W900 Studio Sleeper Project
5 Attachment(s)
It been a while since my last Aerodyne project, but this is the build I always really wanted to do. So far she's just a rolling, but this is how I planned it as I wanted to focus on the body and interior. Installed clear styrene for the windshield and windows and some more filler work needed to get the window trims right. Stay tuned....

Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
I like it a lot. How long are the frame rails on this build?
|
Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
What are you using to lower/raise the drop axles? Do you have pics of the underside of the lift axles? How are you keeping them straight while driving, & turned while turning? These are all questions I have, as I've yet to sort how I shall make all those functions properly work when I build the 7 axle SUPERdump I intend to build in the near future.

Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
Wow that's a lot of axles :jaw:

Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
Your going to have to get the grill as smooth as possible
But when you do. Use this for the paint Molotow Liquid Chrome 1mm Mirror Effect Pump Marker Drain the paint and airbrush it on |
Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
question to Bigford about airbrushing the Molotow Liquid Chrome Marker. Is a basecoat needed to get the full mirror effect on the styrene?
Thank you. |
Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
Thanks Bigford, I'll try that out. I was actually going to use Dupli color Chrome using gloss black as the base, but I'll go with your suggestion instead.

Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
Nice build !
I've also been recommended to use alclad products for the chrome effect (and this includes a black coat as primer) but never tried. Really interested to see how this will turn out ! I found this nice tutorial : Chroming with Alclad |
Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
I use Alclad II lacquers fairly frequently. They work well if you take your time and really prep the surface. Sand through at least 2000 grit, even finer if you can. Make sure surface is clean. Use the Alclad gloss black base for a chrome finish. I've been told you can use any gloss black but have always had the best finish using the Alclad. Very important to follow air pressure setting instructions on bottle for your airbrush. Mix paint in bottle very thoroughly before using. I use a battery powered mixer. Don't wait before spraying as the metal particles in the paint will start to settle out quickly. Very light, almost dusting coats. The Alclad will dry almost instantly but wait about 20 to 30 seconds between each coat and then gently buff with very soft cloth or tissue before applying the next coat. I usually wait about 24 hours between base coat and finish chrome coats. Alclad also now has a material called Aqua Gloss Clear ALC600 that can be used as a protective overcoat. It is, in my opinion, better than the modler's old standby; Future Floor Finish. Also you will want to use the Alclad airbrush cleaner. I use this on my airbrushes even if I've only been spraying acrylics, best cleaner I know of.

Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
I've purchased a can of Alclad Chrome a few years ago but never used it as it dried up. I'm gonna practice on some leftover styrene for good measure. I really appreciate the input on this guys.... Thanks!! I really want this KW to come out right. I've been in this hobby for twenty one years and this build by far has me shooting for a 1 to 1 comparison to the real W900.
|
Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
I should probably also mention that with the Alclad you will not get the real bright and shiny chrome finish that looks like the chrome plating on plastic models. To my eye I think it looks much more realistic and with proper surface finish before painting is very nice. I definitely recommend some practice before trying on real parts. But if you goof it can be removed for a do-over with the cleaner.

Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
Progress on project W900 SS is moving along. Tried the Alclad and not happy with the grill so ordered the Molotow Liquid Chrome. Still have to finish the wiring for the lighting and interior. More to come.

Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
Looks good. What you need to try is alsa easy chrome. Very expensive. $250 australian for about 250 mls. Spray the item a gloss black 1st and then spray chrome on top. It can be put in a spray can. One of my friends used this on a pair of fibreglass bumpers on a car he rebuild. Said the 250ml can was enough for both!

Re: W900 Studio Sleeper Project
I know what I would do .. Take a picture like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Chrome-Kenw...-/141163539436 with the exact measurements of your grill to a graphics shop and have them cut it in chrome vinyl . I love the W900 with studio sleeper that your doing and it's got me thinking of doing one . Luckily for me I can cut that grill decal at home .
