Euclid R18
2 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, I'm new to the site and I guess scratch building RC's as well. I haven't been involved with RC cars for about twenty years but when my father-inlaw got a cheap helicopter for xmas I found myself buying one too the next day! To say the least I am hooked again and after scratch building a scale commercial fishboat in january I started surfing youtube for RC videos. Being interested in logging equipment I did a search for RC stuff and found tracksntreadslou's videos first with the P16. My Dad picked up an old 1961 Euclid in the late 80's (an ex Butler Bro's truck) for use on our property and it's still kickin around so I thought it was a good place to start. My skills are not on the same level as most of you on this forum but I think it's a hobby and as long as your having fun thats all that matters! It has a long way to go but it's getting there.

Re: Euclid R18
Welcome Reg. That Euc looks good from my house :)

Re: Euclid R18
Wow that looks great. I think you are selling your skills way to short.
|
Re: Euclid R18
Nothing short of great skills, dumper looks fabulous.
|
Re: Euclid R18
Hi Reg welcome to the forum...great job on the euc..Pretty much nailed it ..I have a feeling i am going to be loading that brute one day soon..What part of the island are you from ?
|
Re: Euclid R18
Wow I like that truck,or any Euclid truck 40's-50's vintage. I was thinking about one of these too in the future. A couple guys bring old R10's to our antique digging show to haul dirt. Fun little truck to drive.
|
Re: Euclid R18
nice job on that truck i am also partial to the green stuff lol

Thanks for the comments guys. I don't know how many of you have seen or driven one of these trucks but they are pretty crude so it makes for a little bit easier build. I hope to finish the box and some other details soon so that I can paint all of it but it's been running for a while so some of my build time has turned into play time. My Dad has a 955K and I'm hoping to try my luck at that after the truck is finished but I will need some advice when it comes to the guts of that project(drives and hydros).
Lou, I hope to have you load it this summer at the truck show in Port. Oh ya I'm from Sooke. A few more build pics. |
Re: Euclid R18
It never fails to amaze me that the guys who are the most modest about their skills, build the best looking models! From where I am standing, this is nothing short of amazing. You have an incredible looking model on your hands. You should be proud. Good work.

Re: Euclid R18
Reg. Welcome to the forum. Another guy from the island. I was going to say if it was a Butler truck you might be from out Sydney way. The Euclid is a beauty and looks to be a fair size from the pictures. What scale is it. Looking forward to see it in person.
Rob |
Re: Euclid R18
I'm not sure what the scale would be exactly but the real truck is about 25' long and the "mini me" version is about 27". I think it would be around 1/10+or-?

Re: Euclid R18
Once again Vancouver Island strikes with another accomplished model builder and a great model. Welcome!, looking forward to your model building adventures. Like I said before.. it must be the water out there on the Island. Fred

Re: Euclid R18
 No skills:eek: You have to be joking! To scratch build a vehicle out of metal puts you in a class by yourself. Take a good look at most of the vehicles on this forum and you will see very few all metal vehicles. Most are made from plastic with the exception of the construction equipment. Your truck is right up there with some of the best. How many guys make there own driveshafts and axles? Very, very few!!
|
Re: Euclid R18
yay!!!!!!!!!!another 1/10th builder lol sorry guys theats just the scale i build in to me it is so much easyer more room and wow on your model skills you have me beat i haven't tried to make my own diffs or drive shafts yet i am bad about lookin around to see what will fit but yea that is one awsome built truck and it is scaled to my dozer nice work

Re: Euclid R18
Welcome and there is no need to be shy about your building skills - they are fine! Always good to see different brands and eras represented. Nice work and keep it coming.

Re: Euclid R18
Wow! If this is your first scratch built model, what is still to come!
Keep going! Looks great! Kerst |
Re: Euclid R18

That diff and drive shaft created some sleepless nights for me! I ended up using a cast aluminum ring and pinion from an old Diawa fishing reel that I had since I was a kid(I'm a self confessed hoarder). The drive shaft is not perfectly straight but at the speed it turns you hardly notice. The only problem with my setup is the fact that it's a solid axle so my turning radius kinda sucks. I enjoy welding and fabricating stuff so as long as I build something different everytime I'm having fun. I'll post some pics of my first scratch build later(the fishboat).
Thanks again for all the positive feedback, it's very motivating! Here's a pic of the real truck. Reg |

Re: Euclid R18
That just looks like a boat that's tied up in the harbour here in Comox. Are you sure you didn't take that picture here. Yours sure is a fine looking model.

A few more pics. This is a lot of key lime! Lots of details left to do but it's almost ready to drive!
|
Re: Euclid R18
Reg. Wow!!! It's amazing what a little paint will do. Can't wait to see it finished and hauling dirt.
Rob |
Re: Euclid R18
Wow great job on the build, it looks Awesome. There is at least one truck like your model still intact in the valley but it has been moved from the boneyard recently (hopefully for restoration) .
You have to come up to Port Alberni for the Antique truck show at our McLeans mill historic site this summer. There is starting to be a large group of builders coming together on the Island here and we could put on an impressive display of iron:) |
Re: Euclid R18
I'm hoping that I can join you guys at the truck show for sure! I'm wondering, how high will your guy's machines lift for loading my truck since it's a larger scale? I'd like to think I'll have another machine built myself by summer but sometimes work gets in the way of all this fun stuff...
When is the show in Port this year? |
Re: Euclid R18
I can load to about 48'' high:D That's really coming along nicely. I would love to have a Euclid truck of the same vintage of my dragline.
|
Re: Euclid R18
48" should do it! My truck is not all that high, about 11" to the top side of the box rail. Installed the front windows today and put the first coat of green on the box. Truck is up and running(boxless) again so I'm stoked!
|
Re: Euclid R18
Looks good Reg . We get you down here for cabin fever expo , we'll keep Steve's drag line busy . My mack is about that high .
IHSteve |
Re: Euclid R18
11" shouldn't be a problem for most of the machinery around here. If it is we can always build up a dirt ramp to elevate the machines for loading.
I think the show is in september. |
Re: Euclid R18
looks good in green glad to hear it is up and running we need video's
|
Re: Euclid R18
I've never posted any video's before so how do I????? Do you have to use Youtube and what video quality do you guys shoot the videos.
|
Re: Euclid R18
Machinist, What scale are the excavators that you guy's have.
|
Re: Euclid R18
Must be Green week! A cable dozer and now an early dump. Really like this truck - I've seen so many in the quarries and mines since I was a young'un that it's like old-home week. Keep up the great work!

MORE GREEN! I need to make new front rims because the tires don't fit snuggly enough for the weight of this thing! The 8.5 Ah lead battery is heavy! Time to make it look like a jimmy under that hood too!
