Super Bling trailer mods
Hello all. Since the day I got my flatbed trailer from Tamiya I had one complaint....Too short!!! So I thought of making a B train to reduce that effect. I ordered another flat bed and started making plans how to get the 5th wheel in the proper place and height on the back end of my original trailer. Well, after more thinking and looking at what I could do, I scrapped the b train idea and chose to lenghten my original trailer buy using the frame rails of the trailer I just got.
So here's some pics of my progress so far...... http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...uler2012/8.jpg Trimmed the back end of original trailer http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...2/trailer1.jpg Cut front of new rails off. http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...ler2012/T3.jpg http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...ler2012/T4.jpg combined new rails with old trailer http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...ler2012/T7.jpg Im thinking maybe a heavy haul 4 axle trailer? http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...ler2012/T8.jpg |
Re: Super Bling trailer mods
I fixed your links so the pics would show up instead of a link to the pic. When selecting a link from photo bucket select the bottom ling which is IMG code and the pic will show up instead of the link to it. If you have any questions on posting pics just ask and we can help.
Nice work on stretching the trailer and I think it would look good as a quad axle. Travis |
Re: Super Bling trailer mods
Looks great so far!! I agree with Travis i think the quad axle looks kinda cool! what did you use to cut your rails down?
|
Re: Super Bling trailer mods
Looks great. Really liking the quad axle as well. Are you going to remove the uprights?

Glad you like the quad axle, we do have lots of them on our highways up here in Canada.....besides, got lots of parts in box, may as well use em...lol Thanks again, no more thumbnails from me! Mario |

I cut the rails the old fashion way... A mini hack saw ! Made my cut mark lines with a exacto knife and then just slowly but surely made the cut. Actually turned out nice and clean and straight. Not everyone has a milling machine, bandsaw and lathe at their disposal, so do what you can with what you got I say. Lol Forgot to mention, new trailer length is 38". The mod added 10" to trailer. Thanks for lookin and your input! Mario |

I just knew someone was going to ask me about the uprights..... They have to stay on for 2 reasons....#1 - the main use of this trailer is to haul beer to my back yard gazebo. When friends are over for drinks , I load the trailer , sit in the house looking out a bedroom window , and drive the load of beer out to the gazebo. Everyone gets a good chuckle when I do it , honking the horn as I arrive....lol With the uprights I can lay 3 cans or bottles across the deck perfectly and then stack 2 on top of that, the chains then keep it all secure. The original length trailer could hold 15 bottles or 26 cans ! New length should hold a complete 24 bottles. Reason #2- when I installed the additional trailer side rails I wanted to hide the seam. I did this by cutting original rails very near to the uprights mounting block. The seam is hidden behind the mount. No uprights means my seam will show. Future plans is to find a way to secure cans or bottles to the deck without the uprights and cover up the seam with a decal or something. Thanks for looking Mario |
Re: Super Bling trailer mods
Looks good, I like the quad axle as well, You can also use a dremmel to cut frame rails, just run it at a lower speed!!

I still have a few plates to cut. I definitely will try at a slower speed. Thanks dude! |
Re: Super Bling trailer mods
Hello all.
Got some more work done on trailer. Using front part of cut rails I found a perfect fishplate to use. http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...ailerplate.jpg then completed securing frame rails. By stroke of luck, the location for suspension mounting plate also tied in the two rails and gives direct support at the joint! http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...lerbolting.jpg http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...ilersuspen.jpg Now a straight, super strong rolling trailer... http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...2/trailer3.jpg And a quad axle trailer needs quad tail lights right? http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...ilerlights.jpg http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...lerlights2.jpg I have a SS tronix wireless light kit with 20 extra leds on order so cant do the floor yet but have an idea how to spruce it up... http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...ilerfloor2.jpg http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...ailerfloor.jpg I might try a arrow type seam or zig zag....going to experiment. thats it for now. Thanks for looking! Mario |
Re: Super Bling trailer mods

Now THAT is a flatbed. Take note Tamiya!!!

Re: Super Bling trailer mods
Thanks Swagger, I said the trailer was 38" long. My calculation was wrong, it measures 39" long so scale length is 45.5 ft which is completely reasonable and much more proportional to the truck. Glad you like it.
Been up north at work for 12 days now, 2 more to go.... My wife called to let me know I got a package from ss tronix. My wireless light kit has arrived along with the motorized leg kit from tower hobbies! If 14 days living in a camp ain't bad enough, knowing I got goodies at home to play with makes it almost unbearable!!! Can't wait to get home and finish my flatbed..... Oooops, I mean, can't wait to see my wife give her a hug and kiss, and then finish my trailer. Lol |
Re: Super Bling trailer mods
that is one bad a@# trailer. you lost all your lights on that terrain though. mine fell out also on flat as can be driveway which is why i came up with a different one.great truck and trailer combo the suspension looks great on the video.

