Capo 1582-2 Tatra T815-7 8x8 and Cross MC8 Man Kat 1 8x8
This will be an ongoing journal of these 2 models I bought recently. I will try and keep things current as I have some rather ambitious plans for both. For starters, size comparison between the capo and cross 8x8's. And a shot of the scale motor build of the capo.

Re: Capo 1582-2 Tatra T815-7 8x8 and Cross MC8 Man Kat 1 8x8
Tore into the drive train a little bit and boy im glad i did. Not only was nothing greased, but most of the screws i have taken out were loose. And a couple were backed out completely
Started swapping out socket head screws for scale hardware http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...976e63ab15.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...a13b4a9306.jpg An interior is in the future for sure http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...ce9147b4bf.jpg Heres something a little unnerving. The only thing holding the cab onto the chassis is 4- m2x5 screws. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...21cfecefb0.jpg Lots of room in the back of the cab for electronics http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...a6821217fd.jpg Another area of concern. The cab mounts to the front bumper/skid. The bumper/skid mounts to the chassis with yup... 4 m2x5 screws. They seem to have some play in them. I will be putting longer screws in at the bare minimum. Hopefully they wont need to be drilled and tapped with a bigger size down the road http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...79e61cfc28.jpg The entire bed is only held on with 4 m3 screws as well. Not much i can do here as the hole aren't tapped very deep. i just hope they hold up. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...b91ec59d68.jpg With the bed off http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...c34c2869d7.jpg Another thing im not fond of, under compression and full lock the front wheels are going to be rubbing the shocks pretty bad. Uncompressed http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...30e0eda456.jpg Compressed http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...0839275b6e.jpg More to follow soon. |

Underside
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...6a979c5d1d.jpg Remove 8 screws, the shocks, and the 4 diff lock arms to separate the driveline from chassis http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...04284b590f.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...48ae6fdf87.jpg M2.5 hex head to remove the hub covers http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...da05b82996.jpg This allows access to the standard m4 size nut that holds the wheel on I also noticed that on the rear wheels the nut bottoms out on the shaft before the rim. Leaving the wheel a little loose. I will have to shim it. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...22331334be.jpg Back side of a wheel. What a nightmare it would be if you had to remove 10 m2 nuts to get each wheel off! http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...673fc53e5f.jpg |
Re: Capo 1582-2 Tatra T815-7 8x8 and Cross MC8 Man Kat 1 8x8
One of the front wheels was really wobbly. Found out why the screws were loose and one backed out all together
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...56f9ed7fbb.jpg No grease anywhere http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...d6033a23fc.jpg |
Re: Capo 1582-2 Tatra T815-7 8x8 and Cross MC8 Man Kat 1 8x8
Diff unlocked
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...05db904656.jpg Diff locked. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...6affd9275b.jpg This diff scares me. For how heavy this truck is theres such a tiny bit of mesh where these planetary gears touch... I cant see this being very strong This was fun to put back together. I had to grease the shift fork, but not so much that grease squeezed into the hole that needed to be thread locked. Then i had to hold the parts inside the tube lined up to the hole and try to thread the link mount into the fork, while being careful not to loose the bushing ... http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...b4f77ca62e.jpg A break down of a front half axle http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...412ef06ecb.jpg And one reassembled, thread locked and scalified http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...497de177b5.jpg I managed to tear a boot, thankfully there were extras included http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...8a54df9d72.jpg One axle greased and ready to go, now only 3 more to go..... http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...4bf9acee57.jpg Reassembled and scale hardware added... There are so many screws on this thing its crazy... I love it! Lol http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...39e8de0a7c.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...96845d6841.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...3803223d97.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...41590691ea.jpg |
Re: Capo 1582-2 Tatra T815-7 8x8 and Cross MC8 Man Kat 1 8x8
so theres 4-m3 tapped holes in the bottom of each axle case. Im not sure why they are there, other then maybe for adjusting the the ride height lower, or maybe skid plates...
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...0187dc1b1a.jpg I filled them with some screws to keep dirt out http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...d8060d803c.jpg I changed over to tamiya ceramic grease. I was worried about the sticky black grease not getting to the areas where the planetary's shafts etc. spin and not being lubed. The tamiya grease is alot lighter and flows a bit into all areas from what ive seen. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...6db7c2d209.jpg Another area where theres a big issue is in the front steering geometry. Everything works dandy with the steering until you add compression on the front axle. At which point the steering arms hit on the top of the axle. I played around with some offset rod ends I had laying around, and it seems they will suffice to remedy the problem. All i had was short ones, I have some longer ones ordered ill replace them when they come in. Too bad they're plastic.... I cant find any metal ones. This is the steering angle at full lock. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...e886ad802f.jpg This is as far as it turns before it binds under full compression http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...54d5c7f22d.jpg Cracked open the 2 speed transfer case http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...dcbb4dfe47.jpg Gave it a good dose of grease http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...2486e2792a.jpg When i cracked open the 3rd axle housing. I noticed one of the bearings had fallen out of it seat. Theres nothing to hold it in place. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...f6d4a3c6b2.jpg Looking closely at it, the bearing is actually 2 bearings pressed together to make one. Kind of odd. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...056e49da30.jpg I shimmed it with some washers to keep it seated. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...d782354977.jpg This is where it sits at now. Its proving to take quite alot of time to swap out the many many screws. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...5ffe902e76.jpg |
Re: Capo 1582-2 Tatra T815-7 8x8 and Cross MC8 Man Kat 1 8x8
Started swapping out the fender bolts, i may or may not keep the washers. Im undecided so far.
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...11736b62fc.jpg Im having a hard time deciding on paint color... Leaning towards nato green... Im definitely open to suggestions... http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...42a7ed735a.jpg The rear axles halves are pretty much identical for all 4. There are m3 holes on the sides that don't have the coil overs. I figured id fill them with some grub screws to keep the dirt out. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...21317b5f56.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...7d73797f1b.jpg Fuel tank removed. I want to fab up some sort of skid plate for it so i dont end up tearing it off. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...ae4d7b6d5f.jpg Changed the m2 screws that hold the front bumper on. I put longer ones in as this is a critical area as it holds the entire cab on! http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...5973900db0.jpg Mounted up with new screws http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...25a2809aa1.jpg |
Re: Capo 1582-2 Tatra T815-7 8x8 and Cross MC8 Man Kat 1 8x8
2-m2.5 screws fastening each cab hinge to the bumper. With only about 3 to 4 mm of thread actually holding the hinges on, i was concerned about them being strong enough. So i tapped them all the way through and used longer scale hardware.
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...441e96e642.jpg This is what it looked like from the front prior to tapping http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...c18d52b634.jpg New screws bolting on the hinges http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...4526a0a76e.jpg From the front http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...6d4174b939.jpg After scale hardware added to the grill http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...8f039065d7.jpg Started mocking up a fix for the front wheel scrub issue with the coil over http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...d3aa797bbc.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...638aaa8ac2.jpg Offset link ends added. This stops them from hitting the axle under compression, i just wish i could find some metal ones. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...d7ed2bf537.jpg Full lock and compression, and no binding! Tomorrow I'll replace the styrene with aluminum and make them look presentable. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...6702c3be9c.jpg |

