RCMAN's Globeliner 1st custom stretch!

I bought this Globeliner around 1996. So time for a upgrade and I decided to stretch it! This is my first custom truck so.... I will have lots of questions lol! Here are some teaser pix of when I first built it and the complete dis-assembly.

Ok I think I can handle drilling and tapping the holes. My 1st ? is how do I do the slots? or should I measure where the servo will go and drill 1 hole and if I'm a little off I can enlarge it then. 2nd, I'm wondering if I clamp the channels together, flat side to flat side will that give me a mirror image of the rail? in other words the right will make the left and visa versa.

3rd ? What is a good length for the rails? I have some rails I bought from Tamiya Cowboy a few years back and I am just getting around to using them lol. They are 77mm long. I am going to start with just stretching it and as money is available I want it to be tri-axle with the first one a lift axle. any suggestions?

for the slots, If you have no mill , you drill 3 holes . the 2 on the end and 1 in the middle . with a needle file and some time clean out .

Thanks I think I can handle that. I have a mini file set. I do have a small harbor freight drill press so drilling is no problem.

I clamp the rails together when I drill new ones. Yes, a left will make a right and right will make a left. Just double check before you drill. Hope this helps

Thanks I thought that would work. I plan to clamp them together to mark them and then drill it. still not sure how long to make the frames. any suggestions.

One sugestion, is to get a little vise, clamp that on the drill press. Maybe take a piece of frame rail, either a small scrap, or the end of one, and test a couple holes, to get it right where you want it to be, up and down the rail, Then make sure you don't move the vise while your drilling, this will make sure every hole is in the correct position. What I did, I knew how long I was gonna make mine, then added a couple inches. Drilled a hole, and put a short 1/4 bolt in it, with a nut on the back, so the rails would stay nice and tight.. This will make sure they stay inline while you are drilling the holes... Then once you have all holes, and ready to assemble, you then cut off the 1/4 hole piece, and whalla...

Ignore the periods, the spaces go away, the flat bars, are kinda like how you need to put the frame back to back, so they are aligned...
One way to maybe help see how long you want them, is to take a flat bar, and drill out some of the holes, to make one side of the frame, and attach the leaf springs to that, and see your different wheelbases, or if you know you'll never use your other frame, you can put it back together, and cut it, then move it around till you like the length. But then your ruining any chance of redoing it, Or maybe just add a piece to the center, and you woun't have to drill many new holes.. Just take your time and be precise..

Just remembered that I use one old frame rail as a template for one new rail and then when that new rail is finished, I use that new rail as a template for the other new rail so that I know they will be the exact same.

your globe stretch was tooooo long.
I was able to put two axles on those rails

Peter that is what I was planning to do. I was going to take a pencil or pic and mark all the holes from one rail to the other and then center punch and drill and tap them all out.

bigford what do you mean to long? you think 77cm is to long? how long do you think would be good? seen lots of stretches but didnt seem to find any lengths of them. king hauler rails are 57cm long.

Many have swapped out King Hauler rails for the one's in a globe but a little longer looks good to.

I fixed it and edited my question out of mine as well.

I say go for the 77cm and mock it up to see how you like it. Just drill the front holes and the cab mount holes then assemble the rear suspension to the crossmember and slide the rails in. You just wont be able to put in the two top screws and the long main screw through the center but it will hold together good enough to get an idea of what it will look like. Remember it is easier to make the frame shorter if you want but it is going to cost some time and money to make it longer if your not happy.

I agree bolt down the front end them mock up the rear and find the sweet spot you want it. to me anything with a 26-30" frame is perfect but i like the long trucks. Mine is around 25" and will be getting another set of rails soon to stretch it out longer.. Oh well lol

Thanks for all the replies! I have a set of king hauler rails I just bought. That would be to easy. lol so I have decided to go with the 77cm rails I bought from tamiya cowboy a few years back. I will post pics as I go. since I couldn't find a thread on how to mark and drill frame rails I will post pics of mine. stay tuned folkes.
