Fury Fan's foibles and follies - homebrewed and crude!
 

Now that I've figured out what photo-site I want to use, it's time to stop lurking and post some pictures. These will cross some category lines, but I'm mostly a semi-truck guy, so I'll be putting it here - at least the miscellaneous stuff I've built in the past few years. Future stuff will get more-dedicated build threads?

So it all started with a Tamiya Hornet, and then a Frog, back in the mid-80s. A few years ago I stumbled across a re-issue Frog on Amazon, had been built by a guy during recovery from a leg operation. Got it for around kit price, but had extra tires and some other goodies (now that I'm older, time is precious, so a built kit was a big savings).

Having just a Frog wasn't sufficient, so I devised a crude little trailer for the kiddos to carry Lincoln Logs with. the wheels were used from my parts stash from my orig RC cars from almost 30 years ago. (!) No suspension (not called for), crude axle and bushings, and spent a little more effort maiking a tongue for it. A drop-in tailgate rounds it off.

I was kinda pleased to find a PVC pipe fitting that was near-perfect for fenders for this size tire - I cut it in half, cut it down, then rounded the 2 bottom corners. Now I can't remember where I bought it, and haven't been able to find it on Google either. I want to get a few more. The little flange-lip is probably pretty good clue for what it is - if anyone can ID it, I'll be grateful!

looks like plumbing fitting maybe for a connecter of diff matterials possibly

It almost looks like a compression type fitting for a sinks grease trap.

I don't shop at HD too much, pretty sure not from there, likely would be Menards or Mcmaster, but can't see it on their shelves/in my order history.

I've typed the barcode #s and the molded-in #s off it in several search engines and zero luck. I once netsearched a 1959 Chrysler EFI intake manifold and had better luck finding info than I did with this PVC thing!

I do think it looks like a flanged/adapter-type component. I'll try looking near garbage disposals next time I hit the store.

Or maybe a floor flange for a toilet?

Handles weight just fine, but the trailer bounces around a bit.

Next up is a DBGM blow-molded toy. Back in childhood I had 'the big green car' made by DBGM in West Germany.

Forgot all about it, until I happened to see one in a neighbor's basement (20 years later!) After some ebaying, I collected quite a set of their trucks - a Shell oil truck, a cement mixer, a trash truck, and a dumptruck. A collection probably worth about 25 bucks. Got tired of looking at them, so got rid of all but the car and this truck at a garage sale.

Nothing fancy to it, and I had nothing fancy planned, so I got out the snippers and dremel and started hacking. As any of you have done this can attest, it's NOT that simple to get from A to B!!!


Chassis is a piece of hardboard, some cheap brackets and bushings, cheap belt drive setup.

Wheels are Frog up front (on an ebay 1/14 steer axle) and Brat in back on a 3/16 rod with threaded ends. All the proportions turned out pretty good for the wheel dia and tread width on the front axle. While I will not claim it is pretty, it turned out looking 'right'.

Another few things and then I'll be into my road-truck stuff. Most of these things were just CNC practice toward RC stuff.

I'd been making some 6-slot Lincoln logs and they needed a trailer. All these trailers were simple to make with some #10 allthread, 3/16"bushings, and some simple brackets to hold the axles.

Then I got this broken horse trailer (it's large-scale!) that needed a new tongue.

Then I started on a flatbed trailer. Nothing fancy - wooden rails, wooden bed, with aluminum bits added on. No suspension - just made an alum plate to hold a pair of ebay axles/wheels/tires.

I discovered I had to hack into the front of the rails for clearance at the tractor, which killed it for me. It was a sacrificial experiment from day 1anyway, so I harvested parts and moved onto the next one with ideas to make it better.

Unfortunately I didn't photo it when it was complete.

The next version is longer, has more realistic framerails, smaller screwheads, leafspring suspension, and mudflaps. I have a few half-baked ideas for landing legs but nothing I'm satisfied with yet. Need to get more pics of it to post.

I tried postimage.org to see how it would work, and it's exactly what I wanted - free - and I didn't see any references to 'packages' or payment plans or anything.

IIRC I selected '17-inch monitor' size when uploading, and then it sizes based on that wherever you paste the link. The links are not intuitive, though, I didn't find one that was a 1-step link-paste into here, had to copy one and then put it inside the 'img /img' stuff. A mild hassle, but not the end of the world.
