Smith 40
I have built a relative unknown crane. Scale 1:25. Completely RC.
The original crane was build by Thomas Smith & Sons (Rodley) Ltd. Crane and Excavator Works. This type of crane was very rare outside the UK. My former boss had three of them and all were placed on a barge. That's why I built the crane without the undercarriage. Maybe in the future I will build the barge too but for now I leave it as it is. The model. http://www.smith-cranes.nl/PhotoShar...sam2315mid.jpg http://www.smith-cranes.nl/PhotoShar...sam2306mid.jpg http://www.smith-cranes.nl/PhotoShar...sam2330mid.jpg Original with the barge. http://www.smith-cranes.nl/PhotoShar...baggerenro.jpg |
Re: Smith 40
Welcome to the forum. Very nice model crane. You should build a barge to mount it on. That would be so cool to do some scale model dredging. Can we see the inner works?
|
Re: Smith 40
xilence-I cannot see the pictures. What's going on here?
|
Re: Smith 40
Strange, I share them from my own website en it seems that '9W Monighan' can see them.
I really don't know what's going on. Otherwise I must them upload to imageshack, maybe that will help? |

I see red boxes too  Tom, if you right click on each red X, scroll down to properties, the url will appear to which you will copy & paste into another window to see each photo. (providing you're using Windows computer?) xilence, when you right click your photos on your website to see each pic's properties, does a different url appear? |
Re: Smith 40
Doesn't work for me-oh well!!
|
Re: Smith 40
I have just solved the problem (I hope)
|
Re: Smith 40
The pics work for me.
Nice Crane! got vids? |
Re: Smith 40
Very nice!

Re: Smith 40
Wow ,thanks for sharing, enjoyed the vid, looks like she works perfect, really like your workshop too :D

Re: Smith 40
Great looking crane! I'd be a little fearful of the barge over turning, with the crane being perched up on a pedistal like that, but I am sure it's safe. No one would ever do that if it wasn't. That is a beautiful model.

Re: Smith 40
Thank you guys for all your kind words.
@9W Monighan, the reason why I didn't built the barge are the measures of the model. The barge would be 5.3 ft long and 1.9 ft width. It's a little to big to put it somewhere in my house and where i can see him too. :D |

And a nice workshop you got there! Kerst |
Re: Smith 40
Good to have you here Adrie , Welcome
I have said it a few times before but it wouldn't harm to say it agian. Very very nice. Eef |
Re: Smith 40
Really nice model-I agree with 9W, It would be great to see it on a barge. We don't get to see that kind of equipment on this site.
|
Re: Smith 40
Wow, what a great model. Looks like another artist in the mix.
|
Re: Smith 40
Very nice! Always happy to see another cable machine on here. Do you have any pictures of the inner workings or under construction?
|
Re: Smith 40
Thank again for all the kind words towards my work.
In fact I have a website where I have a lot of photo's. Actually it's a forum where I can easily place comments for each of the pictures. It's not meant for discussions (Sorry guys, but the comments are in Dutch and I have a warning: Some of the pictures on page 2 has a very heavy load) The inner work is not so spectacular, it's very simple but it does were it was intended for. ;) Smith crane under construction @Espeefan, do you mean the real barge or if I place the model on the barge? |
Re: Smith 40
Very nice model! The brass work is superb. I agree a barge would make it look real but where would you keep it?
|
Re: Smith 40
After viewing the build pics from the site,WOW!! your build skills are awesome.Again, very nice build!!:D
|
Re: Smith 40
That build came out very professorial looking and right scale speed on it's operation. Do u have any plans to rc the skid steer under the crane?

I meant on the barge, for the real, 1:1 machine, but I suppose both model and real crane would not be much different! |
Re: Smith 40
@rcguyfarms, I don't have RC plans for the Skid steer, I would not even know where I should start. It's to little. :D
@Espeefan, It's safer than when the crane were mounted on his undercarriage. You don't even notice when you walked on deck and the crane had a full load. Unlike the floating crane which I now driven on, this one tipped much more with full load and still it's very safe. http://www.smith-cranes.nl/PhotoShar...marcor4flo.jpg By the way, it's my next project. Scale 1:75 |
Re: Smith 40
Supercool!
This looks so great and I had never seen this type of crane before! Congratulations! |
Re: Smith 40
What Espeefan said. Your boom is much like mine, except it's clean and straight.

We use them (we have two of this type of cranes) for load en unloading from sea going vessels. That could be all like Coal & Minerals, Agriculture, scrap, ect. In fact all dry bulk cargo.
Capacity is 36 tons from 13 meter to 43 meter (42 to 141 feet) The 'red box' is indeed the operators cab, it's about 39m (127 feet) above deck. Loading scrap. |
Re: Smith 40
Wow, that must be an interesting sensation, having the cab move with the boom + being on water! Cheer's, Neil.

The crane works fully RC. Now I'm going to build the barge. http://www3.picturepush.com/photo/a/...5700-groot.jpg http://www3.picturepush.com/photo/a/...0091-groot.jpg |
Re: Smith 40
That is a marvelous piece of modelling! Without the wall behind it, you'd think it was the 1:1. Our company has put a few pedestal hydraulic clams on barges on the Ohio River, but nothing that is close in size to this unit. Would like to see a video of it in operation.
Great job! Ken |
Re: Smith 40
Thank you, I appreciate your kind words.
A link to a video of the 'Marcor 4' at the Port of Rotterdam. (Netherlands) It's not so spectacular, at that time they working on a separation between two kinds of type of minerals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIFap5bbz1g&noredirect=1 |
Re: Smith 40
Woah your brass work is amazing, and you have a great eye for detail. I am curious though, how is the drive line for the drums set up and how are they powered? I'm building a yarder with lots of cables and rigging and will need some help figuring everything out haha. Thanks
