Logging Trailer
I have been really bummed out with the fab shop stuff - and because of that I really had not been doing anything of my own. Didn't really have any drive or desire.
But - when I was cleaning up the debris and dusting off my work bench ..... I had a thought hit me - I had some left over drop deck frame rails from some time ago..... and I had been wanting a logging trailer for some time. Add in Freddy's inspirational work and here goes ..... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psa52d4ef7.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps6cab2e6a.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps0cc78d57.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psf66e0a3d.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psdfd5e898.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps64c26afb.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psb90290df.jpg .... more to come .... |
Re: Logging Trailer
Awesome Izzy! Those frame rails look really nice, and I like the tri-axle set-up, with air ride. Keep it going!

Re: Logging Trailer
Great looking build Izzy :D You trailers are simply amazing  :)
If you need any photos of logging trailers, just ask. I'm certain that I could get a group of the guys/gals from the West Coast Log Truckers to send some over for you. Just let me know what angle/view you need and I'd see if I can get 'em for you. :D https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n..._5336086_n.jpg For something different: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=dYhMWd1bwfA I'm interested in your build, so many options  - RCT |
Re: Logging Trailer

|
Re: Logging Trailer

Re: Logging Trailer

Re: Logging Trailer
Thanks everyone - the inspiration on this build is a local guy who runs a tri with slightly smaller tires - it has a bit of a sloped end so he loads a small loader up on the rear. I guess he specializes in small batch pick ups.
Unfortunately I never see the truck in a lot parked - always on the run- so no pics As Paul hinted - yes the frame rails were a special order some time ago. Unfortunately these are 1/8 thick. Q- how many have figured out that the width outside to outside of your trailer frame rails is larger than your tractors? I can get by with the thicker rails since I'm using Russ' air ride suspensions. Izzy |

Re: Logging Trailer
On a stock frame width like my other trailers I typically add the supplied washers between the drag link and the uprights in his suspension. 3 - 3mm flat washers per side.
On this one - with tractor frame spreaders and the thicker rails no washers are needed. I am not positive about his new suspension as I have not installed one yet. Izzy |
Re: Logging Trailer
It should be the same spacing

Re: Logging Trailer
Here's a bit more - don't laugh too hard at my binders though ...... :) I have more pics but haven't loaded them all into photobucket yet .... but here is what I have
BTW - the one side is the pivot bracket from under a suspension and the other is from above the suspension. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps56a9554b.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psc26d8061.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps87197966.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psd222d09a.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps6170c363.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps1b9ea016.jpg |

Re: Logging Trailer
And now for todays updates ...... the supports between the upright posts are not anchored just yet. It looked too naked without them.
Should I have upright posts on every support? I ran out of narrow channel from Menards - just picked it up. Each support is a 1/2" wide channel and a 3/8" wide channel together. I measured the bunk supports today - 9-1/8" overall - translates to 11' overall - I guess I'm building an off hiway trailer rather than a on-road style...... http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps5527eea6.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps4027d5b6.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps06fc61cf.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...psaad78599.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...pscaf95b1f.jpg http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps17a34c97.jpg |
Re: Logging Trailer
Nice progress Izzy, I like it!

Re: Logging Trailer
The binders look great, Izzy. I wouldn't worry much about the scale factor. The cool factor will make up for it. Working binders is something you don't see much of. Making the ratchet mechanism out of a motor pinion gear is genius!

Re: Logging Trailer
Very cool Izzy.Trailer looks awsome and looks like it can hald a jag of wood .Like those rachets ..how a set of these for your trailer ..lol.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdLGbGh9ASM

Re: Logging Trailer
Thanks Nate - I like them too - now to find a suitable cable or strap.
Lou - Now that's serious ingenuity - I wonder if they keep them "live" throughout the trip - just in case the load shifts and settles. You Aussie guys got it goin on! Way cool |
Re: Logging Trailer
The trailer looks like the ones they run up in Maine off-highway. keep it up!!
