Help Crane builders

Hi,
I wonder if any one can help me?. I am building a Leibherr LTM 1030 2.1 crane, and cant figure out how to get the boom to extend. I understand the full size principal, but cant see how to get a 1/14 scale boom to extend.
Most articles I have found seem to miss out the extending boom ,other than to show it working

Are you stuck on Telescoping the hydraulic boom, or Swinging the lattice boom onto end of other boom?

Is your model running hydraulics, or are you doing it electrically?

watsonbill:

RC Modders did a series of YouTube videos on his Bruder CAT Telehandler conversion. There are several dealing with just the boom, including the boom extension. This is electric control, not hydraulic.

On my Manitou conversion, https://madmodder.net/index.php/topic,13026.0.html I plan on using a length of 5mm 3D printer leadscrew, but then I'm only trying to animate one section of the boom. Even then it's going to be a tight fit hiding the gearbox inside the boom.

I've figured out a way that with minor modifications to the transmitter, I can use 2 channels to control the speed and direction on up to 5 motors, but only one motor at a time. I plan on using 2 of these set-ups on my Manitou, which will give me the equivalent of 10 channels of control from 4 radio channels. I doubt that I'll ever be coordinated enough to try controlling multiple movements at one time. I don't see not being able to do simultaneous coordinated slew, boom, and cable movements as a problem.

Hey Bill what if you used some firgelli actuators in each section of the boom? not sure how your funding is but......

No Hydraulics, just electricc power. Yes, stuck on how to build telescopic boom.
Thanks for reply

Problem is I need to move four sections out and in

watsonbill 09-11-2020 05:26 AM

Re: Help Crane builders

Dont see how that would work as each section slides inside the next one

That's an interesting one. Since you said no to the Actuonics option, maybe one of these?

Gear tracks mounted to booms, with gearmotors running the pinion gear. Possibly either individual escs, or 1 esc with many micro switches to sequence sections and limit travel

Jackscrew and acme nuts mounted to booms, coupled to gearmotors, controlled as above.

Continious-rotation Servo set up as winch drum, pulling line through complicated system of pulleys to extend. Springs or second cable bed on winch drum to retract sections? Possibly sequencing the sections by different retract spring rates on each section?

. Something like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yInMEfrQWwA
. Or. http://sariel.pl/2008/12/mobile-at-crane-6x4x2/

Post up a build thread!

Re: Help Crane builders

As far as I remember, older 1030 cranes had a cylinder moving the first telescoping element and a cable/pulleys set up that "synchronised" elements 3 and 4...drop me a PM and I can send you a pdf brochure showing in detail how it works.
Of course, the cylinder can easily be replaced by a gear motor/screw combo ;)
