Aeromax Overhaul
I have decided to rebuild my Aeromax. Making it into a winch tractor. Started with suspension changes to get better travel and traction.http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...psa77f9387.jpg

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Got time in on winch deck and housing as it was raining today. Here is a mock up as is. Also decided to lower sleeper some for a pop up wide load sign.

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Lots to do yet. Went with steel as I want some weight to stabilize truck for winch work. Have lazer cut parts on order for a tail roll and several other small parts. Going to add a manual sliding 5th wheel plate.
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
looks tough !! can waite to see the sliding 5th wheel and make a extra one if ya know what i mean!!!
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Like the headache rack ,looking good ,look forward to seeing more of this build
Are you using 1/4 keystock ,what I used on my oilfileld king hauler worked good .keep up the good work :D |
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Working at a welding shop I brought in a few 20' lengths of square bar. Pricing power I paid pennies a foot for 1/4", 3/8" & 1/2" material. Far cheaper than the ey stock.

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
got my laser cut parts for my tail roll assembly. here is what they look like fresh from the package. Will post pics as assembly happens.

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
That's a beautiful job on your rear axles setup. It looks like you are going to have a lot of articulation, and I would think that the stock dogbones are going to want to fall out. Are you looking at aftermarket replacements for this?
Also, if you want to update it to a Sterling, there are now replacement stickers that fit the kit body: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TAMIYA-1-14-...ht_1250wt_1156 -Mike |
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
I will be changing out the drive shafts. However I owned a fleet of 5 ford's very similar to this hauling cattle and hogs. I will likely not update to sterling. Thanks for the info though.

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Got the frames drilled, tail roll working, and enough assembly done to order in drive shafts. Here us how she looks. Want to make sure all is functioning correctly before I worry about paint and polish.

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Pretty strong looking setup, looks like double frame rails.
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
That is epic. I like it. I also like the double frame rails. Make it look really clean, and different. Bet ya don't bend it. :D
Thanks Cody |
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
she looking good!

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Got done to the point of some paint before assembles. Here is what's done.......

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
not bad!
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Nice job on the air suspension upgrade.
Can you give us an idea of what the final product is going to look like? Paul |
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Got drive shafts and enought other parts finally all assembled. Went out to play and in the end blew my steering servo horn. Was running a stock tamiya kit horn on steering servo. Might have had something to do with the 75 lbs rock on the trailer. Got to hand in to Garden Trucking and the 4:1 gear reduction unit amazing pull power increase. Was just about to add another 75 lbs or so rock onto the second trailer of my supper b set when the steering went. Here is a pictur of the rock I got slammed in the duals with the first bolder on deck.
http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1755d7d1.jpg Also shows the new drive shafts. Here are some other pics of the winch deck. Still making tool boxes, alum headach rack plates, alum fenders, and working on cab yet. http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...ps306fa733.jpg http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1bf6267b.jpg http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4fae6977.jpg http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...psef1125e0.jpg Still lots to do but getting closer all of the time. Hope ya all like. |
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
That looks nice. Those tires definitely have some knobs on them. I think your cab protector/winch mount and platform turned out really nice. With black paint on them, those parts look great! Did you paint the cab yet?
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
If all goes good I will be getting to paint on the cab tomorrow. Was still adding a little filler to some of the custom changes. Mabey gona go into work where I have good toys and make the tool boxes tomorrow too. Polishing the alum will take a while I am still playing around with my tumbler to find good results in using it to do base polish.
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Got some of the aluminum work done. Still have to make the 2 tool boxes and polish it all.

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
that truck is looking great!! like everything you have done so far
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Well got her done. A few small things left. New trailer wire connector, and to decide on tanks or tool boxes under walking deck. Ran out of radio functions so no pov camera for now. Looking into 12 to 16 function radio's but that will be a while. Hope you all like.

Looks great! I like all the custom touches you did instead of buying off the shelf goodies.

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Here are a few video's done by Stuff at Estevan model engineering show this fall. Dean does wonderful work with the camera.
http://youtu.be/P5RiumWqBCs http://youtu.be/bt9Ra5OmpII Hope ya all like to see it in action. I am upgrading the winch yet again. Still not quite happy with it. |
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Great job on the overhaul Dieselchopper, really like the trailer ,tanks ,and skids you built ,they all look great, enjoyed the vids.
I need to get back to work my skid mounted tank ,have the skid built, got some 6 in pvc ,capped and sealed ,now onto plumbing ,pressurized water with a tank valve mabey:thinking: keep up the good work:D |
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Dieselchopper.. You must drive a truck like that.. Or you have very good skills with a remote..
Truck is very real and so is the equipment that you were using.. Like what you have done... Wayne |
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
I actually have rarely driven trucks like this one, only used a winch line a few dozen times in real life. I have been around trucking and equipment all of my life. Growing up on the farm I had lots of practice with anything that moves. I am now a welding shop manager, which gives me some real nice toys to build toys with.........

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
I was not to far of then...

Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Nice work! Like that rear suspension. Very cool. Nice build.
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Looking good Diesel Chopper! I like your cab guard, combination winch rack. Those short go between fenders are really nice as well.
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Xllnt work throughout this build, well done Shawn.
I got some ideas & things for you to build for next yr's engineering show to keep us all busy. ;) |

As well I want to thank all who have praised this rebuild. I know the approval of peers is valued to me as I am sure it is with most all of us on here.
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
nice ideas...good job.
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Kool build - I like the detail of the fenders transitioning in width from the deck to over the wheels - nice look.
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Just seen this one for the first time, very unique!
|
Re: Aeromax Overhaul
Came out pretty nice, like what you did with the chopped roof.
