Or use a mini servo and a block with a groove to sit between the rails and on top of them locking the neck straight for an easier re attatchment to the trailer. just an idea

Re: Clifford The Work Horse

Well it's been a while since I've done anything to the truck other than running it every now and then just for the heck of it so I decided to take a little break from the loader and jump back over to the truck and trailer for a while.

I had started on my dump trailer back in December and got the frame mocked up for starters and that was it. I decided tonight to take and clean off the work bench and start on it again so here is a progress shot. I have the screw drive installed in the back of the trailer over the rear axle area and have the sides cut to the correct contour. I also got all the suspension done and the support legs installed and working as well. Here is my one and only teaser shot of the trailer for tonight as I hope to have some movement of the upper frame assembly tomorrow. ;)

Thanks for looking guys and hope to have some more updates for everyone throughout the week.
