Locking differentials
 

I am contemplating installing a locking diff on my truck. The idea is to get it hooked up to an extra servo and lock it briefly only when road condition require it.

It appears there used to be a few 3-rd party brands that made them, but now there's only one from Lesu.

Has anyone actually used it? Did it work? Was it a direct fit in place of Tamiya, assuming I am keeping leaf springs and all the other stuff in place.

Looking for any and all feedback before I shell out hunderd bucks on it :confused:

I'm also very interested in experiences with this. Lesu has a new series with 2.66 gearing that is tempting.

Which ones are having this ratio? As far as I can see they all say 3:1.

Q-9008 (single front axle with flange) and Q-9005 series (4x4 and 6x6 combos with hex or flange) have 1/2.6 ratio. Unfortunately single front axle with hex isn't available, but they said they would forward my request to their design department over a year ago.

On Lesu site all these axles as single products say ratio is 3 to 1.
What do you mean single with hex is not available?
Not available for purchase on its own?

Hercules Hobby also makes locking front and rear differentials as well as a dual output transmission but I have no experience with them and am unsure of the gear ratio.

Q-9014, Q-9019 and Q-9020 are new generation front axles with 1/3.1 ratio.

On page 11 here: http://www.rclesu.com/SK.html :

Q-9008 is new generation front axle with 1/2.6 ratio (and flange mount for the wheel).

The 1/2.6 axle is not sold separately in hex version, only flange version.

Q-9005-A 4x4 and 6x6 kits includes 1/2.6 axle with hex.

Q-9005-B 4x4 and 6x6 kits includes 1/2.6 axle with flange.

It's not as trick as running working Lockers, but Silly Putty and Silicone Shock Oil let you make a limited-slip goo to put in your spider gears. Works on 1/10 crawlers.

Shoegoo / e6000 glues work well in the spider gears also. It starts nearly spool, then opens into a limited slip after a while

With enough runtime either of those will start to open up more, but i'm pretty sure LittleGiants said he'd gotten years of service on his basement haul trucks before needing fresh.

Plus you can keep from using up more channels, not having to remember which way is open or spool.

Yeah frizzen I've used Shoe Goo in the diffs, usually the front diff of a TLT, then left the middle axle open & manually locked the rear axle dropping a spider gear between the other two within diff for 5wd. I've also used the Gear Doctor lockers that Bo linked too, but they're hard on stock Tamiya spider crosses... somebody makes a steel spider cross, might be rcbrim?

I think I have a 6x6 set of locker axles that I got from RC4WD yrs ago, they're the same axles in the Eagle Mach wheel loader, RCBRIM makes them? I never used them, still in box, you're welcome to them condor for $cdn, pm if you're interested... as I see you're from Ontario, shipping will be cheap.

I've pretty well retired all my Tamiya trks, too small, too weak... FUMOTEC POWER WAHOO!!! :cool:

Tamiya has them on the Ford F 350 High Lift.https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tamiya-5652...k/112008265797 Check out the cross has a BLACK center and steel pins. Not to use the grey garbage one, just wonder why they still make that?

I can also say, Hercules Hobby is the night shift of Tamiya sort of. Day shift closes the night shift change materials to cheaper and weaker stuff and put it in less expensive boxes, that's why they can cut price. :eek:

Thanx for the link Bo, bought the last two available sets to rebuild old axles. ;) :cool:

I think I still need probably six more sets to rebuild all the axles I've blown out over the yrs. Doing shyt like this was purely for demonstration purposes :D

Happy to contribute, Joe. I've got a family pack long ago and they are good and last really long. I also shim all gears as close as possible to make them last much longer. some of the casted gears are rough, so I even run them to my special "dentist mill" to cut away the bottom/radius between the tooth.

This just proves the point that 99,9% will not come close to wear out a stock axle ;)
