The road is a sheet of icy packed snow, and no chains on either loader or tow truck.

Joe, you can mod the steer axle by shaving off part of the knuckles to get a tighter turn radius. Posts I've seen on this were on the old (now dead) Garden forum.

You can always paint components not the color you want ...
But working with the Flatbed will be better, you can use the frame rails cut down for the rear part of the B chassis.

DupliColor sells in auto parts stores a self-etching primer that sticks pretty good to aluminum - just make sure to prep it good.

What kind of truck? Body type?
PMD makes a very nice pintle type hitch, for a truck to tow a trailer.

Trailer could be pup type, which has weight on the pintle hitch.
Or it could be a pull type...
