Got any Tonka construction toys kicking around? ...just add gear motors & screw drives to make em work. Google ServoCity, RobotShop, Firgelli. Nothing for quality rc dirt workers under a thousand $ without a lot of self modification... you could teach your son how to design & program cnc.
