Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

Hello,

today I'd like to start a thread about my custom build Kenworth C509 as australian roadtrain. I try to create a scale truck, but I can't promise.

The only difference will be that I want to add fuel tanks of a T909.

Because of my lousy english, I'd like to speak via pictures with some comments.

Actually the build is stopped to finish my rebuild of my Knight Hauler, but after it is done, the C509 will be continued with high priority.

When I started the project, I bought a King Hauler as the base kit. But after some changes to the cabine, I saw that the needed modification would be more work than building it from the scatch.

The base for the truck is a 8x8 frame.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-j-1f0e.jpg

So I started the cabine with the mud wings.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-18-17e6.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-1a-6c83.jpg

Because of the fact that the bowl was round, the mud wings are not completely in parallel. :(

After this, I started with the hood

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-1b-d9d4.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-1l-9f61.jpg

After that the saw was taken into action to cut off the part that will be fix at the cabine. The hood will be openable.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-1k-b53b.jpg

After this was done I started to build the cabine. The doors will be openable.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-1r-44f6.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-1u-fc49.jpg

Parallel I added the cabs for the lambs.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-20-7cbb.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-2c-9778.jpg

After that I started to build the sleeper.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-2g-93db.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-2h-c7e1.jpg

So far so good, the PS works were finished for that moment.

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

After the sleeper was finished in its format, I wanted to be able to open and close the sleeper doors. They will hide the On/Off switch, the charcher contacts, connection points for the sound module and custom build computer boards.

My first idea was to create lock bars moved by bowden cables.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-2x-6974.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-30-65b9.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-33-a3c6.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-34-2723.jpg

The doors were fastened with brass hinges.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-36-698d.jpg

The next step was the control block

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-37-7f6f.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-38-7327.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-39-5fd0.jpg

But the hinges set on the outside wasn't very nice, I wanted to hide them. So I tested other hinges that were fixed from behind.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-3j-c8ff.jpg

Horror !!!

Because of the fact the the PS plates are 2mm thick, the doors can't be opened with a standard hinge without a hige gap between sleeper and dor. So I started to design custom hinges that can open and the door can slide out a bit.

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

After finishing all the work I realized, that the bowding cables are having to much curves, it's not working easily. So a complete redesign was needed. In addition, the hinges are too flexible, the door is hanging down when it's open.

So I started to design new hinges.

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

Thanx guys ;)

Let me update you with the actual last part, the grill. Yesterday it was too dark on the balcony to go on typing.

The grill was my first project with bigger brass elements. Some parts could only be soldered with a flame. After finishing the frame we had a bit smokey smell in our living room. :D

First I folded the upper frame element to fit to the hood contour.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4g-1c9a.jpg

The edges are additionally fasteded with a thread rod.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4i-0640.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4f-2a79.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4l-bd4c.jpg

After the frame was finished I started to build the grill elements. Here's a picture of the procedure started from left to the right.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4p-9766.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4q-7e77.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-4r-5878.jpg

In addition I started a sub project. The saddle plate handling had to be modified that way, that the mechanism can't be seen. So I tried to find a solution with a micro servo under the plate.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-66-45fb.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-64-ca46.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-65-3b8a.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-67-63dc.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-69-c0e1.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-6a-ec8c.jpg

A short visdeo how it works

But after finishing I found out that the servo can't be hidden completely. If I create a brass plate to hide it, it would block the plate if it tilts to the front. So the road train will get the same mechanism as the Knight Hauler.

Your grille looks amazing! Did you file and sand the grille surround's inner contour after it was soldered together, or before hand? You have so much patience!

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

Thanx to all ;)

@ Nathan: Yes, it was filed and saned after the soldering was completed. It was a job for round about 4 hours. After had my hands were no longer usable for the evening and my wife grumbled about the brass dust around my working table ;)

But it was definitely worth the work.

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

Hi All,

after the last project "Black Devil" and Trailer is finished, I stepped over to the roadtrain again.

First I had a review of the work done so far and I got a shock, because the year on the sideboard wasn't good for the styrene. The front was distorted, the mud wings were no longer in shape.

