Scania Toter
First I built a stock truck - Scania 640 - made the wife real happy to see that I built one complete before I started to modify it...
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0140.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0142.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0139.jpg - then I ordered up a pre-transmission 3:1 from Willy - tied in a PMD puller motor... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0104.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0111.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0112.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0114.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0115.jpg - had to back later and change out the shift servo again to a full size - did that at Indy .... A then did my ussual - thought about it for a few weeks .....Had been thinking of keeping it a twin axel but then decided for a Single ..... Then earlier this week the time felt right ...... Tear it down http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0150.jpg Used a set of trailing arms that I got from Ed 2yrs ago and made hangers and trailing arms... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0152.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0153.jpg I located the aaaxel so that I could maintain the Scania fender system http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0149.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0148.jpg ...... Waht you think so far......Izzy |
Re: Scania Toter
- some more pics -
Shortening the frame http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0154.jpg On Friday I spent some time at a mill and made the rear hitch assembly - had drawn it up weeks ago and pondered how it might turn out... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0155.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0156.jpg I used standazrd shocks witht he springs to the bottom - over the screw and inside the shock body - adds spring on the lift side - used nitro fuel tube where the spring normally is placed for support - alittle give but plety strong http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0157.jpg test fit the fenders - planned it so that the hitch had the fender supports in them http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0158.jpg found out that I shortened it less than the stadard drive shaft - used a punisher I had - happened to e the right length. ... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0160.jpg spent Sat. morning on the fifth wheel plate - used the one from the powered leg kit - areal tight fit on a single axel short wheel base - sorry only a few pics..... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0162.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0163.jpg And spent last night working on the hitch lift mechanism.....370 oz-in servo !!!! Had to reverse the hitch plates - Servo just fits behind the axel - seriously tight for space - got lucky as I picked up the servo yesterday and did not plan on the spacing. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0165.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0164.jpg |

Re: Scania Toter
Any body from northern Indiana knows what this truck is for or any body who bought a new house and it showed up on wheels. Good job Izzy the truck looks great.

Re: Scania Toter
Looks like a house mover hitch to me. Great looking build.

Re: Scania Toter
Right on the nose - round here - mobile home manufacturing capital of the US - or at least it was until about 2yrs ago - theyre called "toters". Best technical term is "Modular Home re-location and services vehicle".....
a video - at the tail end is the hitch - I have it on a 2-way switch - http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...h_VID00011.jpg and this is what toters are for.... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...oter1_ro95.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ter/toter1.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...oter/toter.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ftingHouse.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...1275778117.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...1275778117.jpg |
Re: Scania Toter
Very neat modification to the Scania Chris, very cool! Love the ball hitch setup.
When are we going to see something built to pull behind it?!:) -Alex |
Re: Scania Toter
I purchased wheels in Indy this year - along with leaf springs - I ned to modify the axels (longer) and come up with a hanger system. Already been thinking about the frame system - probably 3/8 x 3/4 16ga channels back to back
Debating whether I go with a Modular type set---up (where the frame gets returned for the next hosue section) or Mobile type set-up (where the frae is a structural part of the house. I am leaning for Modular - so some day we can have a crane set the house sections in place...... Most modulars around here are 16' x 80' with hinged roof sections for height limitations... that's 13" x 66" scaled out |
Re: Scania Toter

But yes, I think the modular route would be a little bit cooler, especially with the mention of a telescopic crane to pick the sections and set them in place.:) Heck that white corrugated material you used for the scale shack (at least if I remember correctly that's yours) would be perfect for something like this! -Alex |
Re: Scania Toter
Would a crawler crane work instead of a telescopic?
|
Re: Scania Toter
it would be really kool to build up a double wide for the truck....

