My First Truck Build
Here is the start to my King Hauler.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-W...20_203353.jpeg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-q...20_203423.jpeg Rails are 28" long from SemiJoe, I chose to go with these because I didn't want to attempt to drill rails on my first build. The 3 crossmembers are IHB parts. Rear Bumper Mount is from True Scale. I also used Roller Bearings from FastEddy Rest is stock parts (for now) I'm going to get some silver hex bolts from RC4WD and replace the screws in the frame rails so they look like polished frame bolts. I will wet sand the sides of the frame rails when I do that. More to come, Chris |
Re: My First Truck Build
Great start Chris... like the blue and longer frame......

Re: My First Truck Build
Looking good Chris, your off to a good start. Keep the pics coming.

Re: My First Truck Build
Show truck!
Great color choice. |
Re: My First Truck Build
Nice start!! Any chance you know what the body color/s will be??
|
Re: My First Truck Build
It will be some kind of combination of Blue and White, not positive the exact pattern yet.
|
Re: My First Truck Build
You are at an awesome start for a first truck!! Cant wait to see what you come up with
|
Re: My First Truck Build
Here is a quick mock up with wheels/tires and cab just sitting in place.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-A...-no/build3.jpg The fuel tank will be in the normal place, then I will add a second set of steps between them and the 1/4 fenders. About done with mockup on the frame, then I can tear it apart and give it final paint and clear. Hopefully in about 2 weeks my frame will be complete to the point I plan to have it at now. More to come, Chris |
Re: My First Truck Build
That blue is very nice. I think a white cab with a good thick stripe of blue and another color would be sweet!! Red pops in mind but that might seem of the wall unless its incorporated good!

Re: My First Truck Build
Well, for a paint design I'm thinking either this:

