Hoarder Special!
OK guys, over the last few months I have been slowly collecting(hoarding) enough parts to build another Tamiya chassis(or two:D). Some of the parts I have purchased second hand or traded for, and some have been given to me by fellow members(THANK YOU!). I assembled said parts a while back but really hadn't decided what I wanted to build until yesterday. Anyhow, I am going to try my luck at building another Canadian Kenworth. This one will be the late 50's early 60's vintage similar to a 925 but most likely with the heavy duty flat top steal fenders because it is modeled after the off highway versions. As per my usual the body will be all hand fabricated and TIG welded aluminum. Here's what I accomplished this afternoon/evening(not much lol).

Re: Hoarder Special!
My guess on how it will turn out::jaw:
Looking forward to follow the build. |
Re: Hoarder Special!
My guess it will be another stunning build . I also see more roads coming or a traffic jam . Mike

Reg-
This is AWESOME! Keep us All updated as you go along. I'm interested in this one. It would look great pulling DieselKids round dump in the background. Terry |
Re: Hoarder Special!
That is sick Reg! Can't wait to see more. How do you cut the windows out so neatly? Keep it up.

Re: Hoarder Special!
Awesome work as usual Reg!

Re: Hoarder Special!
Thanks very much guys. I haven't decided what type of fenders and hood to make. I will have to think about it a little more before I make more progress.

Re: Hoarder Special!
Another great build reg! I'll be watching. I would definitely try the bee's wax, Travis got me on it after I was ready to throw one of my saws out because it wouldn't cut aluminum worth a crap, now it works great!

Re: Hoarder Special!
That's a great idea guys, thanks:). I use reagent alcohol for machining, threading and occasionally for cutting but it washes off ink and I am only tracing the window openings on with a Sharpie. No ink, no idea where to cut!lol It will be interesting to see if bee's wax contaminates the welds or if it burns off:confused:. That is one thing very nice about using alcohol. It just evaporates in no time at all and leaves no residue. When I use grease I have to wash the parts before welding. I guess there is the perfect lube for every sticky situation...

Re: Hoarder Special!
Well I played hooky from customer jobs today and took a shop day for myself. I have been wanting to work on Scrappy( my nickname for this truck since it's chassis is a pile of hoarded spare parts) for a few days but just haven't had the time. I figured today was Sunday and my shop is my church so here's what I got into.
I started out by making a front bumper and mount. http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psz16tqzju.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psox0hoodz.jpg The front of the cab was too wide and the space between the windows too large. I hummed and hawed about cutting the cab or living with it but in the end sad the "F" word followed by "it" and chucked it in the saw. I split it down the middle and carefully removed about 1/8". http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psx71vus9m.jpg I then stitched it back up. http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4welnyem.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8drmdpbw.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psw5wymv5w.jpg Once I was happy enough with that I got back on with what I had intended to accomplish which was welding up the bumper and fenders. Here's one fender welded up and the other still in pieces. http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps09xataph.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pszwiqajex.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0tzsji0u.jpg This took some time and patience but they turned out OK. http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psozajpwsm.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pscq8bjmnj.jpg Once they were welded up I could figure out roughly where they needed to be placed. I made some adjustments and welded on the mounts. It's starting to look like a truck now!:D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w2C7EG1iRY http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pssercxj9a.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...ps39cbvl2m.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pssh9ktifu.jpg |
Re: Hoarder Special!
Absolutely mad skills you have with that welder! I'm intrigued with that motor/gearbox setup - any more pictures of that small conversion?

Re: Hoarder Special!
Thanks. The roof was/is a little tricky and I'm not sure I have enough "dome" in it but it will do. I don't know who did the trans for sure(Heavy Duty maybe) as I got it in a trade. It has the motor swapped on backwards with a small reduction added using a jack-shaft. After some careful filing of the mounts it runs smooth and has reasonable speed using a 55 turn motor. It would be nice if it were slower but it seems to run about the same speed as my KH using a stock trans and 85 turn motor only it has a lot of power. The KH with 85T is horribly gutless.

Re: Hoarder Special!
i swapped out my rc4wd 80t for a 65t for that reason no power
i wish i could work metal like you do reg!!!! |
Re: Hoarder Special!
I've been going crazy in my shop the last week or two. Lots on the ta-do list and I'm feeling it:D:cool:. I don't really know why it happens but when it does I get excited and have a hard time stepping out of the shop. My blood pressure also goes through the roof and I forget to sleep.LOL Anyway, in between working on several customer projects and a spec build(pup trailer) I have been adding some details to "Scrappy". I think the cab is ready for some primer now but it will stay like this until the whole truck is finished. I like to look at them in all their "aluminum glory" before I cover up my handy work with paint... I know, I'm weird. I live with it...

Re: Hoarder Special!
I'm new to RC construction and found your YouTube site and enjoy your postings. You are a true craftsman and an artist. If it doesn't give away to many secrets, what is your welding setup? I am in awe of your work.
|
Re: Hoarder Special!
Thanks very much guys. I'm happy to share what little knowledge I have. I am afraid I am no expert and just learn as I go so my knowledge is limited. My welding setup is no secret either, it's just a Lincoln Precision 225 TIG. It came with a lame instructional video and boat load of patience.:D

Re: Hoarder Special!
I noticed the ribs on the doors, it looks like you soldered them on, or did you shape them with a bead roller? Either way they turned out great.

I'll keep looking. You do massage the metal very well.

Re: Hoarder Special!
A small update. I spent the latter part of the afternoon and evening machining the rad and then bending up the hood. The hood still needs work but I had already been in the shop for too long and was hungry.lol
The rad started out as a piece of 4"x1/2". http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psgiclwijn.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psd70mkzuf.jpg You might be wondering why I machined out so much of the core area but left some.... The answer is.... http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pslxacfznl.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psteqovlvy.jpg Then the hood http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psx5utsrvs.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psmtqsv4xe.jpg Looking more like a truck now!:D |
Re: Hoarder Special!
Absolutely beautiful work! Hard to believe you just start out with a sketch on a piece of paper! Love the little details you've already put in place.
Respect! Stephan |

Here's a little update from today. Not much really but I did receive some stuff from the UPS man today. Most of the package was not for me but I did buy myself a new set of tires for the truck(Thanks Alex:cool:). It amazes me how much the look changes with just a more scale looking set of tires. I also locked both axles today before putting on the new tires. http://youtu.be/ri5SAp7TBb8 Some inside/outside shots http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psjux3shog.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psemxfe1vo.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psgqon03js.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pslq4sin4n.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psybbznvcf.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...psnpoybz8v.jpg http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/...pscyumeodx.jpg |
