1/16 'ish metal tracks for crane?
I bought a second Doepke crane that I would like to make a cable hoe out of it but, I haven't been able to find nice tracks for it?

These are kinda close. Does anybody know the width of these?

Scott there are a lot of tracks on Ebay. Send them an email and they will tell you how wide they are. Ed

Re: 1/16 'ish metal tracks for crane?
I would guess the tracks on that Unit are around 20" wide, so ideally you want them around 1 1/4". I hope to see it come together. I'd like to build a tracked crane but I haven't got the tracks completely figured out. I think I have a way to make them one by one on my mill but I'm not looking forward to it if I do.

Out of my memory I would say about ¾” . I have these 1/16 scale T-34 tanks at home . I gone ask some of my tanker-buddies to measure them. There are no real metal sprockets for these type tracks , but some of our tanker-guys have made up there own . This is what this T-34 model looks like : http://customrcmodels.com/Tanks/id94.htm |
Re: 1/16 'ish metal tracks for crane?
This is going to be cool!!!

Re: 1/16 'ish metal tracks for crane?
Scott I just measured the tracks on the dozer and they are 1 3/4 inches wide. Ed

Re: 1/16 'ish metal tracks for crane?
Here is an economical alternative but not nearly as cool.

If I can come up with drive wheels for the t-34 tracks I'll probably go with those. |
Re: 1/16 'ish metal tracks for crane?
I agree the metal are much better, the plastics might be good for experimenting.

Re: 1/16 'ish metal tracks for crane?
Well, I got the drive sprockets & roller chain ordered today.
Two 9t sprockets, two 12 tooth sprockets, 10 feet of #25 roller chain and some master links for only $35 shipped! at surpluscenter.com :) Tomorrow I'll continue my search for tracks. I'll make a new "cable Hoe" thread when I get the doepke crane. |
Re: 1/16 'ish metal tracks for crane?

That is what a cable hoe is to me. Or do you mean a clamshell like this? http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/m.../PH07677_L.jpg |

Wow, sounds like you in for a challenge!

Re: 1/16 'ish metal tracks for crane?
Right again!:D
The track/drive base needs to be very heavy and the boom, stick & bucket needs to be reasonably light because you can only add so much counter weight...it'll be a slow build but, a fun one.:) |
