New Scania Build

Nothing exciting here, just haven’t posted anything new here in a while. We have a Next Gen Scania R450 6x4 at work similar to the first pic below. I thought that would be an easy subject, box stock build, quick and simple, something different than my usual stuff, yeah right! Got the kit and in the process of waiting on Tower to get them in stock I did some research and figured out there isn’t a body panel on the 1:1 truck that matches the kit. So much for for quick and easy! Wasn’t even going to paint the chassis since the 1:1 is black, that’s not working out either, to many shiny things on the chassis in the kit :lol::lol:.
Any way here’s a couple pictures from the build start.

That's right, there is not a single similar panel outside or inside, newest vs older Scania cab;) Just curious, you mean to say there is a new 1:1 Scania in the US?

Pretty interesting. I know Scania did a try at the North American marked with their trucks back in the 80's, sold a few but did put it on hold after short time. Is it a 'demo truck' at your work, Scania now giving it a new chance breaking through in the US and offer their trucks for anyone to purchase over there?
Anyway, that's a sidetrack, good luck with your build here,

Re: New Scania Build

Spent some time in the shop today, got my planetary transmission, pulled the 750 motor off of it and put a 35 turn crawler motor on it. Spent most of the time making the motor mount.
I’m doing 2 things on this build that I don’t normally do, I’m putting bearings in it and I didn’t lock the axles. I also got those done today and hopefully will get everything at least primed tomorrow.
This truck might have a little different activity than just going to meets.

Got some sleep then got back at it. Finished the drive axles, mounted them, made the drive shaft and bolted it in, checked the angle of the dangle so nothing would contact with the steer suspension fully collapsed and rear suspension articulated. Since all was good I finished mounting the motor/transmission mount. Started taking it back apart for painting.

I've always found the appearance of these Scanias to be quite appealing Kent, lots of character within its curves.

What's the ratio in that gearhead? The speed be like a casual walk?

You've peaked my curiosity

Joe, as purchased this motor is 313 rpm, 27:1 ratio. Now with me changing the motor I’m not sure if that changes those numbers or not, never really thought about it. They come in 13 different rpm’s available from 12 to 1621. I’ve tried 3 of them. The reason I change the motors was simply an experiment. The motors that come with them are 12v, I run 7.2v and they seemed a little lethargic so I thought why not try a stock Tamiya can or crawler motor. It will be inter resting to see how this one does with the 35 turn.
I’m hoping we get the truck rodeo going again at our Lebanon meet, it would be a good chassis for that and some things going on at work could get interesting since I work for Navistar.

Took the axles, drive shaft and motor out. Painted everything satin black and reassembled it touching up the screws where needed. Built the 5th wheel, looking at getting an adjustable slide plate for it.

Is that chassis shorter than the globe? Or is it just the wheelbase is shorter?

TRUCKMAKER 03-04-2018 06:55 PM

Re: New Scania Build

I’ve never built a globe but this is a very short chassis! Which is ok, that’s kind of what I wanted. Here you go Joe, best I can show you.

I was going to update this but it appears the img hosting site I started using must have went the way of photobucket! Guess I’ll look for a new site.

Postimg.org got blocked from using the .org extension. They are now at postimg.cc
All your photos etc are still available.

If one clicks on the blue square with the ? and open in new tab, just replace the .org in the URL with .cc and the photos show up.

So now that the photo issues have been fixed onward, I have most of the paint work done, now I’m sorting out the MFC-01 that was removed from a truck I got in a trade deal. Slowly installing it in the chassis as I go.

I just happen to see in the beginning that's you made the driveshaft. How did you get the spline in the brass? Or is it a purchased piece? Looks good , I like the color and I may have to look into one of these,,,,

Hi Cooper, here are the parts I use. The female/internal splined shaft fits snuggly into the brass tube. I cut this about 1/2” back from the knuckle and I run a little sand paper inside the brass and the out side of the shaft, put a little CA in the brass and slide the knuckle in one end and the remaining piece in the other end of the brass. I mark the brass so I know how deep the non knuckle piece went in then I use a small set screw, drill an under sized hole in each end and let it cut its own thread when I install it. It’s just to keep it from spinning. Put the set screw close to the mark so the external splined shaft doesn’t hit it. I’ve posted this on FaceBook and some where on here before but couldn’t find it. Hope it helps others they are quick easy and inexpensive, I never spun one yet but doesn’t mean it can’t happen lol.