Chris - You did another SUPER job! Now start fabbing the FEMA trailers!:D -Terry |
Re: Scania Toter
Alex - I have pondered the corex (cardboard like plastic sheet) for the house portion - I had thought that maybe it was too chinsey and un-realistic..... I have been checking out doll house stuff - not quit the same scale but maybe close enough????? I'll need windows, doors, roofing, siding, shutters etc....
Terry - I have been thinking about a torpedo deck and camping trailers .... LOL or maybe even one of the double deck ones with pop ups.... Dad drove both and even a custom straight truck with a bever tail trailer - very unique.... Since I am home sick from work ... cough .... cough ... cough I will post some pics of the last few days work... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0166.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0171.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0174.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0173.jpg More to uplaod this afternoon ..... |
Re: Scania Toter
Pic update - added the rear panels to the toter body......
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0175.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0176.jpg next up - the extendable / retractable mirror mounts .... If I can pull it off..... |
Re: Scania Toter
Sorry about the blurry shots guys - I try re-taking them tonight perhaps...

Re: Scania Toter
An update - added my extendable mirrors - first attempt at soldering Brass - took a bit to get used to.

|
Re: Scania Toter
That looks great Chris! Nice work!!
|
Re: Scania Toter
Great job on the mirrors Chris.
Travis |
Re: Scania Toter
mirrors are having issues - not so impressed about hte amount of travel - I have them on Servos - but they are tending to bind up - will have to find another way..... And my mirror brackets broke - the wire section from the tube section - soldering steel to brass just isn't working out so well......we'll try something else and post some pics.....

Re: Scania Toter
- update -
remade the internals on the mirrors - to get the 3" of pull out each side - not yet servo driven - waiting on santa :o.... - but I did get the frame nearly done :D ....:eek: http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0231.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0232.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0230.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0233.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0234.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/IMG_0235.jpg what ya think??? |
Re: Scania Toter
Looks real good. Are you going to build half a house on the frame or just leave it bare?
|
Re: Scania Toter
Izzy nice gob mounting the axles. It is hard to tell in the pics how long it realy is but I have seen this in person and it is almost as tall as me and I am 5ft 9in I know I'm not real tall but that is one long trailer.

Re: Scania Toter
Nice job! Man,that trailer must have some real back swing. Can;t wait to see this baby done.

Re: Scania Toter
Chris, Is the trailer going to be made out of styrene, wood, metal, or something more exotic? Can't wait to see you pulling it at Indy!!
|
Re: Scania Toter
Looks good Chris. I sure have seen a lot of those and your spot on. Just be sure to paint it black, add rust, and bend the rear crossmember to the rear where the tow strap has been pulling on it. :) FYI - the homes I built were 15' 10" wide for a 32' and about 11' 6" to 12' 6" tall with the roof folded on the high side, trailer not included.
|
Re: Scania Toter
nice start Chris trailer is looking good so far.
|
Re: Scania Toter
Nice work Chris. Something you don't see modeled very often. I'm looking forward to seeing the trailer loaded with a half house! This has been a great build. I like your machine work and the rear hitch. It turned out great.

Re: Scania Toter
2 kool!! My wife and I bought a double wide over the summer and its kinda kool how they bring it. It came in halves and the toter brought one and a tractor, large John Deer I think, the other. At 76' by 30' it was a job getting it down a rual path. They pulled both side by side and in a week or two it was ready to go. Instant summer home! If we ever decide to move it I'll give you a call.:D
|
Re: Scania Toter
between u and tamiya cowboy someone needs to build the crane to setup the double wides.
|
Re: Scania Toter
Thanks Guys
- Pugs - I'll build a half section of House - it will be removable ;) - Travis - main rails are 60" - Steve - should be around the 70 foot scaled  - tc1cat - hoping to have the house protion done by Spring - but we'll see - sometimes I get on a roll - other times it takes me awhile. As for materials I was hoping ot be fairly realistic on the house build - we'll see - Jon - thanks for the measurements - I am gonna need those .... - Scott - I thought you were building the crane??:D - anybody built a doll house before?? I could use the advice ......:p |
