Simple Pete Daycab

Hey guys, haven't been around for a while, but with the work season over I am finding that I have some extra time to build. I picked up this rig from my good buddy Rod (Stepside) at the ECMT Mack Show for a great deal. The plan is to keep it relatively simple, and have it complete for the next ECMT meet in march. I'll just be doing a few simple body mods.
This is what she looked like before
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...ps1db76ff7.jpg

Then after some "negotiations" I was left with this
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...pscb439022.jpg

While checking in I picked up one of these puppies
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...psd6e7530c.jpg

Shortly after I arrived at this
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps7f30c2f8.jpg
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps8dd94b45.jpg

Then I removed the headlights and framed the rear of the can for the insert

http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps8bd61ff8.jpg
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps4e2576bb.jpg

Next came the rear insert to close up the cab

http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...psa86b66a6.jpg
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps990f60dd.jpg

Then I removed the rivets on the hood for a more of a fibreglass hood look. I also started to fill the holes from the air cleaners
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps72c15f02.jpg

Thinking of loosing the steps and moving the tanks up like this, show a little frame
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...psa3814c37.jpg
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps2d21c68d.jpg

Still got quite a bit of sanding left to do... But I guess that's just the name of the game with body mods

Thanks for taking a look!

No, however I was almost "mounted like a deer".. It was good to see you too Alfy, I'll have to post some pics of the boat!

Thanks for the kind words guys, I've been looking at a set of toolboxes, but can't quite find what I'm looking for, everything I've found is just slightly too big

Re: Simple Pete Daycab

Today I started looking at how I want to do the electronics. I swapped out the standard steering servo that was on the truck for a hitec 645. Then I started laying out the electronics. The fxr is most definatly staying, however I'm not sure about the radio. The truck came with a futaba 2.4g skysport, but I'm thinking about swapping it out for a dx3e (another awesome radio... Just wish it was computerised, but for 100 bucks with an rx I can't complain...). For the battery a nice big lipo will fit between the frame rails, I'm not sure I want, or need, one that big, but that's defiatly where it's going. This leaves me with a totally empty cab floor for light components. I am also up in the air about wether I want a gru or a smaller pinion and higher turn motor (pinion and motor is much cheaper...)

Re: Simple Pete Daycab

This morning I did a mock up with the new grill I got from Russ, I really like it!
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps9865e29c.jpg

I also looked at how I want to do the exhaust, I don't really want to mount it behind the cab, so I'm thinking I'm going to have to notch the bottom of the cab, or make the tanks (much) shorter
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps56ac556f.jpg

I also need to do something about this gap. I could move the fenders forward.... But that's more work than I'd like to do. I'm thinking a wrap around bumper like that on Travis' custom Pete build would fill it nicely along with shortening up the bumper mount
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps8fc46a5f.jpg

Whose got ideas?

MACK Daddy 11-02-2013 08:49 AM

Re: Simple Pete Daycab

Wrap around bumper is a good idea....personally I would like the stacks behind the cab if your gonna use those fuel tanks

Re: Simple Pete Daycab

I'd say wrap around bumper. Or mod the bumper mount back toward the cab and buy one of IH Steve Taxas square bumpers. Your truck is looking good, keep up the good work!!!

Tamiya Cowboy 11-02-2013 10:56 AM

Re: Simple Pete Daycab

Looks great Arioch.. Idea for you on the bumper pretty easy fix cut off the stock bumper mounts flush with the cross member and use a piece of 1/2x1/2 alum angel mounted to the bottom of your frame then mount your new bumper to it I do this on many trucks to get the bumper just right on a truck.. You can see this on my day cab pete and kw and my IH 9670 build..

Re: Simple Pete Daycab

Thanks Paul, I think I'll give that a try! Also if I remember right you use a 55t motor and smaller pinion that is equivalent to a 4:1 reduction, is that correct? If so what size pinion do I need?

Talk w/ Steve or Benny as to pipes. I really, really like how Benny mounted his fat stacks on his latest creation:

Re: Simple Pete Daycab

Rod, don't get me wrong, Benny's truck looks incredible, but that's just not my style.

Paul, even I'm amazed at how close I am...

Today's update, primer dried so I took the chance to mock up my new air cleaners I got off eBay, I really liked the light bar, but the air cleaner itself left something to be desired.... Overall I think they look pretty good though

I have a few more parts on their way that should help this build stand out :)

Got another package from Russ today, I had him make up a pair of toolboxes, and I think they turned out pretty sweet!

http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...psc2781304.jpg

Also debating how I want to do the roof lights, which do you guys like? I'm leaning toward option 2

Option 1
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...psf11b51b6.jpg

Option 2
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/t...psf48e1604.jpg

I think I'm going to go with wedico roof lights, unless I can find some nicer ones...

Lovin' the updates!!! Any idea if lenses will fit those Chinese air cleaners? I'm really diggin' the updates! What's he plan for a bumper? Or is it in the mail!!?

Re: Simple Pete Daycab

Arioch...

Looking good man... Go with the wedico lights they look better than the tamiya ones they are a little larger than tamiya and look better on the cab.. Also 9 lights look better then 10 for some reason a odd number always looks better.. The air cleaners are nice I see what you mean maybe get some screen from Steve and warp that around the top will help and the chain box steps look great nice work...

Roadmasters 11-08-2013 10:55 PM

Re: Simple Pete Daycab

The air cleaners are already off to be fixed ;) I don't think lenses will fit in them, but I might try to get my hands on a few to try it out. That would make them perfect.

For the bumper... Haven't ordered anything yet but leaning toward a screw less wrap around from Steve.

Right now I'm trying to get my self to spend the $50 for the roof lights....

I need to mount the headlights too, anyone have tips on that? I have the square Pete style from PMD

Thanks for the comments guys!

Great looking truck. That grille is nice! Something a little different. Just smooth and clean. I like the air breather light bars too. Swapping out that stock bumper will pull it all together! I'll keep an eye on this build.

Thanks guys, I'm really liking how its turning out. I had my doubts when I first started the body work!

Today was pretty productive, got the roof lights mounted, and drilled holes for the rear cab lights.
