DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

Hi
I've just got me a new project.
this time it has a deadline. normaly it takes years for me to finish a truck.
Now I'm going to finish 2 trucks befor october.
one tractor trailer, and a 4x4 tipper. both are from the 60s.
the cab's are going to be build from cartboard with PU-resin, I like the way that works for me.
The picture's made by charles burki, used in the official daf advertising are going to be my inspiration.
I'll add those pictures later.

the build is going to be posted on internet. but thats something I need te learn to make.

The cardboard process is not often seen for a master. I have seen it on other euro forums. Nice vid of the early stages. I am big fan of your bus build.

This cab I had laying around. From an earier project that had ended before IT realy started. The reason was I couldend find the right parts. Now I think I found those.

Hi
just had some more work done on the torpedocab.
I closed the roof. and made it into 3 layers
http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/DD16961.JPG

also made the seats.

http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/DD16962.JPG

with the batterybox. als some room for electronics

http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/DD16963.JPG

and I have done some work on the outside.

http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/DD16965.JPG

http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/DD16966.JPG

I have to keep going on the truck. I Think I want a "Time correct" trailer build and rolling for the same event. luckely those trailers were simpel.
and it's going to look like the one in the picture. only the "long" version. thats looks a bit nicer in the layout of the sideboards.
I'll show the drawings next time

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

it seems I've deleted the "short" trailer already.

this is the longe version. the difference for the sale model's was less than an inch. but the shorter one had 4 side boards on the site the longer one has 5 side boards.

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

That looks like an interesting way of building model trucks!

So if I understand it correctly, you are saturating the cardboard with resin and then sand it smooth?

As for the trailer, I know it is still beginning stages. Are you going to re-inforce with metal beams or is it going to be all wood?

PetervR 06-13-2016 07:45 AM

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

Hi.
yes the cardboard is saturated with resin. actually PU-lacker. it works just fine om the rounder cab models. and don't forget to saturate from the outside and the inside. or it will be curvey.

the strength is better dan a cab build up from sheets of plastic. lighter that resin casts. and it's sheap. (the calculated butget for this model tracktor and trailer. ready to roll. including radio and battery. under €300,-)

After sanding and putty. it will be spraypainted with car paint. is chould look just fine.

the trailer will I'm not going to use is as a skateboard. the load that will be on it will not be more than a few kilo. so for the loads it will not be nessary to be re-inforced.
from experianse I will re-inforce the pivet-point in the suspension. and the kingpin will be in the center of an aluminium plate. large enough for the fith-wheel.
the side's will have a brass strip, there just for some soldering to be able to have the sideboard's on.

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

Peter,

This will be a very unique truck and you are doing an awesome job making it. I am also interested in this technique of building cabs with cardboard. You've answered a few of my questions already with your posts but I have a lot more. So here goes:

Based on the photos are you using wood glue to initially glue the cardboard together?

PU-lacker is that the standard polyurethane that is used to cover wood items and you are brushing it on? How many coatings?

You said the roof is 3 layers, do you try to make the cab a certain number of layers or thickness?

Do you wet the cardboard at all to aid in bending/shaping?

What putty or filler do you use?

Thanks in advance. Sorry for so many questions...

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

Hi.
I'll try to anser al those quesions. The first idea to build like this was an accident. I was casting a cab with resin in a silicone mold. And some of it dropped onto some peaces of cardboard. After a few minutes it was set and it was much stronger than the drops of resin that dropped next to the cardboard. So the idea was born. I first atempted to use the 2 component resin. At the " daf 33 small van" post here I used the 2 component resin. The idea worked. But it sets to fast. Also that cardboard I used there was bought. 1mm thick. And not that absorbent. Then my wife wanded me to take the trash out. And I saved some of the stuff I use now from the trash. It's 0,5mm thick. And more absorbent that the cardboard I used first.

Woodglue. Yes, why, no special reason. I even use it as treadlock.for the nuts and bolts.

The specs of the PU lacker I have to look it up. It's a PU that reacts to the air to set. And if i'm right it's also used for yachtdeks.

I apply it with a qtip. And as must as it can take. Up to the point it stays on top. A second coat will stay on top.
The inside is done in a later time. But must not be forgotten.

The 3 layers are for stability during handeling. 1,5mm togetter
Where I need to sand the shape more layers are put on.

I don't wet the cardboard for bending it. I use my nails to bend it into shape. If the fibers of the cardboard get loose. The soke up the lacker even better. So thats not a bad thing.

After the lacker I first use "plastic primer" than primer filler. Like the one I used on my car. Than its time for the car putty. I use a one component. From a dutch brand. When thats set and sanded. I use sprayputty from the same brand. Last sanding with grand 600. And after that car spray paint.
If there are more questions I'll be happy to anser them

Hat off! Hard to believe this truck started out as scrap cardboard! :jaw:

well it is "a piece of scarp"
even the stuff I used for the indicator lights lay on the ground next to a pole on a parkinglot

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

HI.
just had a good weekend of modeling. just not that good in taking picture's
I had put the resin over the otherparts of the cab. and it needed to set.
in the dryingtime. I started the tipperbox of the 4x4.

http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/daf16002061.JPG
http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/daf16002062.JPG
made uit of aluminium and some wood.

the semitrailer got some work to

http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/daf162061.JPG
basecally ready for the axles and wheels.

the cab after the resin was dry. got his plastic primer, primer/filler, putty, primer, and some sanding
http://www.mtc-techteam.nl/dd162062.JPG

I also decided on the "look" of the 2 trucks. the tractor trailer is supposed to look like it's just at the end of restauration. the 4x4 is going to look like its in use for some years, but maintained, and not completly worn. so flat paint. some rust. maybe a cracked window. no big dents, strait fenderd. maybe a torn mudflap. that kind of stuff.

Re: DAF torpedo front truck and front steer truck

Great job on that tipper box! Will look great "used" - Still hard to believe that cab is made of cardboard. :)
