paint issue
 

im hoping one of you paint gurus can explain this:

3 coats yesterday and 2 today, still looks like the primer is sucking in the paint. ive used almost a whole 8oz can on 4 of these fenders, im worried more coats will make the paint so thick it will crack, or flake off after a few months. i painted the lid of the can and it came out nice and shiny, so im at a loss here.

whats weird is the 3rd coat last night was fine, except the outer edges dryed like this, and now the 2 coats today have gone back to this flat look.

used dupli color hi build primer and dupli color exact match paint, tried another primer same result, so i tried painting a new fender with no primer, same result.

im thinking the plastic they're made from is reacting to that color paint, i painted frame crossmembers, rear axles, tank mounts ect with the same brand but a different color, worked fine. :mad:

so now i have 7 coats of paint to strip, i guess the fenders will go the same color as the frame. :(

anyone ever paint these before? they're the tamiya trailer fenders from the reefer i believe.

was it cold or hot when you painted? ive painted a few parts
in the garage during the winter and had results that looked the same

room temperature, in my basement. my paint booth is a shop vac cardboard box set in the corner lol.

decided i had nothing to lose, tried clear coating them as they were. seems the clear doesnt react to the plastic like the paint does, so im saved! :D

ill know better next time to test before i dive in head first!

I am guessing it is not the primer. Have you put clear on it yet or is this just the paint.

I thought I had a serious problem and called a friend of mine at the shop where I buy automotive paint. I told him I tried to go the easy route and explained what the paint was doing and he said have no fear just put the clear on and it would be fine. So I took a chance and cleared the cab and it turned out fine.

yup travis, thats what i did too. i was losing my mind, because it didnt say anything about being a base clear paint, just that you could clear it.

Those guys are correct....sometimes the paint dose wiered things because of the temp...or the humidity in your house. i would let the paint dry a couple days...and then put a light clearcoat on it....when that dries in about 2 hours or so...add more clear...you should be fine ! good luck ! and let us know how it goes....

i use clear coat on every paint i apply, so when i saw this i did a little reading. ok, so i looked up "dupli color exact match paint" for poops and giggles. well on their how to apply page, they state you need colour match paint, which is base coat, and clear coat, plus the usual sand paper. my truck (pumpkin) is in dupli-colour ready to spay, then on go the graffics, and finally clear coat. great product. easy to use and clean. just got to have everything at the rite settings on gun and temp in shop.

Good day to all, I have 5 trucks that i have build between last year May and January of this year. i have not have any look with any of the 3 painter that i sent my cabs to, to paint. The back wall of 2 of my cabs are Styrene as I converted them to day cabs. So, I about to take a shot at paint my own Cabs and had a questions. I saw in one post it was mentioned the use of Duplicolor High Primer, so I went on there website and I found it, but it says for use on metals, wood, and fiberglass. It has not mention anything about using on plastic. I am just wondering if this is the same product. I greatly appreciate any help that you guys can have me. Thank you in advance.

just a quick question do you guys wet sand before you clear coat ?

I'm no professional but I wet sand after every layer of paint I put on. Doing so helps the next coat dry on a smooth surface. It's not a fast process but worth it in the end.

I do the same! This method is well worth the effort!