WOW! Great machine, but a lot of tinkering to get it perfect. Where can I get those scale screws? I kind of stepped aside from my 6x6 build but will get back at it now.

Re: Capo 1582-2 Tatra T815-7 8x8 and Cross MC8 Man Kat 1 8x8
Yes even the most expensive models require a bit of finesse to get right. It's not needed for most that purchase these higher end models but it's nice to see someone going through and making it right. I have always thought of these models as high end and it's just fitting to finish them off proper :). Nice to see you keeping the intended precision work matched to the quality of model. Keep the post coming. I've always wanted one of these but I can't justify the price for my use, at least not yet :) so it's nice to see your posts. When she is complete and proper you got to put her in the ruff and video!!

Re: Capo 1582-2 Tatra T815-7 8x8 and Cross MC8 Man Kat 1 8x8
Well after testing a few different paint colors I had laying around, Ive decided to try and match the darker green of Capo's anodizing. Ive ordered some darker greens in hopes of getting a closer match. Im thinking black green might be the ticket. In the pic is nato green on the left, olive green on right, and the factory anodizing color on the bottom.

Finished my modifications to the #1 axle shock relocation. 1/8" aluminum plate mounted to axle halves.

Re: Capo 1582-2 Tatra T815-7 8x8 and Cross MC8 Man Kat 1 8x8
Looks great. Definitely a shame you had to do all this work. If they leave the drive line parts that unfinished I wonder why they even take the time to provide them assembled. The scale hardware really looks awesome as well

Re: Capo 1582-2 Tatra T815-7 8x8 and Cross MC8 Man Kat 1 8x8
Great thread on the 'rebuild' Glad that I didn't splurge and buy the Capo. The Cross-RC is enough of a challenge to keep running. I have broken 2 steering knuckles already with no real off-roading. 1 broke during assembly and the other broke at Indy during its maiden run. I had ordered more steering knuckles after reading a few build reports on the 8X8. Just glad that I had an unassembled 6X6 handy to get parts from. Noticed that they changed the type of plastic for the axles in the 6X6. Feels more like an engineered plastic rather than ABS in the 8X8.
Will keep watch to see what you say about the Cross-RC 8X8. |
