Default Rookie Custom Globe Build

Hi Guys

I have seen a lot of great trucks on this site which has inspired me to build my own Custom truck. It will be a mild custom due to my rookie custom building ability and I will probably need a lot of help along the way.

I have been in this hobby for 20 plus years and today I mostly collect and build kits having accumulated over 220 models of mostly cars, boats and helicopters of various scales.

I have built stock Tamiya trucks in the past but never attempted building a truck using the many aftermarket parts available today.

hopefully this picture shows up in the thread. This is a test...lol

Custom rails ordered and arrived. At the time I didn't see the listing for globe rails so I ordered king rails with a 4" extension from Joe's. Of course I didn't take into consideration that the king is a longer wheels base ( like I said ROOKIE!..lol ) So I have since ordered the correct rails and will change over but I will continue with these rails for now

I am not going to take a ton of pictures of the stock part builds because I think everyone has seen these a million times over and there is not much exciting about the stock parts being built. Below is the srvos and front cross members;

Rear suspension;

Rear suspension assembled;

I chose this aftermarket drive shaft. I think these shafts IMO are the most realistic. The main drive shaft will be the identical shaft only longer;

Rear wheels and fifth wheel added;

This is the rear light pattern I am using. I don't know if anyone has used this part before and if so have they ever attached lights? There are no bezels for this light cluster so I will need to figure something out;

Aluminum rear fenders mounted. This globe will be a little old school and a little new school....lol.

These are pre-drilled to mount to the stock Tamiya cross member and have some adjustability regarding the height of the fenders. The fenders look best as low as possible but you will get constant wheel rub so I have mounted mine using the center height mounting position. There are two sets of mounting spacers as shown below;

First look with the fenders and the cab. This is still using the king rails but that's about to change;

Front bumper. I do not like the stock front bumper or the front bumper distance from the front wheel. I have purchased two aftermarket bumpers. The first aftermarket bumper was not what I wanted so I ordered the second bumper. The second bumper is much better but I still felt the bumper mounted too far forward so I made my own mount to pull the bumper closer to the chassis;

A look with the bumper as it sits;

I have now ordered a 3rd bumper from Steve on this site ( great guy thanks for the help ) and I will see how that bumper looks with the stock mount when it arrives.

The truck now has the correct rails installed. Below is the first mock up of the middle section of the chassis. I will be using the knight hauler side step as kind of a tool box to mount my MFC control box. I will also be adding the aftermarket headache rack. The headache rack mounts to far away from the cab for my liking so I am currently working on modifying the mount to sit closer to the cab. I am also using the aftermarket grates to cover the open space;

Also seen in the photos are the aftermarket stacks which I will be using.

Nice truck, excellent choice of parts too.

If I might ask, where did you get the headache rack?

Lookin' sharp so far, you're taking your time.

I'd suggest getting some aftermarket fuel tanks on there. I think a guy at our last East Coast show had some custom long tanks up for sale.

Either way, A great build!

Thanks......

I don't think this truck will get aluminum tanks, I think the next truck will get aluminum tanks. I think the Tamiya plated tanks look more retro than the aluminum tanks.

I have got the headache rack mounted. The rack is made for a king so I had to create a recess to clear the tank mounts.

The body sits a little forward probably due to mu custom bumper mount. Therefore there is an uneven gap between the headache rack and the body. I will see if the 3rd bumper coming will correct this issue. I am happy with the spacing between the rack and the body.
