on a side note : those who where @ cabin fever saw this roll down the side of the pile after Scott distracted me while working on top the high wall . Any how notice the FWD slant in the ROPs . I thought it look a little bit more then what it originally had  So took a closer look , sure enough it bent on the roll over

With the roll-over, you need to have the ROPS replaced in order to stay "legal". Somewhere, I saw a scale-sized OSHA/MSHA inspector lurking around, just waiting to nail you with a citation! But, you might be exempt since there is no operator in the cab.?.?

I really appreciate the self-made hydraulic components on this machine - great job!

At our Brownsville,PA show,
A bystander who knew MSHA rules commented to me that our haul roads needed a berm:cop:. Later we found that true when one of Smallhaul's dump trucks took a trip over the side LOL.

Steve, it's an amazing job you did! I'm looking to buy a such construction machine for a while, but you greatly inspired me, and now i'm seriously thinking about building a such machine like yours. I read through the whole thread but didn't find anything about wheels of that size. May i ask, where can we get them?

ihbuilder 09-30-2013 08:47 PM

Re: 990 cat loader

Hi , Abel ,thank you :) The tires are from the tamiya mammoth dump truck which is no longer in production . Do to that they're getting hard to find . I have a mold drawn up ready to machine to make my own (when i get to it :() 90% of the machine is self made including the wheels .

AbelVincze 09-30-2013 08:58 PM

Re: 990 cat loader

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm also investigating how a self molded tire can be made. I can't wait to see your's finished:)

Re: 990 cat loader

Steve, can you share some info about the gear motors?
First: as i read in most of the gear motor specifications, if the output shaft is blocked, it can damage the gears. Let's assume, that the shaft is never blocked cause it have enough power to drive the big wheel, but what happens if you turn (left or right) while the machine is not moving, are the wheels turning as expected, or are they still and sliding on the floor? (hope you can understand what i mean).
Secondly can the wheels turned by hand (slowly ofcourse), or could this also damage the gears?
(the 2 questions are the same, i know:))

I know this mostly depends on the gear ratio you're using, as i calculated, to get the max speed (1:1 -> 22 km/h, 1:14,5 -> 1,5 km/h), a max output of 50 rpm is needed. So i think, the best is a lower rmp motor as base to get the lowest gear ratio possible...

Re: 990 cat loader

Abel , I didn't go with the 4 gear motor set up in the end . Even they where to flimsy for the size and weight Of the machine . I went with a differential set up which seems to be holding up quite well :) I don't have any experience on using a gear motor at each wheel yet :o

Re: 990 cat loader

Steve, ok thanks, i thought you've tried it... For some reason i don't trust these gear motors either...
