First Globe and trailers
Hi everyone...just joined and thought I would start my own build thread.
This is my globeliner just painted TS-9 with a stock (for now) flatbed and the beginnings of a lowboy I started last winter. I'll add as time and $ allow;) Thanks for looking, Bill https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E...3uI/s800/4.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-e...AOI/s800/2.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-s...VQ8/s800/5.jpg |
Re: First Globe and trailers
from what i can see it looks good. welcome to the forum (im new as well) can we get some larger photos and maybe a closer on of the flatbed.
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
Now that is just sweet:cool::cool:
Nice work Bill |
Re: First Globe and trailers
Really nice - the stretch is just right for me.

Re: First Globe and trailers
Nice work Bill......I love the trailer, and the stretch looks perfect!
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
Very nice stretch and the lowboy looks good.:)
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
Made a couple of changes to the flatbed. I have ZERO experience w/ styrene but I have to say I really like fooling around with it:D.
Waiting on some lenses to finish the lighting and need to paint...now I think I want to stretch it. I'll post more when I am able, thanks for looking. Bill https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-4.../081411-02.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7.../081411-01.jpg |
Re: First Globe and trailers
Hi Bill welcome , youve got a good start there. that lowboy looks sweet , are you going to build something to fit on it ?
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
Great looking Globliner & Trailer!
|
Re: First Globe and trailers

|
Re: First Globe and trailers

bumper looks great!

Re: First Globe and trailers
here's some work I did on the lighting. got the controller from a guy in Canada. quite a bit of work to set up for the truck but a nice product nontheless. I control the marker lights on the trailer w/ their own power triggered by an aux output on the controller to a solid state relay in the trailer. want to add more lighting to the cab and do some tweeking w/ the brightness but this is a start.
btw, those who have asked for lowboy pictures, there's not much to show. In fact I'm kind of leaning toward scrapping the aluminum structure and going to mild steel...thats down the line, need a couple of tools first;) thanks for looking, Bill https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--...rucklights.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-b...ilerlights.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-g...rklightson.jpg |
Re: First Globe and trailers
Bill, the lighting on the Globe looks great.
If I may ask, why are you thinking about scrapping the lowboy? It is a really good looking trailer. Adding some decking and swimg arms will complete it. I for one would like to see it finished. Carl |
Re: First Globe and trailers
Carl,
The main rails of the trailer are 1" channel "ripped" to width on my table saw and the cut isn't as clean as I had hoped (even with a brand new $60 specialty blade for aluminum). The more I look at the trailer the more I don't like the scale of the aluminum channel, the wall seems very heavy. I do have tons of time drilling and tapping all the crossmembers so it is hard to throw that away, maybe I'll come up with an idea to salvage the project, I have no deadline, I just have to feel good about my quality and not feel like I'm accepting mediocrity. Here's a couple of pictures...thanks for looking. Bill https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-o...252520Copy.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-u...boyupclose.jpg |
Re: First Globe and trailers
Looks great to me Bill. Maybe as stated before, with decking and details you may have a different feel for it. On the other hand you know what you want it to be. Either way not for the scrap heap at all!
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
I understand what you are saying Bill. Sometimes scale will be sacrificed for strength. In your case, the strengh is there.
As for cleaning up the channel after cutting, I have found that running the rail through a thickness sander cleans and levels the rails in about four passes @ .020 per pass. Just need to leave extra material to be able to do this. I think that you can bevel the inside edge of the C-flange to reduce the extra thick flange appearence. Sometimes just rounding the exposed edges of the C channel wil improve the appearence. Hope this helps Carl |
Re: First Globe and trailers
For a 1st time scratchbuild, the trailer look fine. Just keep adding details and the decking with some paint and it will look great. Strength versus scale can be a tricky problem. For me on a trailer, I would go for strength as you never know what you might want to haul on it. Just ask Izzy when he put dirtpusher9's dozer on his lowboy. All 150# of it. Trailer came thru with flying colors but I am not sure about Izzy:rolleyes: He has been trying to get his IH to pull its front wheels off of the ground every since:eek:
Keep the updates and pics coming. Always nice to see someones dreams come to life.:D |
Re: First Globe and trailers
I like the trailer as it is. My trailer had long flanges and after a little while I forgot all about them and nobody said boo. But as you stated the build is yours - so it's your choice.
And dirt pushers was a heavy haul - fun though. Kept her in first the whole time! |
Re: First Globe and trailers
OK, so you've inspired me to continue down the path and see what results I can achieve. Maybe I'll even fool around with it a little today. Thanks for the compliments and encouragement.

Re: First Globe and trailers
That is great to hear Bill, looking foward to more Pic's.

Re: First Globe and trailers
So I guess I'm in the mood to "play with my toys" as the wife says. The last couple of days I made the ramps for the front and decked it. I also spent some time bending some aluminum to mimic the incline typically at the rear of the deck. I think it's a bit out of whack but I need to stare at it a while. Here's some pics of the progress...
Hears the front of the deck... https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-2...s800/ramps.jpg And the rear... https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-9...0/rearramp.jpg The trailer ready to move... https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-H...800/raised.jpg And lowered... https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-E...00/lowered.jpg Then detached... https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-O...0/detached.jpg The gooseneck is super rough...I hate looking at tose big bolt heads but theres not much else I can do. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Bill |
Re: First Globe and trailers
looking good, you will get it looking great!!
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
Hey it looks great! just refine your neck and you got it down for sure..NICE WORK..
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
I wish all of my projects worked as good as your lowboy :( I agree with TC. Just refine the goosneck, add some paint, and you will have a great looking and working lowboy :D
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
Bill I have to agree with the other guy's. You are almost there, keep up the good work,
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
Great first build. I like the new ramps
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
Great work looks great!
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
Thanks for all the kind words everybody.:)
Started to paint the other day, need a few more days before more pictures. Bill |
Re: First Globe and trailers
The trailer looks good with the thicker walls to me and if you're ever gonna be hauling anything heavy on it you will be much happier with the thick wall to support it.

Re: First Globe and trailers
That trailer looks awesome man, I'm glad u decided to continue with it. That's one heck of a first attempt.

Re: First Globe and trailers
I love what you've done on the lowboy, FANTASTIC!!!
And I love the color of the GL, green's my favorite color. I also love the stretch, look's just right. Keep on truckin' buddy. Big John |
Re: First Globe and trailers
Great work!! Now you have got it down this is going to be a great looking trailer..
|
Re: First Globe and trailers
I was wondering if you could tell me the dimensions of the rails you have running down the outer edge of the lowboy body? And where you bought them at? I've been trying to find a aluminum beam with a small lip like that forever.
