Chevy 2500 Pickup
Hey guys,
Started this build about a week ago, after collecting parts for quite some time. The truck is 1:10, I was trying to do a 1:14 in the beginning, however, parts for the larger scales is so much easier to work with. Anyways, started off with a cheap Rc body that I got off Ebay and bought and modified a trail finder chassis to go under the body. I'm shooting for a some what realistic stance and height on this one, hopefully I can get something close. Eventually I would like to get a sound unit for this, I think a diesel would be pretty neat. ;) Here is where I'm at now with the build: Here is the modified chassis. Had to cut off an inch or two off the end, and move the rear axle up about the same. Since the original chassis has so much flex in the suspension, I decided to put some small shocks on it to restrict the travel, but still give it some articulation. http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8f5b891b.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps139ad8ff.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psd597c779.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1d694701.jpg After getting the stance about right, I couldnt stand the look of the bed of the truck. It had the molding from a roll bar that was on it previously, so I went ahead and cut it out and began to make a new one from styrene. I'm just waiting for the putty to dry now so I can get to sanding it down. http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psbf372565.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...pse6dd6f92.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps72606a64.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9e2aa2ec.jpg Thats where I'm at now, should have some more tonight. Thanks for looking and suggestions are more than welcome! :) |
Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
Looks good! Keep up the good work
|
Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
Nice, J.D.! The right manufacturer too. The stance is right on. What about a headache rack, fuel tanks and tool box? It would give it the work truck look. Keep it up!

Basically finished the body and rolling chassis. The body work is no where near perfect but its a work truck so it wont matter. ;) Now I have to wait for the motor and ESC to get here, then possibly some sound :) I still need to finish the tail gate but that is no big deal and can be done whenever. The next step on this build is to build a after market tow package. I think I will build it from brass or I might try out the one from Rc4wd first and see if it works.... Here are some more pictures. I also put it next to my Pete for a size reference :D Sorry about some of the pictures.... they didnt turn out too well.... http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps487ab518.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psd29c7832.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps38453e01.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9e51937b.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps31ada045.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psafa758b1.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0947fb17.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps79ff4d28.jpg Thanks for looking! |

Have a bit of an update. Nothing has actually been done to the truck yet, but I started designing something new and will use my new piece of equipment that I bought for my birthday to build it ;);) Here is just the start of what I'm building but its far enough to tell what it is. haha Since I work for a snow removal company I thought it would be pretty neat to make a miniature Western snowplow. I'm not replicating a single plow, this one is a bit of a hybrid between a few plows that we run. It would be extremely hard to replicate the mounting system on the new plows, so it will be similar to the older style mounts. The rest of the plow should be pretty close, however, I wont be using hydraulics. I'm going to use a winch for practical purposes, and a servo to turn the plow. Hopefully you guys like it! :):) Here is the plow assembly as it sits now: http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1e2395d4.png Here is the plow mounting kit that I designed to fit on the pick up: http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psd93f163d.png Here is the new piece of equipment ;);) http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psa0661736.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6c103a50.jpg I figured why not? I've watched the KW body attempt and thought it was pretty awesome so I thought i would give it a try. The Afinia unit is very user friendly and I have had no problems this far. Thanks for looking |
Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
The truck turned out nice JD, but this going to be fun watching this plow "grow", and it will be neat on the truck! Keep posting updates!

Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
That's pretty AWESOME  :D
Post pic's as you go, JD :) :D I like the truck. Any other plans to modify the truck? :) - RCT |

Have a bit of an update today... Mounted the snow plow mount and the adapter for the tow package. Going to rework the tow package so it sits snug to the bottom of the bumper. Have the winch and light carriage done. took 3 tries to get it perfect. Here are some pictures. Next will be the plow articulation and plow roll over mechanics. :) Waiting on a package from servo city with a bunch of 2-56 bolts and a servo to make some more progress http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6b8d7533.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psff92f583.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1238fe1f.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psc9be6215.jpg |
Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
Have another update for you guys. Was able to get the main plow support made about a week ago and last night I printed the roll and pivot pieces. Also did some brass work to pull it all together. Got a video of it functioning :D:D

Wow, that's an impressive snow plow! I would like to play with 3d printing someday.

