Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Hello,
I'am building a Kenworth T950 for severall years now. The scale is 1:12. First it was a truck with a real engine, but there where to many problems. I build a electic motor in it. Now I can drive annywhere. http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...3-p1010121.jpg This my truck. http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...4-p1010086.jpg http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...5-p1010083.jpg Ok, there is more to tel. I get other tayers. I'am building a new gearbox, and more. Thats the problem with me, everytime there is something new to change I build it and it has to work. greatings, Erik |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Nice looking rig!! Did you scratchbuild the entire truck or just some of the parts?
Lynn |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hey Lynn,
Yes I scratchbuild the most parts off the truck. The wheels ,the motor and the electonica I didn't build'. And some smal parts. Erik |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Hello,
I did order new tayers, but the are not the right. I have to make them smaller. http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...an-de-velg.jpg I cut them in half, and removed the middel part. Put it back toughter again. http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...tussen-uit.jpg The two size of tayers http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...llere-band.jpg It was a lot of work to do 8 tayers. http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...re- banden.jpg Erik |

Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hello,
It is a little bit late, but everybody a Happy New Year. I don't no if there are people on this forum living in Queensland the floating is here also on the news. To all there ,be strong. Here in Holland we now what water kan do. I build a new gearbox, because the old one I had made from a Accudrill machine. It was slower than a turtle. http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...0-p1000491.jpg http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...ellingsbak.jpg This is the old one. It has a reverse in it, because the truck had first a real engine. Now I got a electric engine so the reverse is not needed anymore. the old one had two gears. slow and very, very slow. the new gearbox has four gears. Now I got even a race mode. To operate the gearbox you need two servos. http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...snellingen.jpg http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...van-de-bak.jpg To shift gears you move a wheel (I don't now the real word for it) over the axe http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...-geschoven.jpg http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...7-p1010004.jpg So far so good. The gearbox fits into the chassis. Now I have to build the electric engine into it. Erik |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Erik very nice work on the gear box. You did a fine job on the tires to another person with a lot of patients some thing I am lacking. Ed

Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Great transmision work :D Twin stick's:p Been there done that:eek:
Later, Neil#2 aka doodlebug. |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Wow. What sort of engine did the truck have before? Or what size? Something like a nitro 2 stroke, used for an RC off road buggy? I'd have to approve of your changing that out for an electric drivetrain. You get a lot better performance and smoother control that way.
|
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Hoi, Espeefan,
You got that right. It was a two stoke nitro engine 6,5 cc. It was not only the better performance, but also the hot oil from the engine burned into the paint. The only thing thats missing now is diesel smoke. http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...ings-motor.jpg The sound off a 2 stroke engine is not a good sound for a truck. I have now a " sound generator" from servonaut that is a real truck sound. It's great. Another reason for putting a electric engine in the truck is that I now can drive in the house. No more tools for getting the engine startted only a battery. |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hello,
I'am trying to get more details working. One off them are the windscreen wipers. The problem is the narrow space. Al the moving parts have to fit in the dashbord. Annother problem is that each wiper is moving in the opposite site. I did try to make a drawing in window paint, so here he is. http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...itenwisser.jpg To find a motor was not difficult. I use a mini-servo for it. So I get to work. according the drawing. Ha ha ha. It's working, not verry fast, but still. All so it dosn't go the hole way. Only a half windscreen. This is the problem off a little space http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...t-t950-063.jpg http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...t-t950-066.jpg http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...t-t950-070.jpg It is nice to have more optoins on the truck than only driving. I'am also trying to get the search lamp working. Erik |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
that is sickkkK!!! nitro powered too? wow

Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hello,
Can somebody tell what the name is off this "thing" http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...t-t950-089.jpg Now the truck is getting finshed. The trailers are the next project. The first trailer is all most ready, but i got some guestions. How much cow's are going in one trailer? How they the cow's on the second deck? http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...t-t950-038.jpg |

Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hello,
I'am building the 2 and 3 trailer from wood. The dolly I make from aluminium. The "bridges" , I don't the real name , between the trailers. They have to work. I use old servo's with a spindle to open and close the "bridge". The problem is to let the different parts open and close in the correct seguence. It start to open with the first part the floor after that the two sides. But to close it, it has to start with the two sides. Also a problem is that the floors off two trailers overlap each other, so they cann't start equal. I do think some electronic will do the yob. |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hello,
I've build music in the truck. it sounds verry nice. question is there in Australia specail truckers music? or is there a truckers radio? erik |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Amazing scratch building going on here! Please keep us posted as you continue this superb build..
|
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
great build! any videos of the truck running?
|
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hello,
I got no video's jet. here a view pic's from the truck with two trailers. http://www.modelbouwforum.nl/forums/...e-oplegger.jpg I'am not only bilding the trailers, but the insite off the truck has also a new interior. here also some pic's The steering wheel and some details are not ready jet but when they are I wil post some more pictures. The gear shift is working, when the truck put in gear. the lights in the dash are working. And i put a working key in the dash. When I put the key in the lock the receiver is on. |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
very cool!!! nice attention to detail too.
great work |

Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hello,
here annother update. Livestock is a problem. I got already a cow and a bull, but they don't like each other. (sh.........).Hahahaa. The reason for having no videos is that the driving off the truck is not without problems. Only one driven rear axles is the problem and the both axles have separate springs. So when the second axles is standing something higher, the first will lift from the ground. Also the driven axle is a rigid axle. To solve this problem I bought two rear axles from Tamiya. they do not fit on the the truck. So I have to make some parts to let it fit. First I had to made new springs. And the axles I have to adjust. So far so good. Now it has to fit. |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Hi Erik,
Does the axles fit now? Your kenny is a beautifull project keep up the good mood you will fix it. When can we see the driven at the modelclub? Kind regards ,Norbert |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
great idea on the tamiya axles. did you get it figured out?
|
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Great build! Love the trailers and interiors details, lot of work there
Congrats! |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Hello,
Here a update. First, thanks for the compliments. It did take some time before I got back to build of the project. It was verry busy at work. YES i did it. And it fits. I had to build some more parts to get the axles even. Then I put it under the chassis. Some adjustments I made and YES it does fit.:) Now I have to build the shaft from the gear box to the axles. Erik |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Great idea i kinda like the idea of adjustable linkages!!
|
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Hello,
Here a picture with the paint on it I made also the two shafts and it works. I do make it al by hand. So things like the shafts are a little problem. But when it does work it is great. To rebuild the rear axes the rear bumper has to come off. Now it is the time to build a new bumper. I did build it from wood. this is the new bumper. I did have some time. So the steering axel did have a smal servo. The servo was not strong. I build a big one in it. Now it the wheels move in both directions when the truck is standing stil. I do hope that the truck is steering well when it drives in reverse. this are the things I did the last weeks. greats Erik |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hello,
The problem is how to extend the axes. Now I do need some help, because I don't have a "Lathe". So I got help, and in a evening I had the parts I needed. So here the the build. Before I start with the axes I had to put the rear bumper on and connect the lights. First the extensions on the Tamiya axes. It is always nice work when it fits. In the extension I put a 4mm bolt. The bolt is so long that second wheel wil fit on to. Now I put the first wheels on and put a screw-not before it, so the wheel is stuck to the extension. This is inportant because I have now a connection between the axes and the wheels. After the first now it is time to put the second wheel on and the rest off the fenders. This is the result from the update rear axes , fender and bumper I do hope that the truck is driving much better with this update. We will see Erik |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hello,
Here a litle update. The truck is driving great with the new axles. I'am hope to make a movie from it, with some help. The last time I was busy with making transport boxes for the roadtrain. I don't now if it is common for you all to build these boxes, but in our country it is normal. I visit somethimes other events in the country. To get the trucks safe in and out off the car, is already a challenge. And the drive to the events brings also some damage to the trucks. Thats why I build boxes. Here a picturefrom the boxes. |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hello,
Just another update. The colors off the trailers where not great. They where a little bit dusty. So here the new color. http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-C4CGSZSK.jpg I'am also busy with the " bridges" . I used old servo's and removed the electronics, so they are used as a motor with a spindel. this is working perfect. My first thought was to let the "bridges"work with electronics. This is not for me, I do not get it. But i got a solution. I build a cylinder with a time frame on it. The cylinder let the servo's work. With limit switches on the servo's to control the max limit. I do hope jou can follow me.Here some pic's http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-CXLXKRGG.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-SUUXXSF3.jpg I can put the hole thing in reverce and it is so that the last thing that is opend is the first to close. http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-SUUXXSF3.jpg untill next time greet Erik |
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
Awesome truck mate!
|
Re: Kenworth T950 Roadtrain
hoi,
Yes a update. I saw on youtube that the cows are loaded at the front off the first trailer. So I had to rebuild the first trailer. And also connect the servo's to the cylinder. http://www.mijnalbum.nl/MiniFoto-LZ7FK4MC.jpg To get the doors open and the "bridges'" down I build this construction with the servo's [IMG]http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-ONCLZ7MD.jpg[/IMG here some pics off all the electric's in the first trailer http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-4E37RCCK.jpg http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-VGMBEQLF.jpg The cylinder with time frame is working perfect. Also the servo's. to let this two work is a lot off wires required. This takes some time, and a headache. erik |
