A KISS D11 PROJECT
 

Hello all from Tom
I'm taking an attempt at building a dozer, after waching some for many times on you tube.I feel very small with such simple tools and just a simular scale. what items I will make use of is windshield wiper or door motors with a esc to drive the #50 chain tracks. I'll have many question's and hope some can answer or suggest ideas. I'd like to thank the many that have youtube videos out there. I'll base it simuailar to Metabots ideas.thank you .

got a great start tracks can be dificult but once you build a set or two they get easyer

Thanks, td9 and Neil I've been working on the tracks a while now and your right about being somewhat difcult.there a time comsumer ,I've been putting a radius on the links for the grouser pads and have enough links now for about 12' of track.was wondering about how to lock the ends of the 10/24 threads either with single nut and spot of weld or double nut or just add nylon locknut ?thinking out loud.Tom

Tom, a drop of red Loctite should do the trick. All you have to do is heat it up a little to remove the nut if you have too. Another great idea on how to make tracks. Thanks

starting on the hubs and ilders for the tracks now,and also picked up two of the same model 12v makita donars motors.

may sound crazy but if the gearing is right you only need simple on off switches for the drives - which can make things a lot cheaper in the long haul and handle those larger voltages......besides aren't most dozers are meant to have a stable throttle with simple clutching right?

Still at it ,tracks are a tax on time for sure when I can get at them. almost ready to rivet grousers down ended up triming all the grouser heights and they are now at .700 and 2.5 wide. sort of slow going.

Building tracks are a problem for sure, but it looks like you are making good progress. I'm thinking that your grousers are still to tall but maybe some of the dozer guys on here can tell you what the height is on full-size dozers. Keep at it and keep posting pictures.

my grousers are a 1/4 inch tall in my 1/10 scale dozers with 2 inch wide pads 1/2 inch wopuld be way plenty or even 3/8 would be good

thanks for the support guys ,I was sort of wondering if they were still a bit tall. I've seen many that lose tracition at about 3/4 of a blade full an thought why were there grouser so short ? may need to shorten them again.
I was thinking about remakeing them again but I may wait till after I get it to a rolling frame .

My TD40B has ,in 1:1 size is 3.66"with a 11"pitch scaled at 1:12 is .305" with a .92" pitch . I used .375" (3/8") with a 1" pitch . In loose soil , you'll loose some traction as well on a hard pan where the grousers will not penetrate , thats something you can't avoid :( . Too high a grouser bar and you'll be ripping the pads right off the chain . Think of that grouser as a leaver , the longer it is with respect to the flat of the pad the more it will want to bend back or forward . I hope I didn't loose you :o I suddenly lost my train of thought :o:( your off to a great start :)

I think that I started out trying to do simple and under estamated the project my appallages.but I was doing a little mock up to get a size idea .after actully looking up size scale sizes a real d-11 have about 12.7 feet of track on the ground per side.at 1/6.3 scale that would be about 24.19 .mine will have 24" per side on the ground .I don't know what scale that will be but I'm already thinking the morors I lined up are not big enought.I" plug away for a while and sort things as I go.heres a couple of mock pics.

I would suggest that you pick a scale and stay close to that for overall sizes. By looking at your width compared to a D-11 you are building at an-8.48-8.96 to-1 ratio depending on which D-11 model. That would make your tracks 27"-28.5" long and pads 3.125"-3.30" wide. A 1/8 scale dozer will be REALLY BIG but that's okay if that is what you want. Have you looked at this site-http://www.ritchiespecs.com/They have a lot of tractors to chose from so you should be able to find a size you like. Please understand I am not criticizing your work. I know you have a lot of work in this so far and building tracks are tough. I also think you do not have to build an exact scale model to have a nice looking model,but I think the overall dimensions should be close for the model to look good. I personally would not try to build an exact scale model unless I had a real one sitting close by that I could take hundreds of photos and measurements from. Good luck and keep building.

thanks modelman ,good words to go by for sure.I will try to be at simalar scale that looks good and not get hung -up on real scale .fun and looks are what this will be. I'm some what forurate there is a salvage yard only a mile or so away for finding almost anything that could be thought of to incorp inside this build.throw out some ideas what to look for.windsheild wiper motors ,electic seat motors ,door window motors ,small starter motors,electic fuel pumps ,I seen a power unit for a tailgate lift complete just all bent.but the hyd looked there.and all sorts of cut up farm equipment,acme and square threads on some old machines.the Imagiation gone wild.thanks :D

see if you can get a couple of electric mirrior motors and cables and a couple of the air pumps and etc from a seat that has inflatable back support
i now that ford windstar vans have them on the driver side
small 12volt air compressor lol

MY appaullages again for such a time delay on this ,it just has gotten away from me.I very much underestamated it .but will work thur it and get back to it soon.only some small things was done lately.too much chaseing walleye an fixing other stuff.I'm sort of following a 1/10 scale but not to the exact.since I started it ,I've found to be under capable in the barn/shop.and have aquired a tool here and there to help out in a project.I found a plasma cutter at a auction and have been makeing a 32" sheet metal brake.I though about really changeing things up and use a small four stroke motor out of those weed wackers and a oil injection pump off a snowmobile motor for a hyd pump.but just a lose though for now.I"m looking for it weight in at around 90 lbs or more ,not sure where I'm going with it yet.thanks for the intrest.

Wow this thing is going to be a beast. 1/10 scale is perfect and I do agree with the other comments saying closest to scale is better because it will look much more realistic. I'm building a Madill Yarder at 1/12 scale and the tracks have been quite the challenge for me. Keep up the good work!

Wow how much do you expect it to way
