lockable axles
I found a company that has lockable stock semi axles.
https://shop.der-getriebedoktor.de/a...6.html#content Anybody have any clue how they could have accomplished this? My next big project I want to build is a king hauler dump truck that I want to make 6x6 and having lockable axles would be a cool feature. Thanks |
Re: lockable axles
My guess is they put a locker in the diff.

Re: lockable axles
They work well, but it puts a lot of strain on the light metal Tamiya spider cross within the differential. Gotta shop around for a steel cross upgrade or maybe the Gear Doctor offers them that way now.
I had a 6wd Globe pulling 70lbs gvw up 12 degree incline, crosses did not last long... that was a decade ago, I vaguely remember some one offering steel crosses, but I can't remember who. After that trial & error episode, I then just manually locked the rearmost axle dropping a spider gear between the other two and put shoo goo in the other two differentials. |
Re: lockable axles
The cable that runs out of the diff hooks to a servo so you can lock and unlock the diff as needed.
If you're asking about inner workings, check out Axial wraith and Traxxas summit / trx4 since they have that feature. Most locked axles just run a spool. These selectable ones generally use a spring loaded collar that moves locking pins across the spider carrier into holes in the other side. |
Re: lockable axles
I'm dirt cheap, so I use the fore mentioned method of spider gears to lock em up.

Re: lockable axles
Yea more curious on what the internal diff they used could be. Rc4wd looks like they discontinued their lockable diffs. I just wish scale trucking/construction was more popular in North America to get more cool custom stuff here. Not worth the small fortune to get something from oversees for the novelty factor so it will probably be the freebie locking method for me. Lol

Re: lockable axles
The only feasible novelty thing I may be able to pull off could be using some kind of crawler dig unit to switch from 6x4 to 6x6.

Monster Mudder, integy.com has a selection of locking axles under the "Options for Tamiya 1/14 Scale (Tractor) Semi Trailer Trucks" tab. check them out |
Re: lockable axles
I'm going over to this Lesu Axles from Rigide RC. Best i've tested so far. http://www.rigidrc.com/shop/125-driv...ferential-lock

Re: lockable axles
Here are two examples of how a Tamiya diff can be remotely locked. Both seem to involve a sliding ring around one of the axles locking the axle/shaft to the diff casing.