Chevy 2500 Pickup and Snow Plow
Quote:
Pretty much wrapped up the plow today. Still needs some sanding and decals, as well as some markers for the plow and wings and maybe some lights down the road. :p The important part is that it works :D I ended up lucking out and will be able to use this for my final in my Inventor class. I highly doubt many of my class mates will expect for me to bring in a real model of what I designed ;) Hopefully by next Tuesday I have the little details done too. Anyways, I took the truck and plow to the Kansas show and used it to push some dirt there and was pretty happy with how it performed. Brought it home and after staring at it for a while figured the plow height was too high so I redesigned to be a little shorter. Well I'll shut up and let the pictures and video do the talking :D VIDEO: http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3a349457.jpg The pictures from the Kansas show plowing some oil dry. http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2fa0f65d.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psbf416129.jpg Dont have any good reference pictures, but this is the second version of the plow. The pictures from Kansas are with the first version. Even now its pretty high but much better that the first one. http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps57fbdc8d.jpg Then with the wings I completed today. To date, I haven't been able to find any other RC snow plows that have had wings. (I realize now, because they are a pain in the *** to design for such a simple piece :o ) But I thought doing the wings would set it apart from all the others. I think the working trip edge sets it apart too. http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psb205b4b7.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4a75a3f6.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7d6aa2d4.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psfc0d34b2.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps44be655c.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9d60bae7.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psf1f75a4a.jpg Thanks everyone for looking, sorry about the phone pictures..... my camera didn't appreciate the flood in the basement haha Should have a few more updates on the plow before it is finished. I think I'm going to take a shot at a working salt spreader too ;) |
Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
The salt spreader should be easy with the 3d printer, I like the plow!

Thought I could show the Cad models. This is what I'm presenting for my final and I'm taking the truck in  I'm thinking I can squeeze an A outta this one ;) I didnt model every little thing on this one since I was already pressed for time. I'm hoping to improve on my 3D modeling skills over the summer :) http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4ea58d2c.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...pscfcadb49.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1b2c8399.jpg |
Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
Not much of an update, but a few small details that I did today. It bugged me that I hadn't made the plow markers yet. Even though they are such a small and simple detail, in real life you rely on them so much to know where you are. So I ran to the hardware store to pick up the brass and started bending and painting. I would still like to do vinyl decals, but who knows if I'll ever get around to them... I also put a SMX into the truck, it came out of my semi and it works okay, but I would like to get a new one for the Pete because this one got wet in the flood and ruined the potentiometer and casing..... Anyways, here are some pictures and a video. I really need to find some "snow" to break this thing in before winter :D

Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
JD that is an awesome 2500 you've built, your printing design and technic is impressive, nice work.

Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
Been working on a few things for the truck.... Made a mount for the RC4WD Pintle and Lunette. And since I made that I ordered a bruder dump trailer and started to convert it so it will dump, just need to get a faster motor to run the screw drive! No pictures of the trailer yet... Then I ordered a light bar for a 1:24 cop car but got all the LEDs in amber. Can't have a proper plow truck without a light bar ;) Ordered a kit for wig wags too so should have those next week sometime :D
Some of the pictures are a little out of focus :o http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1620d4dc.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...psc70bfe8d.jpg http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3046fd17.jpg VIDEO: http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7ccc25c6.jpg |

Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
More people should look at this thread. I'm sure it's been overlooked all to easily. This is a really great build. I like the snowplow and the truck. Very cool, J.D. I love all the little details.

Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
This truck keeps developing into something even cooler! I love the new blade, and wings! Light bar is sweet as well!
What do you use to make your parts? Since you drew them up in CAD, did you 3D print them? |
Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
Wow, looks like I'm a little late on these replies.... been a little busy with work. :o:o

Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
JD, this is looking good can't, wait to see a video, will you be using table salt or will it work with regular "sidewalk" salt?
|
Re: Chevy 2500 Pickup
Will the spreader work with fertilizer too?
Cheers, Neil. |