Re: Super Bling trailer mods
Things are coming along very nicely. I got my wireless kit from SS Tronix. All lights and additional 14 marker lights are wired in. When I bought my truck I purchased an extra battery which I am now using for the trailer, an Onyx 3,000 milli amp. I made a cover for all the wiring components out of the leftover deck from the second trailer i bought. the wiring for rear tailights are routed up through the deck and then drop back down where the relay board is located to hide the wires as much as possible. All exposed wiring has been painted flat black to try and resemble hose's and wiring harness. And I can access the battery connector easily for recharging without having to remove. Trailer tested ok, all lights working so now I need to get my truck finished to complete testing of system, then I can install deck planks with a couple coats of clear stain. I greatly enjoyed assembling my truck but I'm having all kinds of fun doing mods to the truck and trailer! If I ever run out of things to tweak.....then it's time for the next rig! lol

Re: Super Bling trailer mods

Re: Super Bling trailer mods
Hey All. It's been a real long time since I had any new updates on my flatbed......and then Sharkey came along:eek::D
Thanks to his great work and attention to detail, the trailer has a new looking deck and some cargo. So, I blew my back today at work , wasnt lifting nothing crazy, just an awkward position and tried to bend a little too much:eek: :( Turns out the worst or most uncomfortable thing is sitting on the couch so instead I dusted off the flatbed and this thread to show ya this...:D Sorry bout the crappy indoor lighting but hey, the days are dark by 5pm, its currently -18 F outside and i just didnt want to wait to shoot some pics and videos http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...s/newdeck6.jpg http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...s/newdeck5.jpg then i Realized i didnt put the DOT tape on yet:eek: http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...s/newdeck4.jpg Notice the double star Tamiya sticker on the side rail?......my crude but effective way to cover up the trailer extension seam:o http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...s/newdeck3.jpg http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...s/newdeck2.jpg http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...s/newdeck1.jpg and a couple of Sharkeys crates http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...s/newdeck7.jpg http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...s/newdeck8.jpg so then i got carried away and pulled out the forklift.... it needs some work, tighten the fork carriage and add some counterweight but for 30 bucks from evil bay.... it works!:D lol http://youtu.be/fwc-9q5Hn58 http://youtu.be/YMJ2tddjFsk Thanks for looking , all comments welcome oh, and the budwiser is remnants from a great football weekend. GO RAVENS ! GO RAY ! Mario |

Re: Super Bling trailer mods
Working on getting the crates set up Adam:).
I forgot to mention that along with the ratchet straps I bought from PMD I also got a bunch of grab and slip hooks. I've been trying to find something to anchor the chains I have to the deck and found this http://www.ebay.com/itm/100-SMALL-D-...80565764215%26 I think the size is perfect and should work great!:D Mario |

Re: Super Bling trailer mods
Nice work on extending the trailer, Mario. Quad axles make me think Michigan hauler! Let us know how you like the SS Tronix kit.
|
Re: Super Bling trailer mods
Thanks guys.:).
I am very happy with and have absolutely no regrets buying the SS Tronix kit. This is money well spent for a system which is small, easy to install and completely plug and play. The trailer board, which is included in the standard kit comes with 2 additional relays which can handle up to 60 led each! And for about 30 bucks I purchased an aux board to connect to Susan's truck which has the same capacity and runs all the additional lights on it. ( sleeper, steps, air cleaners, roof markers, front and rear bumpers and more to come! ).all run by the MFU functions, no extra switches required. I also got the motorized leg board for the flat deck and it works great. I can't remember who I was talking to at the Indy show last year but they said there was an issue with the motorized leg function awhile back from SS Tronix or it was still in the works. Well, believe me, the problem is solved! Both trucks now have the kit and just last week I tested Susan's truck on the flatbed and worked first try! Lights , legs, all works great. One problem is you can't be in a rush to get it. Once you place an order, the guy starts making the kit in the evenings. Takes 2-3 weeks to build and test before shipping, then another 2-3 weeks to come across the ocean. Other than that, great product, great people to deal with and lots of support if you need. I've got pricing on all the stuff they offer, if you want more info, send me a PM. Mario |
