Kenworth Heavy Recovery Rotator

With a little push I decided to start this build today. It will be a twin steer tri drive 80 ton rotator with a Kenworth W9 cab. Here is a pic of the truck I am using as a reference but the cab will be different as well as the front axle spacing.

Re: Kenworth Heavy Recovery Rotator

Thanks for the complements they are appreciated. So far it is 35in and I am guessing it will be 37 when the front bumper and the stinger for the rear is added.

Kool Travis, its gonna need its own zip code to turn around in! :) I like those front wheels. Did you make them? They're nice.

Re: Kenworth Heavy Recovery Rotator

No Will they were made by one of our members (ihbuilder) who is also a vendor here. Here is a link to his thread about the wheels.

Thanks guys i had some help and motivation today, Izzy came over for the weekend and the other trucks are close to being ready for paint so we started on this one. I now need to get some smaller gear motors so i can build the screw drive rams and some winches.

Re: Kenworth Heavy Recovery Rotator

That is killer! I'm going to bring out my tamiya bullhead for you to tow with that monster!

Re: Kenworth Heavy Recovery Rotator

Incredible project! It's already looking good, but I know it will get better. What a monster. I hate to think of the money tied up in rims and tires alone, but it's labor of love, I guess, and a fun hobby.

Travis, that is going to be a really cool build. Here is a similar unit at Brandeis loading a 100 ton Komatsu haultruck main-chassis.

I can personally vouch that "00" had to dig out a 35' tape measure to lay it out. His 18" rule he normally uses just wouldn't do the job.

Re: Kenworth Heavy Recovery Rotator

Travis are you going to jump that wrecker when it is done at the Jersey show? I had a blast on Saturday pleasure meeting you. Tony

fhhhstix 06-12-2011 10:48 PM

Re: Kenworth Heavy Recovery Rotator

That would be a BIG NO on jumping the tow truck but the red truck is still ready for some more action. I had a great time at the show as well. I think you and Ben will fit in real good with this bunch of guys you two are top notch and built one heck of a nice truck, and I can't wait to see the trailer finished.

Re: Kenworth Heavy Recovery Rotator

Thanks Wade different pics are always welcome you never know when you might see something new that you like. I talked to Jimmy at the NJ show and mentioned I was building this and told him I was working off a pic of a Jardan and apparently he is not a fan of Jardan so I think I may be out of luck with him. I don't know which brands are better than the others in the 1:1's but I do like the look of the Jardan.

Re: Kenworth Heavy Recovery Rotator

The truck has been put on hold till I get some of my other projects done. I am also working on a truck for a friend of mine and his son. Hopefully I will get all of my stuff and the friends truck done for Indy and will have time for the tow truck after the show.