Re: My First Truck Build
Just a quick update, frame is back apart. Working on sanding and prepping for the "finished" paint job. Rails are sanded, stripped the paint off of some pieces. Going to work on crossmembers next.
Before I paint I'm going to look at getting a new aluminum suspension crossmember. I'm also going to replace my std. Futaba steer servo with a precision servo after reading some more on here. Haven't ordered my bolts yet. RC4WD wanted a rediculous amount to ship them. Looking at using regular stainless hex bolts and polishing the head. Can get them at my local Fastenal for cheap.. |
Re: My First Truck Build
In the long run you will be much happier with the rc4wd scale for the little extra.. a much better look.......
Just my 2 cents... Wayne |
Re: My First Truck Build
I just ordered some more myself, the first shipping option is outrageous. Scroll down to usps I went from 39.00 shipping to 2.90
|
Re: My First Truck Build
Just a quick update. Still working, tore the frame back down and sanded or stripped paint for a final paint job. My hobby room ceiling is full of wires with fresh blue parts hanging from it. Today I started clearing those parts that have had a week to dry. By the end of the week all of the clearing should be done, going to let it cure for a week before I polish the parts and begin the assembly.
I ordered bolts from RC4WD, thanks Cabs for pointing out that I should have looked further into the shipping options. DOH! In the meantime I'm trying to decide my tail lights and rear end wiring. More to come with pics next time, Chris |
Re: My First Truck Build
Got to exited, put a big run in my clearcoat on one frame rail, so it is sanded back down and being repainted.....sigh.
Working on the cab and have a question. Is there an aftermarket aircleaner with the hose for a King Hauler? |
Re: My First Truck Build
yes gardentrucking has them this trucks gonna look sick i love that shade of blue you picked for it.
|
Re: My First Truck Build
Finally it is back together. Third time on the paint job is a charm. I stripped so much I actually made $200 in $1 bills:eek:
So far only upgrades are longer frame rails and a ton of RC4WD 3mm scale screws. I have a new front bumper mount from Integy on the way as I stripped a couple of holes in the plastic one. Otherwise parts are stock Tamiya for now anyway. I need to have it running by the April show in Newton. Thanks for looking, Chrishttps://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-K...206_203249.jpg |
Re: My First Truck Build
I used steves (ihbuilder) air cleaners with the rubber intake elbows from ric @pmd . Looksblike a set of pete or kw vortex air cleaners.
|
Re: My First Truck Build
Not much of an update, floors are painted and in, seats are painted and in. Dash and steering wheel almost finished. Truck body is primed now, waiting for it to dry a couple of days before I can start laying down the white. For now, I'm researching electronics so I can get those on order.
Thanks, Chrishttps://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-T...09_194546.jpeg |
Re: My First Truck Build
Installed my front bumper mount from Integy today. That is a nice piece and will definately be on future builds.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-W...11_190723.jpeg I also test fit the cab. Had the white all done, but I need to do some work to the hood where I plugged the A/C holes. After the test fit I'm leaning toward leaving it all white vs. painting the fenders and cab/sleeper roof blue. What do you think? (Kind of crappy cell phone picture) https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0...211_204822.jpg Thanks, Chris |
Re: My First Truck Build
Hey chris, sharp looking ride mate! Loving the blue chassis but then I am biased when it comes to colors "pop" like that. If you're guna stay with a white cab maybe match your chassis color with similar pinstripes? Its amazing how one well placed stripe can totally change the attitude of your ride. Great build mate keep up the awesome work...
Max |
Re: My First Truck Build
I agree with maxtaz. A little pinstripe to match the frame will really set off the white. Your build is looking great!! This is a build that I will be watching!!
|
Re: My First Truck Build
I looked it over pretty hard and decided to stay with my origional plan. Hood sides were sanded so before i repainted them the fenders were painted blue. Couple of days worth of dry time and they can be masked and the hood finished up. Then on to the blue on the roof.
Thanks for the comments. Chris |
Re: My First Truck Build
do you have an exact name of that shade of blue i like it alot and wan't to do a future build with it thanks.
|
Re: My First Truck Build
Now with blue fenders. I also did some work to the hood, so a couple of days for the white to dry and then mask to blue the roof. Hopefully clear coating done by mid next week.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-k...216_200133.jpg The blue is a Krylon Color Master Gloss Global Blue over white primer. I thought this would give me a tougher paint job, while the color is nice I won't use it again. Chris |
Re: My First Truck Build
okay cool thanks why wouldnt' you use it again just curious and thanks again your trucks looking sick.
|
Re: My First Truck Build
It was a real pain to get a quality paint job out of. It looks nice, but not quite what I want. I will say I started with the same color in the Dual Paint & Primer series, that really didn't work. Had to strip my frame twice, the third time I changed to the Color Master series and primed first, that worked much better.
|
Re: My First Truck Build
The blue is now done, and I'm happy I stuck with my plan and did it. Couple of days of dry time so I can handle it and I will begin the detail painting.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x...218_202103.jpg Thanks, Chris |
Re: My First Truck Build

Re: My First Truck Build
Update, new grill and bumper from Russ are on. Wasn't sure about painting the black in the grill but went for it and glad I did. Air cleaners from IHB are great. A few tidbits from Evilbay to round up it's current state. Drive shaft arrives tomorrow and I and drive it around! Light kit coming soon.
A few more things to do as time progresses, but at least it is running. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-e...322_191203.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y...322_191253.jpg Thanks, Chris |
Re: My First Truck Build
Great looking truck! The paint scheme turned out great. Great attention to detail and really cool upgrades. Thanks for sharing!
|
Re: My First Truck Build
yes sir... very well done... "2 thumbs up" on your build!!
|
Re: My First Truck Build
Thanks guys. I have parts being collected for a winter upgrade. There is a lot you can do with these trucks to really make them your own creation.
Chris |
Re: My First Truck Build
Awesome work, the paint scheme really tops it- very inspiring build.
|
Re: My First Truck Build
Whoop whoop! Looks good!
Cheers |
