Chroming parts?
 

Has anyone here tried or had luck with chroming parts yourself? I found a mini chroming Kit by micro mark, but before I buy it has anyone had luck with it? It looks pretty cool and not too expensive. They sell the kits for nickel,brass and chrome for plastic and metals. Figured I'd see here first.

well for starters I haven't chromed my own stuff but had metal in High School chromed for me. Everything needs at least 1000 grit sanding or scratches will show, if I remember correctly I sanded up to 1500, and everything was bare. No primer or the finish was recked.

I was wrong about it plating plastic, but it plates copper and some other metals. Ill have to keep that sanding thing in mind if i decide to try it. It sound super simple in the directions it gives on the site. I havnt tried pricing what a shop would charge to plate a few things but im sure its not too bad. But if you had the means to do it yourself at home would you want to do it yourself? I would. Idk maybe ill try it as it could be quite usefull for future builds i have planned where there are lots of little parts that will need to be chromed. But my only concern is the durablity of the DIY kit.. how does it stand up compaired to full dipped parts? heres the link you can check it out yourself.

Hi,

There is a chrome spray paint which you could use to coat plastic, but I've never used it myself and I think the paint is quite pricey! But it maybe an option if you need plastic parts chromed :o

Here is a company that does plastic chroming for models and automotive. I have not used them but have a friend that has. Was very happy with the results. You'll have to check on current pricing and the requirements for prep work.

Chrometech is probably your best bet, you can also get copper electrically conductive spray paint which will enable you to plate plastic parts with the brush plating kit (which works surprisingly good) either option is costly though.

When I worked at the Harley Dealership we used Meclec Metal Finishing. There out of california. Not sure if they do plastic, but they did amazing work and fast turnaround. I believe they also do anodizing.

That looks pretty cool Aaron. Be sure and let us know how it works if you decide to get it. A lot of possibilities if you could do it yourself where as the cost of having it done might not be worth it for just a few small parts.

ANy progress on this? was thinking of just going ahead and ordering the kit myself, if its worth it

It does however the"Kit" costs $2k I've ordered an alternative similar and way less money. So I'll post the testing when it all arrives.I have found about 8 products that claim these same results so I'll try one at a time from cheapest up till I find one that works.

Yea 2k BUT thats for the full set up to have a "shop" i guess you could say. has all the equip, sprayers, etc.... Just still not worth it in my book. Here check out their site. The $2500 is the cheapest kit. Great product though. If i had a shop that i would have the use for it it would be worth it but i just build stuff for fun in my basement HAHA

I build motorcycles as well. Am very interested in this spay system. Would any of you send work my way pending how it goes I I get system for bike work?

If the prices were reasonable i would. The system looks top notch and does killer work but its just way too much system for what little i would need done.... For you you could profit off it with a shop doing parts for people here and in the bike world, 4wheelers, snowmobiles etc.....

I used a chrome spray paint on a steel front bumper for a Tamiya high lift.
It doesn't do a good finish for me. It remains soft for quite some time. My fingerprints are on the bumper from me touching 24 hrs after. It also rubs off.

I'll keep using it to touch up scratches and stuff, but if I were to do again, I'd paint the bumper black. :cool:

With that being said, one person posted and it seem to work OK for them. I may have put on to thick a coat.
