Tonka Winnebago
I picked up a Tonka Winnebago camper in sort of rough shape at an antique store a few months ago and have been staying late at work building parts to make it RC. Thought you guys might like to see what I have built so far. Still need to make some motor mounts, body mounts, a new roof, servo mount, install lighting, and repaint it.

Re: Tonka Winnebago
Looks great so far. Are you going to repaint the RV exterior?

Thanks. I am planning on repainting the RV once I get the frame finished up. Still need to drill some holes in the bottom of the body for the mounting bolts so I want to make sure I get all that done before I start painting it. I like the green color that it all ready is so I think I'm going to try to find something that's close to that when I redo it. |
Re: Tonka Winnebago
Been working different hours at work for the past month it seems so I have not had much time to work on the camper until yesterday so here is an update. I got the lift blocks for the front suspension finished up and mounted and I also machined a few plates that will go where the differential mounts to the leaf springs since I did not like the idea of having the bolts directly contacting the plastic differential case. Next steps are make a few shock mounts, servo mounts and drill and tap the holes in the rear shock mount cross member. I also would like to try and find a pair of mirrors from one of the Tamiya semi trucks and get some mudflaps with the Winnebago W on them.

I do plan to repaint the exterior. Want to keep the same color scheme with the green and white mainly because I like it but also because it matches the replacement decals I bought. I'll try to get some more updates and pictures when I make some more progress |

Re: Tonka Winnebago
Made a little progress today after work. Boss disappeared when my shift was over so I was not able to ask permission to stay after and machine a few parts but I did get a chance to sit down and draw out a few prints to make the last couple parts. Going to try to stay after for an hour or two tomorrow and get a big chunk of the last major parts made up.

Re: Tonka Winnebago
looking like a solid build, nice project.

Re: Tonka Winnebago
Made some progress today on machining the body mounts. Sorry no pictures this time (forgot my phone at home today) I only had 1 hour to work before the boss went home so I did not get them finished but I do have half of the body mounts machined. Will try to get those finished up Monday and maybe by the end of the week I'll be close to having a running model.

Re: Tonka Winnebago
Had some free time today so I worked on building the shower area around the bathtub and built an accordion door for the bathroom. They are not done yet and just held together with masking tape so I could see how they would look and tweak them before I glued anything but here is what I have so far. What do you guys think?

Re: Tonka Winnebago
Made some progress on the tonka Winnebago project. Bad pictures but I made the body mounts, installed some cross members so I have a place to mount the shocks, and figured out a few measurements to make the rest of the parts. Really close now. Just need to machine the shock and battery mounts and drill and tap a few holes. Then it's just finish the detailing in the interior, wire up the lighting and repaint the body.

Re: Tonka Winnebago
Made some major progress the past couple weeks. Got everything on the frame done except the battery mounts and the front shock mounts (still need to finalize the design on them before I machine them) and had the parts anodized black. So here are the first set of good non blury pictures of the frame

Re: Tonka Winnebago
Would it be possible to fix the pictures in the start of the thread?
It's a nice looking rolling frame, and the laydown trans is a great idea. |
