Cab over dump and pup (update pup replaced with a new trailer)

I have decided to build a day cab cabover dump truck and pup trailer. I am going to post this in steps so new guys can see what all goes into building it.

Cutting the cab up and putting it back together.

Cab looks great, cutting cabs on the table saw must save alot of time! What blade are you using?

fhhhstix 08-13-2010 11:47 PM

The blade is a 120 tooth finish blade.

fhhhstix 08-14-2010 05:49 PM

Next comes the truck kit and building the frame. It will be AWD with a RC4WD R2 trans, axial trans for transfer case, and a TLT axle for the front.

Re: Cab over dump and pup

Donny here are some pics of the stuff you will need to build a screw drive.

First get some rails from Lowe's it is actually 1/2in cap for ply wood.
Next get some delrin to make the slide
Next get a piece of 10-32 all thread and a 10-32 furniture nut and a thrust bearing it is the blue piece at the end of the screw drive by the nut.
next get at least a 50:1 gear motor and a coupler to hook the motor to the gear motor. I use an all thread nut and drill it for two set screws.

Re: Cab over dump and pup

so i can get all that stuff at lowes?

fhhhstix 08-15-2010 06:50 PM

Re: Cab over dump and pup

The delrin, gear motor , and thust bearing will have to come from somewhere else. I get the gear motor from PMD and the thrust bearing is from my local hobby shop and the delrin is from a local plastic suplier the same place I get the styrene.

Re: Cab over dump and pup

It looks to be but I'll ask anyway. Are the screw drives less fuss and muss than the hydros? It seems as it would also be more cost effective. would the motors power decide how much the dump could lift? Sorry for all the ?'s but Ive been looking at the Carson setup and the one sold at GT and they aint cheap. Thanks!

Izzy 10-07-2010 07:58 AM

Re: Cab over dump and pup

the power of the dump is tied to the power of the motor - including the gear drive - but more importantly the angle of the push rod. Think of it as a triangle - the base frame - the push rod - the bed fo the dump. The more open the triangle the easier it is to drive - more flat or closed the triangle the worse it gets

Just as Izzy said the motor, Gear reduction unit, angle of the push rod, and pitch of the thread all make a difference in how well it works. There is a member on here named mustang that used one of the carson scissor lifts and he likes it but you have to notch out the frame to get it to fit. As for hyd cylinders I have one hyd lift dump truck and the way I built the thing hyd's were the best choise but I WILL NEVER DO IT AGAIN!!!

Thanks for the input Izzy these tips are what helped me get my dump trailer working.

Great build thread, Travis!

Gotta ask - what are you using for driveshafts, and where do you buy them?

Can't find anything like those around here at local hobby shops...

Go to your local hobby shop and go to the Traxxas section they are the long slide shafts for the Stampead and rustler you can buy them in packages of 6. Here is a link.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJH85&P=7

And the yokes in this link go real well with them they are able to transfer more power to the axle than the axle can handle without breaking.

The truck looks great! You have my vote for build of the month! I was wondering what Rpm the dump motor is?

fhhhstix 08-07-2011 07:46 PM

Re: Cab over dump and pup

Thanks the motor in the truck dump mechanism is a 300rpm motor but I have know idea what is in the pup I used a cordless screwdriver from Wall Mart.

Once again thank you for your help! I got everything together for my dump project (thanks to you). I found a good web site with gear box motors. http://www.robotmarketplace.com/prod...rs_geared.html

Re: Cab over dump and pup

I sold the pup dump trailer so I needed a new trailer for the truck to pull. I decided I would try to build a bumper pull equipment trailer and this is what I came up with. I still need to build the ramps and the mechanism to raise and lower them.

Thanks snowball! I have a lot of ideas running through my head but not enough time or money for all of them. This was a kind of a simple one for something different.
