CAT 988F Series II Wheel Loader

I have wanted a Wheel Loader for some time now so I decided to try my hand at building one. I have the tracked loader but I wanted some thing to load a little faster and have more reach so I decided to go with the 988 in 1/14 scale.

Here is what I am attempting to build.

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/s...r/cat988f2.jpg

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/s...r/cat988f4.jpg

Here is what I have so far. The Mammoth tires are the right size for this build in 1/14 scale so now I am waiting on the rim builder to make my new one's.:D

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/s...r/100_0976.jpg

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/s...r/100_0977.jpg

I have had electronics in it and ran it around the garage. So far it seams like it will have plenty of power now I just have to make it look like some thing.

Thanks for looking.

You have been growing with ingenuity and complexity with each build Travis. Really looks nice, made your own transfer case out of delrin I see.?.? It's nice to see it come alive after the discussion in Indy. Keep it up, I'm sure I'll steal some ideas for my next complex machinery build. That poor guy in a cage PA is everyone's friend, he just can't say no,can he?

Thanks Ben and and you are right Steve does have a hard time saying no.

I am noticing in my pics I have the frame to high on the front axle so in the morning I will disassemble it and machine it down some to make the frame sit level. Funny how you notice things more when you look at it in a pic.

I also got my order from Micro Mark today, new vice, clamp set, and true inch conversion for the mill. They were out of stock on the R8 Collet set but I will be getting that as soon as it is back in stock as well as smaller tool makers vice.

I like these older Cats. The cabs are neat, with the triangle windows.

That's an interesting drivetrain and frame. So you've got what looks like Axial axles, but you made one with a pass through input/output shaft, and you are using that as the mounts to allow for axle oscillation? That's actually a pretty cool idea. I don't think I would have thought of something like that. How's it work? Just a couple bronze/oilite bushings on the input/output shafts to allow oscillation? Kind of surprised there is enough shaft left to hook up the driveshaft yoke.

Thanks I had to come up with something different to get it all to fit and work.

Nate you are right they are Axial axles and the shaft was to short. The good thing about these axles is that they use a pin drive pinion so I just made a longer shaft to make room for the pivot. The other side is a Traxxas Stampede front axle shaft, I didn't need an output or input just a pivot point.

Thanks to all for looking.

Thanks Reg

very nice work i can dig that lol i also think aluminum axels would be a good idea for a lil weight and strength for pickin up those heavy loads of dirt or crushed rubber very cool good start can't wait to see more

Cool project Travis and nice start.

Great idea on the large size too because it is easier to load everything.

Nice choice on the loader Trav. I think your going to enjoy scratch building equipment more than trucks and trailers. There is more challenges because you can't just buy the parts you need, you most build them.

I still like building trucks and I have made the trucks more complicated these days as well. Don't worry though I am collecting parts for a dozer as well and so far I have the tracks, gearmotors, and ESC, not much but a start but I am getting there. I am also working on getting the funds for one of the excavators RC4WD is selling.

Hi Travis,

Excellent start... it looks fairly capable in the video too, near the end it went up the step very easy. Looking forward to seeing this is progress.

Very good, Travis! Are you going with hydraulics for the work equipment, or going to surprize us with something new - ceramic magnet cylinders or nano-technology gearmotors? :p:rolleyes: Anyway, very cool beginning.

It's always fun driving around a bare bones chassis, isn't it? Something about seeing it move under it's own power for the first time. Cool.

Yes they are.:D In 1/14 scale that is only a 3.5in wide arm. I want to be sure this thing will hold up over time.

It will hold up and also look good. Some people don't use heavy enough material and it just don't look right. But if I know you this thing will look and perform great.
