"Prototype" CAT Wheel Dozer

5:1 Planetary Trans
+1.8:1 & .7:1 (2 speed) Helios transfer case up high under the cab,
+2.14 transfer sase down low,
+25:1 Losi crawler axles and 2.2 Mud Bashers
+pounds of ballast
= mega torque and traction

It's gonna be an ugly, mean machine that'll shake the earth when the steel-reinforced Bruder blade hits the ground!

Some spy shots...

I like it so far. That's a unique twist, not many have made wheeled dozers. I know they Do exist in the 1:1 world, but are anomalies.

Something like 481.5 : 1 reduction? And 187.25

Already looks cool, this is going to be interesting to watch.

Thanks

Yes lots of reduction!

It seems about right(?) in low for pushing dirt and in high for travelling/backing up...

gonna reassign the high/low to a switch as the dial is a pain

The video doesn't work for me. It just sends me to MY YouTube video editing page.

Re: "Prototype" CAT Wheel Dozer

In the video you'll see it needs a lot more ballast if its ever going to push dirt.

at least double or triple it has now

I don't think its worth pursuing any further cause the axles/tires probably wont be able to take the weight.

Oh well it was fun experimenting.

If the gears in your axles are metal I'd try and add some weight. Tires if they sack out always could add some spray foam to make them harder and able to take the weight. For adding ballast you have lots of room to add lead even fill tires with bb's then fill with foam add weight and make tires more rigid. I wouldn't give up as I could see with a few more tinker time on the bench it will work great. If not pm I'll take it off of your hands

Re: "Prototype" CAT Wheel Dozer

I'd probably treat it like a crawler, start with 1/2 to 1 pound of lead solder wrapped around each rim, and add from there. Losi crawler axles can stand up to a bunch of weight. Ya need weight, your sidewalls aren't even 'aired down' yet.

I agree with this 100%. When I converted (The FIRST ONE I tried) the Bruder D5 dozer, I DIDN't add weight. It wouldn't grab enough traction to get outta it's own way. The SECOND one, the one I'm working on now, I added weight. It performs MUCh better this time around.

ALSO, with the weight(s) being in/on the tire(s) the gears & bearings WON'T have stress on them, as they would if the weight was mounted in/on the body of the machine.

Re: "Prototype" CAT Wheel Dozer

If it doesn't like dozer blade, maybe try out a belly blade like a grader?

http://www.scale4x4rc.org/forums/showthread.php?t=83602

Belly and an extendable wing, should look similar to some airport Runway Snowplows

I thought it did pretty well for itself Paul ... a wheel dozer will never push like a tracked vehicle, but it's versatility for speed blading gives it a unique purpose. ;)

I've already got several projects on the go as it is, but I've also been dreaming for awhile of a project like this too with a belly blade using Blackwell axles & a tamiya 3spd, make the frame from 1/2" square steel bar... thanx for the visual inspiration of posting your creation.