So I decided to renew the mud wings. Last time I formed them using a bowl. The result were mud wings that are not really in the right angle.

OK, let's start, take the cutter and cut them off... :(

To make them new I needed a cylinder with the correct radius. So I took a paper roll and wrapped wall paper around it until it had the correct radius.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-f0-6942.jpg

Next step was to form a styrene plate around it...

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-f1-8542.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-f3-f4be.jpg

The front of the haule got another layer of styrene to make it more stable.

The roll of styrene is cut and sanded, the front is OK now...

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-f5-d64a.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-f8-df87.jpg

gismow 11-15-2014 04:34 PM

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

The next step was to correct the front of the cabine. The haule didn't fit to it anymore. So I removed the splashback (???) to insert a new one.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fc-5ea1.jpg

In addition I wanted to seperate the front windows. So I added a thin layer of styrene and glued the middle stay from the back.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fe-5737.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fg-16c2.jpg

The result:

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fh-7dcd.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fi-8144.jpg

During the work I saw that a glueline began to break so I had to glue a stabeling plate behind it.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fj-97e8.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fk-647b.jpg

While the stabeling plate was drying I had a look at the doors. I had the idea to set the glass by using window seals.

So I cutted and sanded a form from a CD cover and mounted it into the door...

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fl-ed26.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fm-c75b.jpg

I also added a new splashback.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fn-8d34.jpg

The seal in the dor looked nice, so I tested it in the front.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fo-ccb1.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fp-01f7.jpg

But I also tried an alternative. A window glass with a small black frame glued on it. The window was sanded exactly in the form of the frame so that I could set it into the hole.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fq-7f24.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fr-94c7.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fs-f387.jpg

What's your opinion ? Which solution shall I use ?

gismow 11-15-2014 04:38 PM

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

Next step was to place the doors in the cabine. I used the same technique as I did in the sleeper.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-ft-5e38.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fu-15de.jpg

A small video...

gismow 11-15-2014 04:51 PM

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

After finishing the review of the cabine I could assemble the haule with the cabine. It was needed to reconstruct the lower cabine part at the back of the mud wings.

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fw-6e27.jpg

No I can start to reconstruct the sides of the mug wings. Glue a part, let it dry for a day, glue the next, etc...

It takes a lot of time but it gave a nice result....

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fv-11b9.jpg

The acutual state at the moment :

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fx-1bb9.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-fy-3a07.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-g0-a9a6.jpg

http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/knqp-g1-58ae.jpg

Next step will be to glue the lower parts of the cabine to the backside of the mud wings. The cover for the headlights must be set again.

After that I can cut the mud wings at the front and the back to bring them to the correct side. Than I can seperate the mud wings into the haule part and the cabine part.

Let's wait and see, I'll keep you informed.

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

Thanx crisis time,
thanx Terry,

the real seal is a 4mm seal in H-format ***Click here***. The shop also offers 2,5mm thick seals, but they are too small. My cabine is 1,5mm thick and the 2,5mm seal only works up to 1mm thickness of the window frame.

The fake seal is a 0,5 Millimeter thick frame of styrene painted black with an edding and glued on the CD cover piece.

But this is only a test, the final window will be made of clear styrene (1 Millimetre) and a 0,5 Millimetre styrene frame. On the clear styrene my glue will hold the frame.

The CD cover plastic does not react on the glue.

Re: Custom build of a Kenworth C509 as autralian roadtrain

I think the H-seal looks great in the door windows. As for the front it seems a bit out of proportion and I like the black frame much better. Other than that amazing work on this so far! I have been doing a lot with styrene lately and am jealous of your skills great job Gizmow!

Hi...

After 3 years sleeping in the cellar, I decided to reactivate the project again. I hope I can finish it this time.

The sleeper is no longer usable, the sides of the sleeper are buckled. I'll rebuild it but first I adjusted the hood. It's now fitting to the cab.

The front of the cab had to be rebuild, it was too thick. The new plate I'm creating at the moment is 1mm thick so that I can use smaller seals for the windows.

The old plate has been removed, the styrene was no longer usable.
