Oilfield King Hauler
Well, decided to try and build a oilfield rig, always liked the oilfield trucks, see them all the time in my line of work.
Going to try and shoot for a flatbed look with a rolling tailboard, and a headache rack with a winch. Just getting started ,have a long way to go on this build. I rough cut the 16 gauge out for the fifth wheel with the plasma cutter, then did the final straight cuts with the dremel with a cut off wheel. Going to try and build the bed like this rig,pic to follow. http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/142/oilfield202.jpg http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/43/photovso.jpg http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/8610/king1l.jpg http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/2707/king2k.jpg http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/3452/king3r.jpg http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/613/king5f.jpg |
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
That's going to look cool! Did you weld the pieces together?
|
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
A great start to a unique style of truck Tommy.
Gonna use a wdc winch and add gin poles? |
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Nice! i think I would stretch it out a bit. Add lots of chains, cables and binders.

Re: Oilfield King Hauler
I too think it would look nice stretched a bit but it look just as nice the way you are going with it, can't wait to see how you replicate the winch and frame will be nice when finished... Keep the update pictures coming.

@ dabears
Hey thanks ,i've always thought the oilfield trucks were cool ,hope I can do it justice. I cut the metal about halfway through at the rear of the bed, then bent down to the angle i needed ,then spot welded just for now, still have quite a bit of metal fabbing to do. @ Joe Hey Joe ,thanks man. Thought about using a winch from rc4wd ,shows to be on back order though, will be a while before I need it ,may look around some more for one.. I have thought about gin poles, may leave those out . @ Claus Thanks for the pic, cool rig ,well ,have already cut the frame to shorten a little,The way I do my metal work is a little slow, with the tools I have . Will probably leave it the lenght it is now. @ Dairyland trucker Thanks ,yea looking foward to getting to the headache rack .Have a few ideas for it,have a ways to go on it. |
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Well, a little progress on the oilfield rig.
Got the sides cut out and tacked on ,got the rear section drop down recess plated in,picked up some 1/4 keystock at a local industrial supply store, got the winch in ,now to get cracking on the headache rack. Just getting everything tack together ,then weld it out. Couple more pics http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/319/king8c.jpg http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/465/king12.jpg http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/8081/king11.jpg |
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
I'm loving this unique build, I've never seen trucks like that before, considering there isn't many oil fields in New Jersey LOL. Just wondering where your gonna put the fuel tanks? Might need a little stretch to the frame for a place to fit the fuel tanks and tool boxes.

Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Pretty nice work so far! I like that this truck is different and unique. I kind of like the shorter look, as the one photo you posted first, shows a shorter oilfield truck, and the length of your model looks like a match. I would throw the fuel tanks under the cab and get rid of the battery box steps. That would solve the question of where to put the tanks.
|
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Nice metal work! I think the length is right, as you well know these oilfield winch trucks aren't all 300-400" wheelbase monsters! You could put a tank under one door and the battery box under the other. We get 1:1's through here spec'd like that all the time. Those trucks don't run coast to coast so they don't need to carry alot of fuel, save the room for other goodies:D

Thank you very much, have a long way to go on the bed,I have a flap type grit buffing disc for my side grinder will use, really works good grinding down and polishing up the welds ,yea I kinda like the shorter bed length, thanks for the advice on the fuel tank ,will change that. Will look like the 1.1 |

Thanks for the compliments ,yea, the lenght looks good to me to, should work fine for pulling a future trailer build, lol Thanks for the advise for the fuel tank:D |

Don't know if you got an idea for a trailer yet but check out this link if you haven't already. I like the pictures they have plus the drawings with dimensions! Makes it easy to scale:D They have an oil field float which would go nice with your build;) With your metal working ability it should be a breeze! http://www.rogerstrailers.com/trailers.php?&sn=6 |

Something like this? A tool box would still fit under either side of the winch cage.

Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Little update on the oilfield rig, been working on the headache rack, got the basic structure of the rack built ,still have the horizontal pieces to fit in and some grinding to do.
Worked on the rear bumper a little ,going to shorten up a little Couple of more pics. http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/6092/king13.jpg http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/4697/king14.jpg http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/6033/king15d.jpg http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/9752/king16.jpg |

Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Making a little more slow progress on the bed ,pretty much have the headache rack done ,now to work on the lights for the back section.:)
Couple more pics http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/8184/king20.jpg http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/3140/king21.jpg http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/4910/king22b.jpg |
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Nice work on the headache rack! Looks just like that 1:1.
|
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
That looks great! What gauge metal are you using? No doubt it's going to add some decent weight to the rear drivers, and make her dig in and pull!
|
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Are you going to add CrossForce tires? I think they are a must have for your truck.
|
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
@ rctech9
Thanks bud :) @Espeefan Hey Nathan thanks man:) ,I'm using 16 gauge for the bed, used 22 gauge for the drop recess and the back below the expanded metal. Should have some good traction. @Claus I had planned just to run the stockers for now ,I will take a look at them. |
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
That's looking great! You sure have a talent working with metal! I think it looks spot on

@dabears
Thank you very much for the compliments :) I enjoy metal working ,great stress reliever for me. @Claus Hey Claus ,thanks man, will be a while before its rolling,I still have a lot of work to do on the rig .Like those tires ,may have to look into those .Are they from rc4wd ? |
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Wow good Job on the metal work this truck looks like a pole truck that runs around down here everyday ! Can't wait to see it finished !

Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Very nice truck and workmanship, just love it!
Its maybe a bit short for gin poles, mines a scale 28 foot bed /400 inch w/b and poles are just long enough , they are the length of the bed. Good fun though now I have got them working by a winch. 3Racing make a 1:8 scale winch which might be strong enough, depending what you intend to pull on board. I have those tyres, grip is a bit more than the Tamiya tyres but think the real advantage is in the looks! Photos of winch installed have just popped up, guess you found 3Racing winches! Still getting used to this forum!! |
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
@ Gun
Hey Gun ,thanks man :) I don't see as many of these type of trucks as I used to ,new wells being drilled has slowed down quite a bit. @Espeefan Hey Nathan ,yea I agree those are some nice tires, still have a few things to get for this build ,esc ,etc.. mabey I can swing them . @uk trucker Hey uk trucker ,thanks for the compliments ,I thought about gin poles ,may leave those out though . Had to put the build on hold for a couple days ,have had some spring projects to do.Will get back to it this week ,fitting the chrome back bumper with the lights in the back |
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Well a little update on this slow build, , Been working on the rear section ,had to rengineer the back some to allow for the chrome bumper that came with the kit ,was a little thicker than I thought, also put the fuel tanks under the door, had to drill and tap some new holes for it ,added some grab bars to the rack, ordered the axial bucket light set ,mounted some lights on.Need to stop by the local hobby shop and pick up some leds.
Couple more pics of some slow progress.:) http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/6977/king27.jpg http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/9297/king28.jpg http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/569/king29.jpg |
Re: Oilfield King Hauler
Boy you are doing a fantastic job:D This build gets better and better all the time.:eek:Can't wait to see more.;)

Re: Oilfield King Hauler
I reckon this truck will be nice and heavy, geared down it will really be able to haul some weight. GREAT work.
